Luckily, I’d maintained a shred of sanity and remembered the reason I’d brought Jules to the very spot we were sitting in now. I was glad I’d managed it because watching his reactions to what he was seeing was worth the hard-on that would likely leave permanent zipper marks imprinted on my dick.

Jules gasped and then removed the binoculars so he could shoot me a look of disbelief. I wasn’t surprised when he quickly snapped his head back around and began searching out his quarry through the lenses.

“Five,” he said in a hushed voice. “Five babies.”

“Pups,” I responded.

I was rewarded with a soft slap to my ribs. I chuckled. “Okay, I’ll postpone the ‘how to talk western style’ lesson. The father is the black one and the mother is the white one.”

“I thought wolves were gray or brown.”

“Timber wolves usually are but every once in a while, you’ll see a black or white one. I’ve never seen a black and white alpha pair before.”

Jules kept his voice low but there was no missing the wonderment he was experiencing. I knew the feeling well, but today it wasn’t because of the wolves. I could still smell the perfume on him. Between his soft, smooth skin and the mixture of his natural scent and the perfume, I couldn’t stop touching him. Jules might have thought I was whispering into his ear as I talked about the wolves, but the gorgeous creatures had absolutely nothing to do with it.

“Is it just them or are there more wolves? I thought they moved in packs.”

“They do. The alpha pair are the male and female leaders and they’re usually the only ones who mate in the pack. The rest of the wolves are scattered around that ridge. They tend to sleep during the day. The pack protects the alphas and their pups.”

Jules jerked his head around, smacking me in the chin. “Are we safe? I mean, can’t they smell us or something, even from that far away?”

“We’re safe. We’re downwind of them. BJ will let us know if any of them are nearby. I have this”—I lifted the rifle slightly—“just in case.”

“You don’t shoot them, do you? Like hunt them?”

Seconds earlier he’d been concerned for our safety, but now Jules was looking at me accusingly. I couldn’t help but brush a soft kiss over his frowning lips.

“No. Even though timber wolves are no longer a protected species, Curtis doesn’t allow hunting them on his land and since he owns most of it up here, they’re safe. One of my jobs is to make sure none of them get too close to the ranch, so I monitor their hunting patterns. There’s enough wild game in this area that they’ve got no reason to go after any of the livestock on the ranch. Since humans are pretty much their only predator, they avoid them at all costs.”

Jules nodded in approval. Instead of turning back around, though, his eyes dropped to my lips. My entire body instantly reacted.

To a mere look.

I could feel Jules trembling. Since he was wearing my coat, I doubted he was cold.

With his eyes still on my mouth, Jules asked, “Is it true wolves mate for life?”

My heart began pounding and my lungs felt constricted. “Yes,” I said softly. I knew we were already past the point of no return. I had to taste him again. I had to have him.

“Flynn,” Jules whispered, his need clear as day.

Him saying my name was all the permission I needed. I seized Jules’s mouth. It was a rough, demanding kiss that left no question as to what I wanted. Jules returned the kiss with just as much need. I managed to grab the binoculars from his hand and tossed them aside. Jules was already climbing onto my lap, but that wasn’t where I wanted… no, needed him to be. With one arm around his waist, I lifted him enough to maneuver him onto his back. Along with the blanket, my jacket provided Jules an additional layer of protection from the hard ground, so I kept him pressed against me the entire time.

Neither of us had broken the kiss in the process.

Jules was wearing a green Henley, so it was easy to push it up enough to expose his flat stomach. I moved down his body so I could explore his skin with my tongue. The whimpers that fell from Jules’s mouth as he threaded his fingers through my hair were proof that he needed the same thing I did. I used one arm to cradle his upper body and the other to slip between us.

“Yes,” Jules bit out when I palmed his erection through his jeans.

I returned my mouth to his and between harsh breaths said, “I wanted to take you like this in your room.” I kissed him hard before lifting my head so I could look him in the eyes. I had to stop stroking his dick to get his attention. Before he could say anything, I added, “You’re so beautiful, Jules. Here like this and like you were in your room this morning. Promise me… promise me you’ll let me take you when you’re dressed like that. Only silk and lace between us.”
