Everyone envies me. I have it all: money, power, a perfect body. For years I’ve spent my days chasing pleasure, but now I want something else.

I don’t know what that is until I end up in bed with Laurie, my little brother’s best friend. The one man I’ve been forbidden to touch.

He’s hurting. He needs me. We try to keep our hands off each other, but we’re alone in Aruba. The sun and the water beckon, and I can’t stay away.

Then danger threatens Laurie and my brother. No matter what I have to do, I won’t let them be taken from me. I will fight to keep everyone safe and to make Laurie mine.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

WORTH

Miles was calling, but I didn’t feel like talking to anyone. I’d spent all day ignoring calls and texts from my mother, my sister, and several members of the staff I was supposed to be supervising. I couldn’t do this anymore. I didn’t want to be stuck in an office building all day. I wanted freedom.

My mother thought I was a lazy piece of shit, but that wasn’t true. There were plenty of things I was willing to do, like running the art auctions she held several times a year. But since in her mind I was destined to be the CEO of Chamberlain Consolidated, it was that or nothing. So I’d learned to excel at doing nothing but drowning myself in pleasure.

If I had my way, I’d be on an island or in a mountain cabin right now, not stuck in the city with the heat rising off the asphalt, all my friends in happily-ever-after monogamous relationships, and my life seeming more useless than ever.

Reluctantly, I accepted the call; Miles was one of my best friends, after all.

Miles was speaking before I could even say hello. “We’ve got a situation here, and we need you.”

“What kind of situation?”

“Matteo spotted a member of the cartel in the city.”

Matteo was the former enemy and now boyfriend of our friend Carter. We’d all been involved in the takedown of a Colombian drug cartel, which may sound far-fetched, but Carter and Matteo are former SEALs, and Matteo is also former CIA. If there was trouble with the cartel, no wonder Miles sounded so tense.

I wasn’t sure what they needed me for, though. I had none of the skills Carter and Matteo had, and I didn’t work for Miles’s company like our other best friend Ford. Even Ford had skills Miles needed—primarily keeping Miles out of legal trouble. I was the fun friend, the one to go drinking with, the one who always knew the best new restaurants, the one who knew the best bars to find a hook up that would help you forget even the shittiest day. I wasn’t qualified to help them stop a dangerous enemy.

“I’ve got a meeting soon and—”

“Worth, we need you here.”

“Do you?” Was I really supposed to believe that?

“Yes.”

I sighed. I’d never turned down a request for help from any of my best friends, not since we’d bonded with each other at boarding school.

I wasn’t going to start now. “Fine. I’ll be there. How soon?”

“Five o’clock.”

I glanced at the ornate marble clock on my living room wall. I hated the damn thing, but my mother had insisted I keep it since it was my grandmother’s. I should have enough time to shower, dress, and have my driver drop me at Montgomery Enterprises. “See you then.”

“Good. Thank you.”

Like usual, Miles ended the call abruptly. I sat staring at my phone. He’d thanked me. Miles didn’t say please or thank you. He gave commands and expected everyone—even his friends—to obey. Rarely did anyone question him, except his boyfriend, Ben.

Something strange was going on. There’s no way he needed me urgently for some kind of war-room planning. That coupled with the “thank you” spelled trouble, but the only way to find out what was going on was to show up at this “emergency” meeting. I knew Miles wouldn’t tell me more before then, and I doubted any of our other friends would either.

I decided to wear my favorite lightweight blue suit. I might as well look good even if I’d rather be home in my silk pajamas feeling sorry for myself. I got several appreciative looks from both men and women as I entered Montgomery Enterprises headquarters. Despite knowing how damn fine I looked, my heart was pounding as I stepped into the elevator. Something was off, and I was about to find out what that was.

When the elevator opened into the executive suite, I headed to Miles’s office.

“They’re waiting for you,” his assistant said.

“Thank you.”

I took a breath as I opened the door, expecting to see Miles, Ford, Carter, and probably Matteo. What I didn’t expect was my brother. He was supposed to be in Chicago doing an internship at a law office. “Beck, what are you doing here?”

“Sit down.” Miles spoke before my brother could answer.

Heat rose into my face. “You lied to me.”

“We needed you here. That wasn’t a lie.”

“The rest of it was, and whatever you think this is—” I gestured around at everyone. “I’m not interested.”

“Worth,” Beck said. “Please stay. I’m here because I’m worried about you.”

“I’m fine.” I turned to go.

“Worth?” It was Carter this time. “You helped me when I was all messed up about Matteo. I want to help you now.”

“There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m just….”

“Really fucking unhappy,” Ford supplied.

I let out a long breath. “It hasn’t been the best few months, but I don’t need some kind of intervention.”

Carter is scarred physically and emotionally from his time as a Navy SEAL. The last thing he needs is for his nemesis to find him again and make Carter want to both kill him and kiss him.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

CARTER

one year ago

Icouldn’t believe I was actually doing this. I knew better, so much better.

If you get caught, it’s not like you can’t just go home and use all that money you refuse to spend.

I will never do that.

Then maybe you should turn your ass around and go back to headquarters.

I considered it. That would be the smart thing to do, but I was a hell of a lot more stubborn than I was smart—just ask any member of my family—and it had been way too long since I’d gotten pleasure from anything but my own hand.

When Matteo made it clear that, despite acting like he hated me most of the time, he would be more than happy to hook up, I ignored all his signals. My pretense of indifference did nothing to deter him. Since subtlety hadn’t worked, he came right out with a bold proposition to meet him at a motel tonight, one where there were no cameras and no one who gave a damn what we did or whether we left there alive.

He hadn’t left what he wanted up to my imagination. He’d made it very clear that he wanted to fuck me. I rarely bottomed, but the filthy words he’d used as he described his need to hold me down and take me mercilessly had made me rock hard.

I needed to know if the reality was as good as the fantasy. No way in hell was I going to turn around and go home, not even knowing the trouble we could both get in for fraternization.

You could easily find a willing man in a bar.

I didn’t want just anyone. I wanted Matteo. I had since the day he’d been assigned to my platoon.

I thought about how my best friends back home would react to my stupidity. Even if I could ask their advice, I likely wouldn’t. Besides, I already knew what they would say. Ford would tell me to walk away. Miles would say to enjoy every second of it because I had always been a rule follower unless it involved the safety of my friends. Worth would tell me to go for it. He’d say I deserved to enjoy myself, and if that meant giving my ass to the hottest guy I’d ever worked with, that’s what I should do.

I found the place Matteo told me to meet him. I hoped he was okay with fucking me standing up, because I had no intention of laying down on the beds in this place. I might have had to do some horrible shit since I’d joined the navy, but I wasn’t going to voluntarily open myself up to whatever germs and bugs were on those mattresses, not to mention the sweat of who knows how many people. I almost reconsidered meeting him. The oppressive Colombian heat had all of us permanently sweaty.

But I felt eyes on me as soon as I pulled my motorcycle to a stop at the curb. Matteo was there, standing in the shadows watching me. A shiver ran through me as I cut the engine and swung my leg over the seat. I said a prayer that my bike wouldn’t be stolen before we were done.

Matteo stepped away from the building and held up a key. When he headed across the dark parking lot, I followed him, barely able to make out the contours of his perfect ass.

My dick twitched at the idea of finally getting my hands on it. I needed to know if it felt as good as it looked.

Matteo unlocked the door, though I was sure either of us could easily have kicked it in. The lock wasn’t going to deter anyone who was serious about getting inside.

He held the door open and gestured for me to enter first like this was a date and he was trying to impress me, but the smile on his face was anything but welcoming. It was sinister, and it made me shiver.

This was a mistake. Matteo wasn’t someone I should mess with.

Ignoring the warnings in my head, I stepped inside the room, and he shut the door behind me. I started to speak, but he grabbed me, shoved me up against the thin wall, and pressed his arm against my throat. He wasn’t cutting off my air—yet—but he was making it clear how easily he could crush my windpipe if I wasn’t prepared to fight back.

I snarled as I shoved at his arm, but he pushed back, pinning me to the wall with his whole body. I’d have to hurt him to free myself; I wasn’t quite ready to do that, even as a rare spike of fear shot through me.

I rarely feared anyone I encountered. I was strong as fuck, and I knew more ways to kill a man than most people could even think of, but Matteo’s strength matched mine and he’d had the same training. I had no assurance I would come out on top in a fight. Instead of having a reasonable reaction like kneeing him in the balls, I reveled in the rush of adrenaline. Why was being pinned by him so fucking hot?

I’ve wanted Jay from the moment I saw him. He’s an attorney like me, and he’s competitive, skilled, and intelligent—not to mention hot as hell.

He also insists he’s straight.

That doesn’t stop him from flirting with me every chance he gets. And it doesn’t keep me from wanting him in my bed.

Our rivalry—and the chemistry between us—ignites when we end up on opposing sides of a case that threatens our lives as well as our professional reputations.
I might have all the resources anyone could ask for, but I don’t know if I can keep us both safe and keep Jay from breaking my heart.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

FORD

I’d been determined to beat Jasper when I stepped on the tennis court today. I didn’t care that he was undefeated in our league. I was just as good of a player as he was, but whenever I stood across from him on the court, he distracted me with his perfect body.

Why were all the men I wanted either straight or world-class assholes—or in Jay’s case, both? And why the hell had he worn his light blue polo, the one that matched his eyes perfectly? It was like he knew what that did to me.

I was usually good at hiding my feelings. I couldn’t have survived law school, much less the courtroom drama I’d experienced, if I hadn’t been able to keep my face impassive. But men like Jay were my kryptonite. Damn gorgeous bastards. They got me all worked up.

My friends teased me endlessly. They said I turned into a lovesick eighteen-year-old every time I got near a man I was crushing on, and with Jay, I was even worse than usual. I fucking hated it, and now here I was about to lose another match to him.

I had to get the next point to have a chance at winning. It was my serve. I could do this. I bounced the ball with my racket and tried to get myself in the zone, but just as I tossed the ball, Jay lifted his shirt to wipe his sweaty face, exposing his perfect abs.

My brain went offline. My racket barely tapped the ball, and it went right into the net.

Jay grinned as the ball rolled to the fence. “One more chance.”

I retrieved the ball and served again, but my concentration was shot, it landed out of bounds.

“Seems like I win again.” Jay’s smug smile made me want to throw my racket and run. He knew how good his torso looked. He’d fucking lifted his shirt on purpose.

He might insist he was straight as an arrow. He might have ruthlessly turned down a drunken proposition from me when he first joined the tennis league, but he never hesitated to flirt with me if it gave him an advantage.

“Best two out of three?” I asked as we both approached the net.

He shook his head as he clasped my hand for an end-of-game handshake. It was all I could do to ignore the heat of his skin and the enticing smell of his sweat. “I have to catch up on some work.”

Jay hadn’t grown up with money like most members of our club, and he liked to pretend he was superior because of his work ethic.

“You’re working on a Saturday evening?” I asked.

“This job isn’t a nine-to-five. Some of us have to actually work instead of having everything handed to us.”

The bitterness in his tone was stronger than usual. He’d ragged me about my easy life plenty of times, but he’d never sounded so angry. I hated how much it hurt. What was up with him today? It wasn’t like he was hurting for money. He couldn’t be a member of the club if he was.

“Are you that dedicated to your job? Or do you not have the stamina to keep up with me?”

I realized what I’d said too late to change the wording. Jay raised his brows as he gave me an assessing look. “Stamina is not a problem for me.”

I doubted it was. As much as I wanted to hate him, if he was willing, I’d let him fuck the hell out of me so I could test the theory.

“Why don’t you use the extra time to work on your tennis game?” Jay said. “Maybe then, you won’t need extra games to beat me.”

I frowned, even letting my lip poke out in a pout—I wasn’t above flirting either. “I need a partner to practice.”

“You could use the wall.”

It did not feel like we were talking about tennis anymore. It was cruel of him to tease me like this while insisting he didn’t like dick. Perverse bastard that I am, I ate it up anyway. And come on, there was always hope, wasn’t there?

No. My friend Miles’s disapproving voice echoed in my head. He’d told me to cancel today’s game when I’d told him I was playing against Jay, even though Miles had known I would never do that.

When Jay had first joined the tennis team, I’d hardly been able to take my eyes off him. I’d flirted with him, and he’d clearly enjoyed the attention. I had no reason to believe he was gay, but I’d decided to proposition him anyway. When he’d turned me down, he’d made it very clear that he had no interest in men and acted disgusted when I asked why he’d flirted back. That should have been enough to make me ignore him, but I had a thing for torturing myself.
I hired Ben under false pretenses. He may think I don’t know who he truly is, but I do. Even so, I'm tempted to trust him. His family may be full of con artists, but Ben is too innocent for his own good. Trustworthy or not, I'm going to keep him in my sights. I know better than to turn my back on a potential enemy, but watching Ben is no hardship. Before he’s worked for me a week, I know that sooner or later, I'm going to make him mine—in every possible way. It doesn’t matter who I have to eliminate to keep him safe. No one but me is ever going to touch him.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

BEN

I took a deep breath as I approached the midtown headquarters of Montgomery Enterprises. I was honestly shocked to have even gotten an interview. No matter how well I’d tailored my résumé, I was seriously under qualified to be the CEO’s assistant. Sure, I’d spent the two years since I graduated from college working as an executive assistant to the president of a small company, but that couldn’t compare to working for the billionaire head of a huge conglomerate.

I wouldn’t have dared applied if I’d had a choice, but my fucking family wasn’t giving me one. My father has been running cons since his teens, and once we were old enough, he expected me and my brother to do his dirty work. I thought I’d broken away from that life, but I made the mistake of not running far enough. When my father came to me, asking me to help him steal product formulas from Montgomery, he made it very clear refusal wasn’t an option.

I fought back nausea as I stepped into the lobby. What would I do if I didn’t get the job? I had no other way of getting access to the kinds of corporate secrets my father was eager to sell.

What if I did get the job? Would that be even worse? I didn’t want to be part of any more of my family’s cons, but the job would pay better than anything I’d ever dreamed of and with a few paychecks I could gain more independence. What if I could stall long enough to….

No, that would never work. My brother would come knocking at my door. He’d never been afraid to use violence to get what he wanted, and he loved money above everything else. He would track me down and make sure I complied with our father’s wishes.

Why hadn’t I left New York, changed my name, and started over? It wasn’t like I had ties here other than a love for the city.

Unlike most corporations, Montgomery had a reputation for taking good care of their employees. Was there any chance Mr. Montgomery would take care of me? It wasn’t like I could tell him I’d come here to steal information, but what I really wanted was his help. No, I had to handle the shitty hand I’d been dealt all by myself—like I always had.

I walked to the concierge desk and greeted a man in a suit far nicer than mine.

“I’m Benjamin Allred. I have an appointment for an interview.”

The man tapped some keys on his computer and nodded. An elevator that stood apart from the main bank slid open. “Take the executive elevator. Mr. Montgomery’s office will be straight ahead when it opens.”

It never occurred to me I’d go straight to Mr. Montgomery’s office or that I’d see him today at all. I assumed this would be a preliminary interview with an underling or at most a vice president or some lower-level executive.

The man frowned. “Do you have a question?”

I realized I’d been staring at him blankly for several seconds. “No. Sorry. I don’t have any questions.” I hurried over to the elevator before he decided to close it and send me on my way.

Once I was inside, the elevator took off, rocketing me to the top of the building. When it stopped, I felt queasier than I had before. When the doors opened, I had to force my mouth to stay closed. The executive lobby was gorgeous. It was quietly elegant with art on the walls that clearly hadn’t come from a random box store like most office buildings.

I saw Mr. Montgomery’s office straight down the hall like I’d been told.

The door was solid dark wood. A desk stood just outside the office, and a middle-aged woman sat behind it. I assumed she was either the assistant who was leaving or someone who had the position temporarily. I glanced around again, in awe of my surroundings.

Suddenly I wanted this job, not because of the trouble I’d be in if I didn’t do what my father demanded, but because I wanted to work here and prove to myself that I was capable of a job like this. I was going to do whatever was necessary to get this job, and I wasn’t going to help my family. I was going to help myself. If I had learned anything from my family, it was that when you go after something, you go after it ruthlessly.
