His question made me laugh. “Bigger than Eli but not by much.”

Eyes widening, he nodded slowly. “Then that explains the long hours this week. You sure you’ll be free on Friday? I can wait if you think that won’t work.”

How long was he going to be in town?

“No, we’ve got a few long nights this week, but if we’re not done by Friday then something has gone drastically wrong.” And if it got to that point, Reece would go insane.

He had the patience of a saint…right up until a certain point.

“Great. Then Friday it is and we’ll plan on me making dinner at your place.” His words left my mouth gaping and I knew I looked ridiculous, but he conveniently ignored that part. “I figure your place is easiest because you have your toys and all your goodies.”

Goodies?

How little could I get without him thinking it was weird?

Nope, that was not the question I should’ve been thinking about. Unfortunately, my brain got stuck. “I have my stuff.”

Duh.

“Great.” Bishop’s excited tone just barreled right over my obviously brain-dead response. “We’ll figure out an exact time later this week and I’m going to have lots of questions to make sure I’m planning everything right.”

Questions?

Friday?

Really?

“Okay.” When had I lost my marbles?

“Perfect.” He beamed, picking at his muffin again. “It’s a date.”

A date?

What kind of date?

A playdate?

A date-date?

A figure of speech date?

Wasn’t he dating Cohen?

When I realized I couldn’t answer a single one of my random questions, I sighed. “Yep, it’s a date.”

Kind of.

When had friendships gotten this complicated?

Chapter 10

Bishop

“If you keep disappearing like this, I’m going to have to come find you and kill you.” Archer was doing his best to sound frustrated and rough, but his pretend Dom voice was so cute I laughed.

He was smart and funny and kinky as hell, but there wasn’t a dominant bone in the guy’s body.

Rolling my eyes as I laughed and stretched out on the guest bed in Wesley’s house, I shrugged even though he couldn’t see me over the phone. “I’m like half an hour from you at this point, literally just the other side of town. What’s stopping you?”

We’d always been online or phone buddies, so I knew as shy as he was it would be hard to move from the safety of the internet to the real world. But I had to give him shit for it because that was to be expected.

“Because it’s weird. You’re supposed to be like ten years away, not right around the corner.” The whine in his voice had me trying not to laugh again.

“You’re insane.” And hilarious. And one of my best friends. “But since I seem to attract the most interesting people to my life, I’m just going to shrug and accept it.”

Because questioning it and all the insanity I’d run into at Leashes & Lace wouldn’t help my mental state.

Sighing dramatically, Archer had a pout in his voice. “You disappeared again.”

He was right…kind of.

Aside from the odd times that I hadn’t been able to text him at work, I’d always been easy to reach. The train ride from Texas to Virginia had been the only time I could remember where it’d been hard to reach me…except for the last few days.

“What did you do? Do you need bail money?” There was an eagerness in his voice that said he was kind of hoping I’d done something completely ridiculous.

Laughing, I tried to explain. “No, I just…well, I might have met someone.”

Maybe?

“Who? What someone? Why does that mean you can’t answer your phone? Is he making you cut off ties to your friends? That’s not the good kind of weird.” Archer had charged right in, so I knew he’d keep going if I didn’t stop him.

“No, he’s nice.” Cohen was beyond nice. “I just got so wrapped up in our first…date, maybe, that I forgot my phone at Wesley’s place.”

It was probably a date…I just wished I knew how Cohen had seen things.

Archer paused and I’d seen him enough on video chats to know he’d be frowning and have his thinking face on. “Wait. Go back.”

Before I could do that, he huffed and I could hear him moving around. “How do you not know if it’s a date when you ended up spending at least twenty-four hours with the guy?”

So now it was my turn to sigh and sound dramatic…that was usually Archer’s job.

I was just slightly frustrated I didn’t have a better answer. “Well, we hit it off and he asked me if I wanted to go out for a drink or something.”

I tried to keep it vague since I wasn’t sure how to describe it, but Archer jumped right in again. “Nope. Stop right there. Was it a come hang out and I’ll be nice to the new guy kind of thing or something more?”
