My best friend's smoking hot brother and black sheep of the family is back home. She's sure he is out for revenge. His target, a takeover on our precious company. So I was tasked with a mission.Seduce her devil of a brother and make him spill all his secrets.I received just one warning Don't EVER fall for the Enemy.Tsk, as if I would…So what if he was my high school crush...So what if he had somehow gotten wayyy hotter…So what if he acquired a dangerous panty-melting frown…Yikes. I better go buy myself panties in bulk…So, what I need to figure out now 1. How to seduce the guy without falling into his bed (Maybe if it's my bed, it doesn't count). 2. Get him to talk (in-between kisses maybe…) 3. Reveal his evil plans (So me and my bestie could ruin it).Umm, did I mention I get very awkward when trying to lie? Each book in this series is a STANDALONE and can be read in any order. And don't forget, we are team HEA all the way! ♥‿♥

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Remi

“Dude, I need a solid.”

I’m not actually a dude, but Kimmy likes to throw that around like it’s December 31st of 1999, and the world is ready to spring into the new millennium. Y2K, baby. I’m already getting a bad feeling about this because aside from the late nineties’ wordage, Kimmy is giving me huge puppy dog eyes. They’re soft brown, and her face is all cherubic as it is, so it works well for her.

“Uhhh, how solid? Are we talking barely frozen water here, or like your Nanny’s big chest freezer that hasn’t been thawed out in twenty years and no one has dug to the bottom of it in even longer, so god knows what kind of horrors are hidden down there kind of solid?” I’m almost scared to ask.

Kimmy hedges and her eyes become one shade bigger and eight degrees more like a puppy dog. “Worse than the freezer.”

“Gah! What could be worse than the freezer? That’s like an eight hundred and seventy-eight on a scale of ten.”

“Van is back.”

Well, that definitely pricks my interest in the form of twinging lady bits, and if we’re talking the hardness scale here, and I’m being candid, then in the form of my nipples just hitting freezer level times ten.

Kimmy’s eyes narrow like she’s zoning in on my nipples, and it’s all I can do to not throw my arm across my chest and hide them. I’m saved when her irises land on my face, but then her eyes narrow like she’s trying to decode what’s going on in my head. I feel like I’m being incinerated by her gaze. When it comes to her big brother, anything she thinks I’m thinking, I’m probably very likely thinking it or have already thought it.

“He’s back,” she hisses, trying to sound tough, but it’s all bluster. “He’s staying with Nanny.”

Well, yeah, because Nanny is awesome. I don’t know a single woman on the planet who is pushing eighty and is still slim as a pole, fitter than any fiddle, and likes to walk around in every color of spandex every day of the week and multiple colors on Sunday. She’s a mystery, a goddess, and the world’s best human I know. She’s also a gravy-making queen of a machine.

“He wouldn’t go near Mom’s house with a ten-foot pole,” Kimmy continues. “That’s just the vibe I got from Nanny on the phone, though. He got back late last night, and she called me this morning at the crack of dawn—her crack, which is the absolute butt crack—at four in the morning. I’m glad she did because then I could give you a warning about having this SOS meeting in my office first freaking thing. I canceled all my other meetings because Van just slotted himself into my number one priority. He’s back to ruin my life. I freaking know it.”

“I doubt he’s back for total or even partial ruination.” I try to stay positive, gulping down a big swallow that tastes like the past, shock, and all my sudden musings about what Van must look like now and how he’s probably filled into his height and grown into a sexy man-body. That’s what happens when someone leaves when they’re eighteen and doesn’t come back until they’re thirty.

Kimmy grips the edge of her huge desk. It’s all modern in here with sleek furniture and crazy huge windows. The best of the best. Her dad was fanatical about that and a lot of other things. After he passed away and Kimmy took over as CEO, she took his office and kept it the same but changed a lot of other things, and now people actually like working here, including me. Before, I just did it for Kimmy because she’s my BFF, with an emphasis on forever.
Get a taste of it in this electrifying addition to the Alphalicious Billionaires.
Each book in this series is a standalone and can be read in any order.
And don't forget, we are team HEA all the way!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Apollo

“My parents are getting a divorce.”

The thing about eleven-year-old girls, even Patience, who has been my best friend for as long as I can remember and is the least like anyone else I’ve ever met, is that they tend to exaggerate.

It’s why I don’t immediately take her seriously. It’s October, and the wind is screaming outside. What few leaves there are on this big sturdy tree that has housed our fort for the past five years shake and tremble and moan right along with it. Before she passed away a few years ago, on days like this, my mom used to say that it was going to be a long, brutal winter, and then she’d laugh and ask when are winters in northern Michigan not long and brutal?

God, I miss her.

“I don’t want to believe it,” Patience whispers as she flips over and puts her feet on the roof of the treehouse. We built it together a few years ago. I guess our dads helped out too. It’s not very well made since, of the four of us, I probably have the best construction skills, and they’re not great by any means.

“I thought they were in love.” It might not be the smoothest thing to say. My parents were so in love. They were always touching each other’s hands and kissing, even right in front of me. They were never shy about that. I know other people’s parents might not be like that, and Patience’s parents definitely aren’t, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other.

“I thought so too.” She taps her bare feet on the roof boards. The plastic blow-up chair and the bean bag beast are off to our left and right, but we wanted to lie on our backs, looking up at the roof. With her toes, and by only a few inches, she misses the shingle nail sticking through the boards where it must have missed something. “They always said marriage was sacred.” She says that with the solemn understanding of an eleven-year-old.

She turns and looks at me with that same intense expression. I’ve always felt that Patience was born knowing the world in ways I just don’t. Maybe in ways that most people don’t, no matter how old they are. I feel like she’s always been like this. There isn’t one thing I don’t like about her. I know we might have only turned eleven a few months ago, but sometimes I dream about growing up and marrying her. I think it would be nice for her to be my wife and for me to be her husband. We wouldn’t have to do all the kissy stuff all the time, but we could help each other. We could give each other advice like we do now. I can’t imagine my life without her. Since our dads were best friends before we were even born, I’ve never known a time without her in it.

“My dad says marriage is supposed to come before anything.”

A sudden, horrible fear bites through me and chills me the way the wind that’s shredding through the gaps in the boards in here can’t. If Patience’s mom and dad get a divorce, what does that mean? Would she have to move away?

She bites at the corner of her thumbnail. “But in private, my mom calls my dad a prick.”

That’s jarring. I’ve never heard her use bad language before. She might not have much patience, which she finds funny because she’s named after that very trait, but she never says foul things. “Sometimes people get mad at each other.”

She grimaces, and I feel like a dolt for just not getting it. “I’m sorry, Pace.” My dad must not know anything about this because if he did, he would have told me, wouldn’t he?

Our dads aren’t just best friends and haven’t just been best friends since they were kids. They run a business together. I thought there wasn’t a single thing they didn’t know about each other.

This sounds serious. It sounds like something that can’t be fixed. I’m already thinking ahead, with more than just a trickle of selfish panic. I can barely breathe. I don’t think Patience’s dad would leave. He’s got his job here with my dad. But her mom? If she leaves… “Are you…you’re not going with her, are you?’

Me as the bride...
Him as the groom?
That's a Big Fat No!
I'll run away if I have to.

A contract marriage.
Inheritance on the line.
And a husband-to-be that I hate.
Definitely not what I was expecting to wake up to this morning.
But guess what, I'm no wallflower and others do not get to decide my future.

My soon to be Ex-Future-Husband will find this out for himself.
Because I'm going to find him...
Even if it means going halfway across the country in god knows what isolated hell hole Mr. Richy Rich is currently enjoying himself in.
And when I do, I'll make him void that stupid contract...
I don't know yet how I'm actually going to force him to do that but that's the plan!

At least that was the plan until I get my low-riding sports car stuck in the middle of nowhere.
And end up having to be rescued by a giant that happens to be my unwanted fiancé.
And the huge frown he had on tells me just how very welcome I am.

What's even worst though, I'm kind of stuck here with the grump and his donkey for the next few days.
And when I say donkey, I literally mean a donkey...

Ready for another Lindsey Hart Rom Com full of souls and fun bits?
Each book in this series is a standalone, so they can be read in any order.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Nina

The only rational response to finding out that your somewhat tyrant family has sort of ruined your life is to pee your pants.
Goddddd, I hate road trips.

Even if, technically, this is the first real one I’ve ever been on. Kind of. By myself, at least.

I also hate that I plugged my phone into the car charger after it died last night. Old habits bite the dust hard, I guess. I switched it on to forty-two missed calls, a full mailbox of voicemails, seven alarmed emails, and more texts than I cared to count. I answered none of it.

Twenty minutes was all the peace I was going to get until I turned the damn thing off again, apparently, because the screen in the car lit up with an incoming call from my mom.

Part of me knows I’m going to have to face her sometime if I don’t want her to send the cops out after me because she’s convinced I’m dead. It’s either answer her now or answer her somewhere down the road. I’m not going to get any less angry or calm down with another day behind me, and I’m certainly not going to let her talk me into turning around and coming back home, so it might as well be now.

I hit answer.

“Nina? Nina Geraldson! I know you’re there! Do you know how worried I’ve been? How worried we all are? Your dad is beside himself. Your grandma nearly had a heart attack. And your brother is threatening to get in his car and come out after you!”

There are a thousand rude ways I could answer that. More than a thousand. But it’s really not worth getting into it. We’re never going to agree about the past, and that’s what I want this to be more than anything. The past. A past I’m currently taking into my own hands and dealing with. I have my big girl panties on, thank you very much. Even if they’re not very fresh because that’s what happens when you have to sleep in your car and not-so-clean clothes overnight.

“What other choice did I have?”

Seriously. What alternative is there other than to pack into a car that is only comfy for a maximum of approximately two hours and eighteen minutes, grab some snacks, some water, and a change of clothes, then shut off my phone because I was absolutely not about to communicate with anyone from my family anytime soon even as I rely on the navigation app on my phone to take me across the country to break up an engagement that I just found out existed.

As in…I found out yesterday. The engagement, or betrothal, or promising me or whatever wretched label best suits it, actually happened long before I was born.

“I just found out I’m the hypothetical child that was supposed to unite our families in holy matrimony. How did you think I’d react?”

“I thought you’d at least be rational. You could have understood that there are bigger forces at play here—”

“Bigger forces? Mom! No!” I can’t believe she’s going to try to talk to me about bigger forces and wonders of the universe and blah, blah, blah. “Just because Granny and Elmira Wonderduck were soulmate sisters doesn’t mean they have any right to make a written contract stating that their grandchildren are going to get married.”

It’s a long story. Super long. Also, Wonderduck is probably the best last name ever, though it must be fake because it’s that good. Fake in the way that it was chosen, picked out, and paid for by some super badass who was tired of having a boring, regular old last name and wanted to shake things up.

“Your granny and Elmira made a promise to each other.”

“I know. You told me all about that yesterday,” I huffed.

“You’re literally the golden child.”

It’s this whole big thing about how, in my family, which sprung from an Italian grandmother who married an American a long time ago after her family came over here and who birthed all dark-haired children, I was the golden-haired exception. I swear it’s not really that weird. My dad’s parents aren’t alive anymore, and I remembered them with grey hair, but I’ve seen photos. I could tell my grandma’s hair was fairly light. She probably had blue eyes just like mine too.

“It’s just…you don’t understand,” Mom goes on pleadingly.

That’s right. I don’t get it. I don’t get how anyone could just decree a marriage.

The whole convoluted business goes something like this: when they were in their early twenties, my granny and Elmira made a pact after basically being friends for a lifetime. They were also rich heiresses, but that aside—no, not that aside because I think that fact is pretty vital to how these things often work out, especially in the world of rich people back in the day. Anyway, they vowed their kids would grow up and get married to each other in order to cement the family bonds and unite us for all eternity or some nonsense. I don’t know why they couldn’t just be besties and leave it at that. If they wanted to go to extremes, they could have just made a blood pact. Why involve the next generation in something they didn’t ask for and didn’t want?

If the devil wears a suit…
Has a permanent frown…
Wet panties left and right..
Expect perfection from everyone…
Well then, that’s my boss.
And today is not my day.
It’s never your day when you get called to his office.
But an even worse day when he broodingly ask you to marry him.
And apparently, no is not an answer he will take.
So, does that mean I am now supposed to call my devil of a boss my pumpkin boo?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

LEON

Like everyone else, Darby Caughill probably has very good reason to dislike me greatly. But luckily for me, she doesn’t need to like me. She just needs to marry me.

I swivel in my desk chair with my cell gripped tightly in my fist. The urge to hurl it at the wall is monstrous. I guess I’ve earned my nicknames. They call me Monster Montague. That or my favorite Lord Lee On Poo, shortened down over the months to Lord Poo. The first has a nice ring to it. I don’t mind it at all. The second irks me, but only because the people who work for me can’t say my last name, which is part of the name of the damn company they work for. They’re calling it Mont-a-gue, not Mon-tag, which is the right way to say it.

One monitor pings on the side of my desk, and I swing back around. My head is a mess this afternoon after the call. My brain feels like someone opened up my skull and rammed shards of glass into the gray matter. My left eye is twitching because I can already feel it coming on. Pain. Hot, like the edge of a blade, stabbing behind my eyes. My teeth also ache from grinding them.

Stress is a trigger.

Sunlight is a trigger.

Being called any version of Lord Poo is often a trigger.

Triggers are a trigger.

My whole fucking life is a trigger for the pain.

I’ve learned to cope with the stress, even if everyone thinks I’m strange. I’m also rich. Aren’t rich people always a bit strange? I’ve learned to handle the stress because I live with it daily. The threat of deportation, however? Not so much.

It’s that new, added stress that’s making my head feel white-hot. My stomach rolls nastily, roiling in a way that makes acid climb up and burn the back of my throat. The first signs that I need to get the hell out of here are already happening, but I’m not leaving this desk or office until I have what I need.

I’m about to pick up my office phone to call my assistant when my computer pings again. I glance at the screen, and my hand falls away from the phone.

Oh, this is good. This is too good.

One of many chat windows pops up, and I survey the whole system. Each and every message any employee sends in this place is monitored by my IT team, security, and me. It’s a new system we have in to facilitate communication between departments but we also needed to ensure there were no information leaks from sensitive departments. I guess most people already forget that someone is reading these on the back end. It’s not that they don’t care because there’s no way they’d risk sending things like this to each other and saying the things they do if they thought someone was actually reading them.

Darby’s name pops up, entering the chat between herself and three other employees. Friends of hers, I assume. I click on her chat and let my eyes browse the screen, sitting back as the messages come in. The pounding in my head eases up just a little since they are rather entertaining.

Jane: Be careful. Lord Poo is in a serious mood today.

Darby: Thanks for the warning, but I’ve got things under control.

Darby’s face flashes through my mind even though she’s just a few offices down from mine, where the big open floor and everyone else’s cubicles are. I would give everyone an office if I could, but the building isn’t big enough for all those walls. I also know for a fact that when given too much privacy, people get out of control. Such as these chats, for example.

Darby, though, is sweet. She’s twenty-four, but she’s so level-headed and efficient that she seems older despite looking younger. Some people might call her plain, bordering on mousy, with her long brown hair, which is always worn in a perennial bun at the nape of her neck, and her pale blue eyes and creamy skin. She even has the waiflike stature to match. But others might call her a librarian fantasy in the waiting.

I don’t know why, but whenever I think about who those others might be—on either side of the equation—I have a strong desire to start breaking things. Breaking things is a bad idea for me, as indicated by the whole triggers for pain thing listed above.

He fully knew what would happen to his stuff if he didn’t come and get it. When I said I’d light it on fire, I truly meant it.

Three days ago, I joined the ranks of clichéd women all over the planet. The ranks of the cheated on, poor women who have a rock on their finger and the vague promise of happily ever after on the horizon and still come home to find their fiancé tupping another woman on the kitchen table.

Yes, that’s right. Tupping. I actually have two degrees. One in English—in which I majored in classical lit and minored in theatre, because duh, they’re an excellent fit together—and a second in business since the former didn’t exactly pay the bills. And yes! Even with my two degrees, I’m still calling it tupping.

I was actually in school for six years, and thanks to my business degree, I currently have a job. I work for a company whose focus is ethical and sustainable fashion. Well, you know, clothes made with bamboo and hemp that are super soft, stylish, and planet-friendly. That’s the company. My parents just can’t figure out how I ended up here in the fashion world. Sometimes, I even amaze myself. I suppose that even though a person can’t draw or sew, they can still work here as a manager, which I do. I worked my way up the ranks for the past five years to get to where I am.

Anyway, back to the tupper…I suppose he once had a name before he became dead to me. Byron the butthole. That’s his name. Byron the bastard. Byron the burner of souls and destroyer of hope. Byron the bozo. He has quite the alliterative name.

And currently, at this very moment, Byron, the biggest butthole bastard in all of the land of burned souls and destroyed hopes, is standing outside my workplace. He’s blowing up my phone with all sorts of sappy nonsense, but the long and short is that he wants me back. He says he’s so very, very sorry and that he’ll never stick his very um—well—inadequately sized fire poker into someone else’s fireplace again. According to him, he’s desperate to win back my trust. Blah, blah, bullshit, blah, bullshit, and even more bullshit.

Any other day, I’d march out there and send him off with a few very choice words, all while keeping my cool because the freak out has happened, and what’s done is done. I’ve since made peace with the fact that the last three years of my life were totally for nothing, relationship-wise, at least. I was having doubts about getting married anyway, so he really did me a favor there.

Although, he’s not currently doing me a favor by loitering outside when this morning is a big morning for me as well as for the rest of the place. We were just bought out by a huge name in the fashion industry. Julie Louise Paris—I doubt that’s her real name—has been designing haute couture since the eighties, and her stuff is the kind of thing you see in magazines and red carpets. You know those dresses that cost like six figures a piece? That would be her. She has shops in all the big and fancy cities around the world.

And we all know why she bought us out.

For her son.

Her son is a bit of a tupper himself. Or whatever. I don’t really know anything about him other than what the magazines say, but we all took an interest after we found out we were being bought out and that he was going to be our new CEO. In his case, I’d say he’s likely going to be our Clueless Executive officer. He knows everything about partying, spending money, dating models and actresses, pissing his grandmom off, spending her money, causing scandals—the usual rich people things—and nothing about actually working in the industry.

That’s what people say, and it’s basically all I have to go on.

My phone dings again, and I realize I’ve drifted off into a happier place. Sort of, though not really. When did my life turn into an epic poo pile? Well, I guess that would be eight days ago when we found out about getting acquired by Julie Louise Paris. I didn’t think a week was a long time, but I’ve since learned otherwise. With a heavy sigh, I turn my attention to more of the bullshit, bullshit, and extra bullshit texts.

Byron: Buttercup, please come out and let me talk to you. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking. Please. Give me another chance.

Byron: Pleeeeeease! You know I love you! You know I’d do anything for you!

Apparently, that doesn’t include monogamy, but maybe Byron thought it was supposed to come after the wedding, and the before bits didn’t count.

Right.
Maybe the situation is not that bad. I mean I just need to ignore him, right? How hard can that be?
People ignore their neighbors and boss every day.
It’s not like he is here to take revenge for breaking his heart so many gazillion years ago.
It’s not like he would purposefully not give me the promotion I have been working so hard for.

For example, it’s Monday. Everyone hates Mondays, but not me. I like Mondays. Mondays are great. When everyone else is dogging it in the office, making excuses about weekends and coffee and blah this, blah that, I’m working my ass end off. I’ve been doing that for years—Mondays and every other day of the week. Sometimes even Saturdays and Sundays too. Often unpaid, because I’ve had an ultimate goal since day one—to make manager and be the one at the top, or at least near it. To make piles of money, pay off all my college debt, get a bigger house, and buy a newer car.

Today’s the day. It’s Monday. Ahhh.

Yes, Mondays might stink all around the world, but this particular Monday smells like a freshly cracked can of tuna. And no, not the fishy and gross ones. There is nothing wrong with tuna because it happens to be one of my favorite foods, especially the little spicy tuna cans with the tiny pepper inside. I eat that baby down, each and every time. To me, it smells a little like tacos, and I think everyone can agree that tacos are universally delicious.

Okay, so I normally like Mondays, but this Monday is turning out to be a little spicier than I anticipated—the sassy and feral kind of spicy—which isn’t the good kind of spicy that comes packed in with the tasty little pepper in those delicious tuna cans. This Monday is as spicy as Satan’s ass end blowing out flames after a bad taco binge, and I know it would not smell universally tasty. At all.

I have a meeting with my boss at two, and it just so happened I also had a dentist appointment that I booked six months ago, which I forgot to change. They charge a fee if you miss the appointment or cancel without giving twenty-four hours notice, and they just called me late last night to remind me about it. I figured I could take an extended lunch break, hustle my ass over there, get my dang tooth filled since the cavity has been lingering for six freaking months (seriously, no one likes the dentist—how can it be that freaking busy?), and get my butt back to work in time for the meeting.

The Meeting. The big one. This is the day I finally get my promotion. I can smell it.

Or maybe what I can actually smell is my body odor coming from my sweat-drenched body, which is stuck in a hot car in the middle of a freaking hot day, in a traffic jam, with no air conditioning. Those goals I was mentioning? I think I should bump the new, or at least new to me, car up to the top of the list. This one has seen better days. Let me tell you, Amarillo can be motherclucking hot.

My blouse is so drenched with sweat that I could probably wring it out, and my bra is like an oversoaked sponge or something equally as gross. At this point, I think it might actually be weighing down my ta-tas instead of holding them up. My pants are slick, but not in a good way because they’re slick with my perspiration, and my panties are also soaked. I can’t remember the last time this happened, but this one is also not in a good way. They’re wet in a crotch sweat, leg sweat, all mingled up kind of way.

I glance around the steering wheel and crane my head through the open window, trying to see what the ever clucking fucking hell is going on up ahead to bring things to a standstill like this. The office isn’t that far. I wonder what would happen if I ditched the car and make a break for it. It’s just after one, and at this rate, I’m never going to get back in time to get my promotion anyway. How embarrassing would that be? Would my boss change his mind?

My mouth is still numb from the shots at the dentist, and as I duck my head back into the car, I barely manage to avoid biting my tongue off.

I’m starting to freak out from stress overload, so I grab my phone and dial my BFF. Sadie is always good at calming me down. She’s also a freelance writer, and since she keeps some freaky-deeky hours, I know she’ll likely pick up.

“Hey! What’s going on?” Sadie does indeed answer, beating her phone from sending me to voicemail by probably half a ring.

“I’m stuck in traffic, trying to get back to the office. I think I’m going to get the promotion today, but I’m freaking out because I’m not going to make it on time. I’m thinking about ditching the car and hoofing it,” I spit out, my words coming out somewhat garbled because of the numbness.
Wrong in just about every single way that wrong could be defined or spelled.”

“I didn’t know wrong could be spelled any other way, so technically it’s just wrong in one way.”

“Yeah. The only way that counts,” I huff as I sink a little lower in the passenger seat.

Currently, I’m seriously effed. It’s a freaking effing eff I got my own self into.

“It was my idea, but you were all for it.” Dean flashes me his best and most convincing you’re-not-as-screwed-as-you-think-you-are grin. And it looks pretty good on Dean.

I relax just half a degree, but it doesn’t stop me from slithering down a few more inches on my leather seat. I’m wearing a pretty short dress, I’m sweating because Dean hates AC, and I’m seriously nervous. Like seriously. And my ass is also kind of sticking to the seat.

Yes, I’ve let Dean talk me into some pretty stupid shit over the years. We’ve been best friends since we were in diapers. Technically, I guess since birth, but I can’t remember that far back. Our parents were friends long before that, so I guess it was fate. Or destiny. As a little girl, I thought I’d marry Dean one day. My childish hopes and dreams were shattered when I was fourteen, and Dean came out to his parents. He actually told me first. It broke my heart a little because Dean is seriously amazing. He’s probably the best person I know. It drives me crazy that he’s been so unlucky in love. He’s had his heart broken a million times, and as someone who once had a crush on him, is his best friend, and also like a sister to him, it breaks my heart every single time.

I keep telling him that he should just fly solo for a while. Get his bearings. Do the things he wants to do. AKA, just like me. He keeps telling me that going without sex for two years isn’t exactly appealing, and he doesn’t do casual. Not that I do casual. I don’t. I’ve just been burned one too many times, and after the last time when I caught my ex banging not one but two girls in my own freaking bed, that was that. I swore off men indefinitely.

Which has turned into two years, one month, and twenty-two days. Yes, I still remember exactly what day I caught Billy having a ménage a trois in my bed. I should have burned those sheets. Throwing them out just wasn’t good enough, but I did give the mattress away for free the next day. Even though I gave a prior warning about the bad voodoo that was sure to accompany it, someone still came and picked it up. I hope they had better luck with it than I did.

“Hey. Come on. We talked about this. We’re almost there. Please tell me you’re not going to bail on me before we even take a look around and talk to a few people.”

I can tell Dean is worried, but even with his brow scrunched up and lips pulled tight, he’s gorgeous. He’s a seriously attractive guy. Jacked. Athletic. Muscly. But in a streamlined kind of way. He also has dark hair, dark eyes, and a lethal smile. Not only that, but he’s six feet something, always well dressed, and has looks that could slay just about anyone.

And they do. I’ve watched it happen. Somehow, no matter how many times things don’t work out for Dean, he doesn’t get discouraged. I have to give him props for not getting bitter about love.

“I just wish you had a friend who would agree to do this,” I groan.

“Wouldn’t work. Your parents and my parents know all of my friends. My parents are going to the wedding. They’d spill for sure. You have to find someone who has no ties to either of us.” He gives me a sympathetic look. “Just hang in there. You’re good. You’ve got this. We’ve got this.”

This being the plan that I’m coming to regret more and more.

My twenty-six-year-old sister, Susan, who is two years younger than me, is getting married in a week. And I happen to be her maid of honor. I’m happy for her. Really. She’s marrying a great guy, and they’re going to have a good life and make beautiful babies and everything. The only thing is, I have to go back home to Sisston, which is a small town two hours from Seattle. It’s where we all grew up—me, Dean, and Susan.

She’s getting married in our parent’s backyard because she’s sappy and traditional like that, which I think is actually super sweet. We have parents who are still so in love—thirty years after they got married—it’s sickening. Parents who worry about me constantly. Parents who don’t think flying solo and being an independent woman is the way one should live one’s life.

She might talk back to me like she is the boss. She might even be on the brink of becoming my archnemesis. But my son adores her and that's all that counts.
Unless you don’t have a home to go to because you had to mass exodus when your parents suddenly lost their minds. Cut. Off. No money. Frozen bank account. No car. Merry freaking Christmas.

I guess you could say I did it to myself, but that’s not entirely true. I like to think I have principles, and one of them is that I will not allow myself to be married off to a complete stranger.

It’s also not true that I dug my own grave because I’m clearly not dead, and I didn’t choose to kill the relationship between myself and my parents. We might not be super close, the way some families are. I might have primarily been sent to boarding schools while they made tons of money and lived a lifestyle befitting their status. They might have chosen where I went to college and what I studied—business, of course. But still. Deep down, they’re good people. They were raised the same way, so they can’t really help it. They’re just trying to look after me. And they do love me and want what’s best for me.

At least, I thought so.

Until they betrothed me to a total stranger.

Betrothed. It’s such an archaic term, but I can’t think of a better word to use. They really did betroth me to some asshole. As in, they promised my hand in marriage to seal some sort of business deal. Yes. Because they don’t have enough money already. They want more. They want this giant merger between two companies, and I have no idea where they came up with the idea because I don’t even know what the other company is. I don’t want to know. I refused to look up the name Maxwell Stone because I don’t want to know anything about the deal. I honestly don’t understand much of what went on in their heads because I sat there and listened to about four point eight seconds of it before I flew out of my chair and ran out of the room.

I have no doubt they’ll cut me off now.

Maybe that’s not a big deal to some people, but I’m a Hardington. Elizabeth Euphenia Gloria Hardington, or Feeney, because I hate the name Elizabeth. It was my dad’s mother’s name. I have nothing against her; I just never knew her, and right from birth, I seemed to hate the name and any variation of it. My mom’s mom was named Euphenia. She died a year before I was born, and my mom always promised herself that if she had a girl, she’d get the name in there somewhere, so she did.

Euphenia is a bit of a mouthful for everyone, so I go by Feeney. It’s easy and non-threatening. People can say it, even if they think it’s weird. Lucky for me now, the world is full of strange names, especially when parents compete with each other to see who can give their babies the most creative names ever.

After cutting my parents off the minute they said something about a merger and a marriage to some dude I don’t know, I went to my room and packed a bag. I threw in everything I thought would be worth something, but it wasn’t much. Just my phone, tablet, and laptop—no jewelry because everything is stored in dad’s safe, and I hate wearing it anyway, so it’s never around my room. I was able to pack two designer purses—my spare and the one I use—two pairs of designer shoes, two changes of clothes, and the cash I had in my wallet at the time. It was only four hundred dollars, sadly. That’s a lot to carry around, but it won’t get me far in the real world.

I no longer have a working credit card since I can bet my dad froze it the second I walked out of the house, seeing as it was jointly in his name. So was my bank account, so that’s, of course, frozen as well.

You know what sucks? Being hopeless this close to Christmas. Being hopeless in general.

Thank god we live in Florida. Pinecrest, of course, so we blend in with all the other well-off families. My parents have houses elsewhere too, but they’ve owned this one since before I was born, and it’s the one I call home. Or rather, called home. As in, past tense.

So here I am. Hopelessly slogging down the street in my canvas runners, my ripped up skinny jeans, my plaid shirt, and a cardigan. My car is in my dad’s name too, so I couldn’t take it. I literally had to walk out of the subdivision and just keep going. I’m still trying to hold my head up high and pretend like my heart, head, and shoulder aren’t breaking from the stupid, heavy duffel bag.

Operation ex-stepsister seduction
I know how it sounds. And no, I'm not backing off.
There was a time when we were more best friends than siblings, Until the great fall-out between our parents.
I always wondered how she was doing. But I never looked her up. I was too busy making billions.
So, imagine my absolute shock, When she comes blazing right into my board meeting, Legs a mile long, curves by the millions, And absolutely ready to take me down a couple of pegs.
Plans which include his ex-stepsister. Because this devil wants her.
They think they know me. They might even make a good case for their knowledge, based on both my business and personal reputation, and over the years, I’ve made quite a reputation, but we’ll get to that later.

There are numerous things I detest in life, but there are three and a half things that really do it for me. The kind that’s like stubbing your precious little baby toe against a hard object in the middle of the night.

How does one hate three and a half things? Well, the half is eggs. I like them half of the time. The other half of the time, they are an abomination that should be wiped off the earth for all I care. Especially. Eggs. With. Runny. Yolks. Might as well just crack the thing straight onto a plate and serve it up. Hard. Pass.

The other two things I absolutely cannot stand under any circumstances are fake people and pizza. Why pizza? Because there have been at least six times when I’ve eaten it and barfed soon after, and now, it evokes such disgust in me that I can’t even look at the damn stuff without my stomach wanting to eject all its contents.

The third thing took me by surprise. I actually just learned today, on seeing the newest addition to my tech empire, that there is one thing worse than eggs, pizza, and fake people.

That third, magically shitty element comes in the form of one Zoe Scarlet Anderson, age thirty. My ex-stepsister.

Yes, it is possible to have an ex-stepsister. First of all, it requires two people, namely my mom and her dad, who are completely toxic when it comes to relationships and each other. Mash them together for four years, add in a marriage which is pretty much shit in its own right, and then toss in a hint of a divorce from fucking hell (yes, fucking hell is worse than regular hell), and voila. There you have it.

I haven’t seen Zoe since I was fourteen and she was twelve. At the risk of sounding like a huge asshole, and probably a few other things, I’ll just say she was the geekiest duck in the pond. But long story short, she’s changed. A lot. Those eighteen years have been kind to her. She was always a tomboy back then, trying hard to prove that anything the boys could do, she could do, and do better. Now she has boobs and a tight butt. Sans braces and glasses, it’s easy to see why the entire boardroom, even some of the women, are currently salivating at her as she walks past the glass windows with her head held high like a fucking goddess, a scowl on her face like she’s ready to go to war. And no, it doesn’t detract from her beauty whatsoever.

There’s this shitty part about takeovers that I prefer to do myself. Like, show up in person in a company that just sold out to me, assure people that they won’t lose their jobs, and it isn’t the end of the world. Change is good. Rebranding is good. It’s all good.

Except, in this case, it’s not all fucking good.

This case is the worst-case scenario.

I had no idea Zoe Anderson worked for the small software development company I just added to my inventory. No. Fucking. Idea. That is, right until she rounded the corner all of ten seconds ago and started a walk past the boardroom, which happens to be lined up with floor to ceiling clear glass. She started at one end of the hall, and now, half a minute later, she’s reaching for the door. The testosterone in the room, which is admittedly mostly full of men—something I plan on changing—just ratcheted up somewhere near the level of disgustingly unbearable. I think the two women in the room might even be giving off a little bit of it, because yes, Zoe Anderson has turned into someone who is just that hot.

She’s wearing the classic SILF (which is secretary I’d like to fuck) combo—a white blouse that is almost sheer enough to see her lace bra, a tight black pencil skirt, towering black heels, and a regal bearing that says she knows she looks killer in it. She’s not tall; she’s probably only around 5’6”, but those heels highlight her sleek yet toned legs, and her ass could make a grown man weep. Her breasts are generous, and they fill out her blouse well, but it’s her face that is truly striking. Somewhere in those eighteen years, she morphed into something most definitely not tomboyish.

Her green eyes, which used to be hidden away behind the world’s thickest, biggest, and ugliest glasses, flash when she pushes the door open and walks into the room. Her teeth, now straight and pearly white, grace everyone with a genuine smile.
CHAPTER 1

Sutton

Dear Electronic Diary Thingy,

My boss, as usual, is a giant, epic, total, gargantuan, MASSIVE, pain in the ass.

Okay, that’s nothing new. I have enough evidence stored away in all your saved files by now that this point is just a given. I’m not going to delete it because it gives me satisfaction to vent, which I guess is what this whole project is about. Granny told me to write. So, I’m writing. Yes, I’m pointedly ignoring the fact that Granny also said Philippe Wilson isn’t just an ass—he also has a nice ass. And that if she was fifty years younger, she might have considered getting remarried again. Or at least entertain naughty thoughts. *Shiver*. Thinking about Granny having naughty thoughts about my boss is just about the grossest, most unnatural thing in the universe. I’d rather think naughty thoughts of my own. Like how to get back at said boss for giving me two different cost report sheets to complete by Monday at five minutes to five on a Friday. When I fetch him his sandwiches every single day, I already get the full-fat mayo instead of light mayo. He’s never complained. That’s about the extent my evil goes. I know. #SadAF. That’s me. So yes, come Monday, I had those reports done. I also never complain when Philippe—who by the way isn’t even French but likes to say his name like he is even though his last name is Wilson, which is also clearly NOT French—gives me his credit card statements with like a thousand charges and two receipts to try and reconcile. Nope. I never say a thing.

I leave my cursor blinking on the next line and stare at the white screen until my eyes threaten to drop out of my head and roll onto the carpet. Yes. They’re that dry.

I finally tear my eyes away to glance down at the keyboard. I hover my finger over the delete button, but leave it there, like a gentle caress. Yup. My keyboard is about the only thing I’ve gently caressed lately. And no, my lack of a love life doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that I live with my eighty-four-year-old grandmother. The house is Granny’s, but that’s not the issue. I have my own basement. I pay her rent. I do have my own life. So, no, it’s not like that. Really. I’m twenty-seven. Independent. I have a good, well-paying job, even if I don’t like it very much. I have a Business Degree. I have a life. I just don’t have a love life.

Maybe it’s Granny’s example that did me in. She was always my favorite person in the world. My parents both worked, and they were always really busy, so I spent a lot of time with Granny growing up. This included my entire summer vacation every single year, but I’m not complaining. I had the time of my life. Granny and I golfed. She taught me how to play the guitar and the organ. She gave me my love of garage sales and thrift stores, and she honed me into a lean, mean, card-playing machine. She also taught me how to shoot whiskey. Okay, that one was later.

Most of all, she taught me that I could be a woman in this world and make it on my own. My grandpa died when I was four, so Granny’s been on her own for twenty-three years. She never wanted to remarry. She never even went on another date. She loved my grandpa, but she also tells me that after he died, she had to start living life on her own, doing everything for herself, and after she got used to it, she never wanted to go back.

I have my own little office here, even if it is the size of a tiny little broom closet, but it does give me the advantage of four walls and privacy. When footsteps sound in the hall, I quickly click save on the vent piece I was working on and clear it off my screen. A second later, Cherry, our receptionist, pops her head in the door. She’s blonde, in her early twenties, and gets really worked up when Philippe turns into an office tyrant. P.S. He acts this way most of the day.

When Philippe isn’t yelling, he likes to pretend that he can’t actually talk. He goes all silent and broody, and it’s creepy. Basically, it fits his personality. He has a broody name. He has long, jet black hair. Like, shoulder-length. His chiseled features—and what I like to call pretty nose and lips—are totally at odds with the rest of his body. Not that he’s not chiseled there, because heck yes he is, but he’s tall and broad and jacked in a way that makes women salivate all over before they realize what an ass he can be.
