“A virgin…” I mutter to myself as I glare up at the ceiling.

Under different circumstances, I’d be ecstatic, just as Becca thought I’d be. The only man to ever be inside her? Christ, to be that lucky. But when I thought about the fact that she was that inexperienced, and that it had been Jerry, my best bud from way back, who’d been looking out for her and keeping all the scumbag guys away from her for all this time, it was like a bucket of ice water to the face.

The reality of the situation set in, and I no longer had my hands on the sexiest female I’d ever seen in my life; I had my hands all over Jerry’s daughter. It’s times like that when I sure wish I didn’t have a conscience.

Now I’ve no doubt hurt her feelings, but this is the right thing to do. I made a promise to Jerry, and I intend to keep it. I just have to find some way to explain that to Becca so she’ll understand.

I can do that, right?

With a deep breath, I open the door and head into the kitchen, half expecting to find Becca already eating breakfast without me. To my surprise, I don’t find her there at all. She’s not on the couch either. I go to her bedroom and knock, thinking maybe she’s still in there, but there’s no answer. Starting to worry, I go back to the kitchen and pull out my phone to call her when I see a scrap of torn out notebook paper on the counter. On it is a note that reads:

* * *

Gone to hang out with Trevor. Back later. -Becca

* * *

“What the fuck!?” I blurt out, wadding the note up in my fist as a surge of anger swells within me like a volcano ready to erupt. “Trevor!?”

She’s baiting me. She has to be. There’s absolutely no way she’d go hang out with that scummy son of a bitch on her own. This is punishment for what I did last night, but there’s no way I’m going to let her spend a second more with him. I pick up my phone and call her number.

To my surprise, I hear the sound of ringing from Becca’s bedroom. I open the door to find her phone lying on her perfectly made bed, my name on the Caller ID there as if to taunt me. She’s had my number in her phone this whole time. Jerry must have given it to her.

“Fuck,” I growl, ending the call.

How far is she going to take this? Visions of her returning to the trailer tonight and telling me about how she lost her virginity to Trevor fill my mind. I can practically feel my blood pressure rise as my fists curl into clenched balls at my sides.

Would she take it there to get back at me? It’s hard to believe, but I just can’t risk it. Young girls are impulsive, and if she’s really pissed at me, she might just go and do something impulsively stupid like sleeping with that idiot just to get back at me for not taking her when I had my chance.

“Fuck!” Snarling, I snag my coat off the hook, grab my keys, and head outside. I try to block those foul thoughts from my mind as I kick my bike’s engine to life and roar away from the trailer. It doesn’t take long asking around to get Trevor’s address. He’s a few streets over, but when I pull up and knock, it’s not him who comes to the door, it’s a blonde in a nightgown smoking a cigarette.

“Yes?” she asks. “May I help you?”

I can’t tell if she’s drunk or coming onto me.

“I’m looking for Trevor,” I tell her.

“Well, he ain’t here,” she replies with a smile. “But you can come on in and wait for him if you’d like.”

“Thanks, but I’m fine—”

“You sure are,” she replies with a wink. Okay, definitely coming onto me.

“You have any idea where your son might be?” I ask.

“What are you, a cop?”

“Do I look like a cop?” I ask.

She shrugs and laughs. “Huntin’. Fishin’. Bowlin’ maybe. Down at the river with that Carla girl—”

“The river?”

“Yeah, he’d always take her down by the bridge,” she replies. “That’s my son’s idea of a romantic getaway—”

“Thank you,” I interrupt, turning away and hopping back on my bike. I can hear her calling something after me as I speed away, but I just ignore it. Easy to see where Trevor got his “charm” from.

I speed out of the trailer park and down the hill toward the river. It doesn’t take long to reach the bridge. I see a set of old bicycles leaning up by the railing and pull up beside them and park. As I shut off the engine, I hear the unmistakable sound of Becca’s voice from below and quickly hurry down the slope to find her and Trevor seated uncomfortably close to each other, dangling their feet in the water. They both turn and look as I come around the corner of the embankment.
