“It’s scary for sure.” He finishes the thought for me. Putting his fork down in the middle of his dish, he walks over to the sink to rinse his plate and put it in the dishwasher. “But I think it’s time.” He turns to look at me. “If I don’t do it, then I’ll just think about the what-ifs, and that will kill me.” He was never good at not having a plan. “I’m going to have a lot to think about on this vacation.”

“So no surfing and sailing for you?” I ask, knowing he was most looking forward to that.

“Oh, definitely surfing and sailing. Just more talks with the OGs for their opinions.” He shrugs. “I want to hear what they have to say. Some of them have been in my shoes before.”

“Well, you know one thing for sure,” I say, and he rolls his eyes. “I’m sure they have all the advice to give.”

“Great,” he says sarcastically. “All I need to hear for two weeks is back in my time …” I can’t help but laugh because they all say this. “Like they grew up in the war with one shoe.”

“What about when I was your age.” I remind him of the other thing they tell us.

“Ugh, don’t remind me.” He shakes his head and then rubs his face. “You remember the first time we stayed on the beach all night long?” He looks at me, and I smile.

“How could I forget? All I heard all night long was Michael dry heaving.” I close my eyes. “I told you idiots not to finish the whole bottle of tequila.” He can’t help but laugh.

“We used to always bitch about the vacation,” he says. “And now it’s the one thing I look forward to the most.”

“Well, Julia told me today she’s staying with Michael and Jillian.” I get up and walk to the door to let Mac in. “I’m going to end up staying with my parents.”

“Nah,” he says. “You can stay with me. I’m going solo. My suite has two bedrooms.”

My mouth gets dry when he says that. “Um …” I try to think of ways to tell him no. “Have you packed?”

“I have to unpack the bags I brought down, but all my summer clothes are in one of them, so I’m going to unpack and pack what I’ll need tomorrow,” he says, and I yawn.

“I’m going to go up and start.” I tap my finger on the counter nervously, “I’m exhausted.”

I push the chair back in, afraid to look at him. “Your date wear you out?” he asks, and something about his tone gives me shivers.

I put on my best poker face, then look at him. “Something like that.” I smirk. “I also need a shower.” I turn and walk toward the stairs, grabbing the bags I put down there when I walked in and my shoes.

“See you tomorrow,” I say over my shoulder, and I can feel him staring at me. Walking into my room for the second night, I close my door behind me. Hoping that with the door closed, my heart won’t yearn for him, except this isn’t how it works. In fact, it’s almost the complete opposite because all I want to do is go back downstairs to him. “Forget it,” I mumble to myself, trying to somehow convince my brain that it’s a bad idea. “It’ll never happen.” The words come out, hurting me more than I ever thought they would.

Chapter 9

Dylan

“What’s up your ass?” my uncle Matthew asks me when he drives us back to the clubhouse. I look over at him. “You’ve been pissy since I picked you up this morning.” He picked me up at seven this morning. My alarm went off at six thirty, and when I walked out of my room, I was expecting her door to be open, but it was closed, which pissed me off so much more than I thought it would. And started my whole mood for the day. My golf game was shit—not that it was good to begin with—but it was worse than it’s ever been. I literally just wanted to get this over with. I tried to get into it and enjoy it, but every single time I put the tee down, I thought about her being out on a date. Last night after she left me in the kitchen, I watched her walk up the stairs, never turning back. My eyes fixated on her ass, and I turned around so fucking quickly, afraid she would catch me checking her out. But instead, she shut the door. It was as if she was shutting me out, and I fucking hated it. I tossed and turned all night, thinking about her dating and wondering why the fuck she didn’t tell me.

I shrug. “I’m just tired, I guess.” I swallow and avoid his eyes in case he can tell that I’m lying through my teeth. Pulling the baseball cap lower down to block my eyes.
