“Yeah, well, going silent for a month wasn’t the right way either, you know.” Jesus, I need to insert my foot in my mouth. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Attempting to keep quiet is easier said than done.

“Amelie.” He says my name quietly, garnering my attention yet again. “You get who my father is. There was no way I wanted him to catch wind of the woman I’ve been spending my time with. Do you know what he would have done to you? Your father looks like a joke next to mine. Christ, I couldn’t have that. I needed a plan in place. Ezra needed the heat taken off his woman, and I’d already been down here. Theo is in California, both of us taking Four Brothers in a different direction, a necessity to stay fresh in the technology world. I found you, and keeping you safe, far away from Governor Wescott, was all I could think about. I worked night and day. My phone could have been hacked into if I so much as made the wrong move. It wasn’t right, but it wasn’t wrong either. Hopefully, one day soon, you’ll understand what you mean to me,” he drops an atomic bomb in my lap. I’m sitting here stunned into silence. I should get up, go to him, at least hug him. Of course, that’s not what I do; the simple thing to do slips away from me. Instead, I watch as he stands up from his seat, phone in hand, and walks toward me. “I’m going to grab your toast, make a few phone calls, then I’ll be back.” The kiss he drops on my lips when I look up as his presence looms over me, well, yeah, I still haven’t found the words necessary to respond.

“Okay.” It comes out on a croak.

“Alright, you and me, Amelie. We’re going to make this work,” are his parting words. My stomach somersaults for another reason. Three times today I’ve had to calm myself down in one form or the other. Though, this one might be my favorite yet, a close second to the desire Boston illuminates in my body whenever we’re pressed against one another. I listen as he opens the door, steps inside, and grabs the plate my mom brought up. I know there’s butter and cream cheese, a concoction I’ve always loved on one of my favorite breakfast foods. He sets down the plate, then closes the door as he goes back inside this time, leaving me to contemplate what to make of this new life of mine. One thing is for sure: I’m calling Eden as soon as I’m done eating.

“Ground rules. I can see you’re going to be the type of man who attempts to bulldoze a path of destruction should you not get your way,” Amelie tells me as Scott navigates our way to her doctor’s appointment hours later. I made a few calls, one to Parker, asking him to set up a conference call with the rest of our brothers since everyone is going every which way. Tomorrow morning, we’ll all hop on the call, and I’ll tell them what’s going on, figuring more will be ironed out after this appointment. Amelie’s nerves as well as mine will be a little more settled.

“Go on.” Little does she know rules are meant to be broken, and I’ll never be the one to agree to them. Though, there’s no harm in her thinking she’ll get her way.

“First, I’m going to ask the questions and receive the answers before you attempt to stampede your way in like a herd of elephants. Also, while we’re on the topic, no bringing up the fact that I’ve been sick when smelling certain aromas. It’s normal, and so is fainting.” Scott coughs attempting to cover his laugh, while I’m seething inside with Amelie thinking it’s okay to conk out ice fucking cold.

“Wow, you think highly of me. I’m being compared to a bulldozer and an elephant. It’s a good thing I don’t have any insecurities. I’ll agree to you asking the questions first. Should you not ask the ones I’d like answers to, I’ll go from there. As for you passing the hell out, that will absolutely be brought to the doctor’s attention.” Amelie huffs and turns her head away from me when only moments ago, she had no problem giving me those pretty green orbs. Parker warned me what it would be like when I found the one who’d make me fall. Ezra, too, for that matter. Both of them found their life partner. Nessa and Millie are best friends; they also have an independence streak a mile wide. It seems Amelie is right there with them. She can be pissed all she wants. If the mother of my child can’t protect herself, I’ll be doing it for her.
