“I get it. Speaking of, how’s your sister doing? She still pissed at her boss?” I give him a look of complete bewilderment, having no idea that Eli talks to my sister. I sure as shit have no idea what he’s talking about in regard to her boss.

“I talked to her this morning. She’ll be here in a couple of weeks for Leigh’s birthday. I’ve got no idea on the boss front. You wanna tell me what’s going on?” I cross my arms over my chest, trying to gauge what he knows that I don’t.

“Ophelia was here the last time she was in town, working on that nightmare of an office you’ve been dealing with ever since Sophie was fired for fucking up ordering parts, processing invoices, and all that other bullshit. We got to talking, and she mentioned her boss was a grade A dick, saying she was stuck in California for at least a little while longer because of some contract.” Eli shrugs his shoulders. I lighten my stance. I’m not saying he’s not a good guy. It’s that his taste in women fucking sucks; at least it has in the past, even before his marriage to Lindsay. None of them were with Eli for Eli, after the money and the notoriety he had around town with the local motorcycle club.

“Son of a bitch. She hasn’t said a word. I wonder if she told Rosaleigh. I’ll have to ask her. If she’s that miserable, surely there’s a way out of the contract. As far as work, I’d hire her or Leigh in a minute. Fucking stubborn women won’t hear any of that. I only get my sister in here when I play the I’m-screwed card, and in two weeks, when she’s here, sees the state of the office, it’ll be my balls she busts.” There’s a mountain of paperwork, more invoices than I know what to do with, calls I need to field and return. I need a new administrative assistant. The problem with that is, in our small town, there’s no one I’m willing to bring on board after Sophie managed to mess up my whole computer system as well as everything else.

“You could see if Rory and Emmy want some spare money. They’re smarter than Sophie ever was, and they could at least get the filing done and loaded into the new system,” Eli suggests.

“That’s not a bad idea. I’ll have to run it by Leigh then see if the girls would be up for it.” Rory would definitely want a job, considering the girl loves to shop, goes through more tubes of mascara than I ever thought humanly possible, and the only reason I know that little fact is while I’m giving her a ride to school, her eyes are glued to the visor mirror, coating on more shit than Fif ever did. I’m sure that’s changed, and I know without a doubt where Rory got that from. Hell, last week, I was cleaning out my truck and found a handful of lip glosses and mascara tubes, all from Rory. How Leigh keeps up with her habit, I’ve got not one single clue.

“I’m more than a grease monkey.” Eli taps his temple, leaving grease in its wake.

“Sure. You good to lock up? I’m done for the day,” I ask him, ready to get home, grab a quick shower, and walk the few short steps it takes across the street to get to my girls.

“Yep, I won’t be much longer. This Honda has about had all it’s going to get. It’s leaking radiator fluid like a stuck pig. So much for the man getting another couple of years out of it. Only so much a weld job will hold.” Huh, didn’t think it was that bad. Shows you what I know when I’m stuck in the fucking office unless I’ve got a customer who requests me by name. I went along with the Honda owner as he talked, looked under the hood, and it seemed alright to me. Eli knows his shit, though, and wouldn’t fuck around a customer.

“I’ll give him a call tomorrow if you want, deal with the fallout that might happen. Tell him what’s going on and what his options are. He may get a few months out of it, but I don’t want him sinking a pile of money into a pile of shit either.”

“Sounds good. You talk to Ophelia, keep my name out of it. Something tells me she’s got claws sharper than Lindsay, only in a different way.” I nod. No fucking way am I getting into that or dealing with my sister potentially banging my employee. There are some things a brother does not want to fucking know, and that’s one of them.

“Later.” I’m already walking back to my office. The work can wait for another day. I’ve got more important people to surround myself with.
