“Fine,” I say in a short tone. “Give me your address and let me know when to move in.”

He grins, looking even more handsome, and I hate him for it.

“I knew you’d say yes,” he says in a smooth tone. “How about next week? Is that early enough? Hand me your cell and I’ll text you my address so you know where you’re going.”

I hand him my old flip phone, which is embarrassing in and of itself, but it’s the only thing I can afford. He adds his number and gives it back to me.

“I’ll see you soon, baby,” he says before leaning in to kiss my cheek. It’s just a light brush of his lips but my heart begins to race as my pupils dilate. Damn, this man is sexy. But Jethro backs up, grinning before giving me a light squeeze on my waist.

“Don’t get too excited, sweetheart,” he whispers. “There’s more where that came from.”

Then, the confounding man saunters off before disappearing down the long hallway, and I stand there, shocked and practically unable to breathe. OMG, did that just happen? Did I just agree to be this man’s plaything in exchange for a roof over my head and food to eat? I should be ashamed, but instead, I’m secretly looking forward to my new life as a kept woman.

Although it sounds crazy, it only took me thirty minutes to pack all my worldly belongings because I don’t have much. Just a few clothes, some kitchen utensils, and my beloved plants. Other than that, I’m leaving everything behind because Jethro doesn’t need my furniture, and that includes the creaky old rocking chair I found by the side of the road.

Now, it’s Monday and I’m officially moving into the handsome man’s place. But am I really ready for this? I take a deep breath as Jethro strides into my apartment, grabbing the last box.

“That’s all?” he asks, looking around the spartan space.

“Yep,” I nod. “That’s all the stuff I have. Thanks for helping me move by the way. I appreciate it, and I could’ve had Tanya or someone from class come over.”

The handsome man just shrugs.

“No, it’s fine. Besides, I have a truck which comes in especially handy during times like these.” With that, he winks and disappears with my last box in his arms. I smile to myself before following him outside. Even though I still barely know what I’m getting into, the day seems brighter as I hop into the cab of his vehicle. Moments later, Jethro climbs in too, his huge form behind the wheel.

“Ready?” he asks, one black brow quirked.

“Ready!” I chirp back, snapping on my seatbelt. He revs the car, and for some reason, it feels like we’re starting off on an adventure together, which to some extent, we are.

After about twenty minutes, we pull up to a complex that has a number of white townhouses inside. There are minuscule patches of emerald green lawn outside each structure, as well as a gated pool and even a cabana over in the back.

“Wow, this is nice,” I marvel as we pull up in front of one of the townhouses. “I thought you said you had a condo.”

“I do have a condo,” Jethro growls. “It’s just a two-story one, that’s all.”

“Ah,” I nod. “Well, it looks amazing.”

We get out and haul my stuff inside. My new roommate grimaces.

“So yeah, you can see that I’m not big on interior design, but let me show you around,” he begins.

I grin.

“It’s not bad,” I venture. “Just a little empty.”

He grins too.

“A lot empty,” he corrects. “But yeah, this is the living room,” he says, gesturing to a huge room on the left. “It’s double height, and I keep thinking I should get a massive chandelier just to fill the space a little.”

I nod, craning my neck to stare at the ceiling.

“Wow,” is all I manage.

“The kitchen is over here,” Jethro continues, gesturing to a pretty tiled kitchen with a stainless steel fridge, “and up the stairs are the two bedrooms. Come on,” he says. We make our way to the second story and onto a cream-carpeted landing. Then he throws open two doors. “As you can see, mine is on the left, and yours is the right. The bathroom is at the end of the hall, but we’re going to have to share, sweetheart, because this place only has one, so I hope you don’t have too many shampoos, perfumes, and cosmetics because there probably isn’t enough shelf space.”

I giggle a little.

“Oh, I’m not worried about it. I don’t use much make-up.”

Jethro nods approvingly.

“I can tell. Also, if you like, I can hire a cleaning lady to come in once a week to make sure things stay sanitary, since we’ll be living in close quarters and all.”

I shake my head. “Oh no, I can’t ask you to do that. Besides, I’ve lived in much smaller spaces with other people, and I’m good at cleaning too. I can even clean your stuff, if you like,” I venture.
