She eagerly helped Kent spread the blanket. She took a beer from him, which he had taken from the cooler, and couldn’t help kissing him. “Any time you want me to take a day off, I’m in.”
Hearing the crowd draw silent, she looked toward the stage, and her hand went to grip his arm. “You brought me to a symphony.” Awestruck at the sweet gesture, she had to blink back tears of happiness. She wasn’t crying, but she came close.
Guilt hit her at how much she was enjoying herself, while Glory wasn’t even able to enjoy going out to a restaurant anymore.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” She hadn’t told Kent that much about Glory; she wanted to wait until she felt the time was right.
“Do you still want to argue with me for giving you two presents in one night?” he teased.
Shaking herself her dejected thoughts about her sister off, she stared at his pleased boyish expression. Her bottom lip trembled. “No. How could I? Can you do me a favor?” The orchestra began playing, yet Sage couldn’t pull her eyes away from Kent.
“Sure. What do you need?”
Haunting notes filled the air. She recognized they were playing Swan Lake immediately.
“Whatever happens to us in the future, I need you to remember something.”
“What do you want me to remember?” His eyes grew as haunted as the music.
“I loved you first.”
THIRTY-THREE
“Iwon’t be able to share lunch with you today,” he told Sage as she stepped out of his SUV. Pressing on his key fob, he locked the car door as they walked toward the elevator. At the same time, he switched off his emotional switch. “I have a busy day ahead. I’m sorry I won’t be able have lunch with you. I have court at two as well, so I won’t be able to give you a ride home, either.”
“That’s okay. The bus is easy to catch.”
He glanced at Sage as he pressed the button for her floor. Her happiness was unmistakable after their trip. Her emotions were an open book.
Clenching his jaw, he switched his gaze to the elevator panel, watching the floor levels light up one by one.
When her floor lit up, she turned toward him. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Steeling himself for the loving glance as she stepped out the elevator, he pressed the button to close the door. “Bye.” Detached, he didn’t watch her walk away.
He got off the elevator on his floor and greeted his assistant before heading to his office.
He worked through the morning, checking his cell phone every hour for the text he was expecting. At ten, the text he was waiting for popped up on his cell phone.
Be there at twelve.
Calling his assistant, he gave her two files that needed to be returned to the file room.
“You can take your lunch at eleven thirty. Would you mind driving to the Casino Hotel? I left my briefcase on the table by the door. You don’t have to cut your lunch short, and I’ll pay you extra for the inconvenience.”
“No problem. I don’t mind.”
Handing Mrs. Boward his room key and a hundred-dollar bill, he thanked her before returning to work.
With that nuisance taken care of, he answered the multiple emails that had piled up over his long weekend.
When the clock on his computer told him it was eleven thirty, he exited the file he was updating and went to his private bathroom. After releasing the two black coffees he’d had, he washed his hands then swished mouthwash and spat it out in the sink. Unemotionally, he stared at himself in the mirror as he ran a comb through his hair.
He had just sat his ass down when Livvy came in without knocking.
“Lock the door,” he ordered when she started walking toward him.
Pivoting on her high heels, she went back to the door then moved across the floor toward him.
“I missed you.” Uninhibitedly dropping down onto his lap, she licked his lips before sliding her tongue inside his mouth.
“God, I’ve missed how you taste,” she purred. “Garrett tastes like a garbage disposal.” Her fingers began familiarly untying his necktie. “He eats onions for every meal. The only reason I can keep from barfing in his face is because he promised me the keys to my brand-new townhome tomorrow.”
Kent caressed her thigh as she notched her ass over his dick. “Did you bring what I wanted you to get for me?”
Sliding his necktie free, she swung it around her neck. “Have I ever disappointed you?” she cooed, licking the hollow of his neck. “Hot stuff, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you,” she murmured sultrily. “I brought the flash drive, too. I’m such a good girl, aren’t I?”
His hand went to her inner thigh, pinching the soft flesh until he heard her give the moan of sexual desire he was waiting for.
