I burst out laughing, pushing myself deeper into her as I did.

“We need to get cleaned up,” I said as I reluctantly pulled out of her, my cock raging all over again. Especially when I saw my shaft covered in our combined juices. “My parents could be here any second.”

She winced and cupped herself. “This is going to make a mess.”

Instead of her trying to sit up on the couch and then stand, I caught her around the waist and carried her bridal style into my bathroom before setting her down on the ground on the towel she’d used earlier.

“You didn’t wash your hair,” I said as I put her down.

“I was worried about you having to tell your parents that,” she said. “I didn’t want to take too long in here.”

I twisted, bent, and turned the shower on for her. “Take your time, honey. I’ll entertain them until you’re done.”

Right on cue, my doorbell rang, announcing my parents’ arrival.

She sighed, leaned into me, and pressed a kiss in the middle of my chest before pushing away and ripping my shirt over her shoulders.

I watched her sweet ass move into the shower and then watched even longer as her hair went from dry to fully wet.

I watched so long that my doorbell rang again.

“Better go,” she called over my shoulder. “Or you’ll have to explain what took you so long.”

Turns out, I had to explain that anyway.

CHAPTER 17

To say that I thought I’d ever be in this situation again would be crazy.

Yet, there I was, sitting at Bain’s dining room table with his parents, eating breakfast like I used to do with Braxton. Except, that was the only enjoyment I got when I was with Braxton.

That’d been the one single thing that’d been a downfall about calling it quits with Braxton. Losing them.

And now, I had them back.

It was glorious.

“Do you want more pancakes, Diana?” Hilary asked.

“No.” I patted my belly. “If I eat any more, I’m going to be straining the button of these jeans.”

Even as I said that, I watched the last few bites of pancake go untouched on Bain’s plate. The serial killer psycho.

He had all but five bites gone. Those five bites were in the middle of the pancake. The bites that were smothered in gooey, buttery, syrupy goodness.

I gave Bain a worried look.

“Why do you keep looking at me like that?” Bain asked with a hint of humor in his voice.

“I just don’t understand what’s wrong with you,” I explained. “Those are the best bites of the pancakes. I mean, literally, those are the bites that most people fight over. If you were going to not finish any part of the pancakes, it should be the outsides. Not the insides.”

“I’m just not hungry anymore,” he explained. “I literally can’t eat another single bite.”

“Then you should’ve stopped eating at the edges and finished the center.” I was still so appalled. What kind of person didn’t eat the center?

I was seriously rethinking our relationship. There had to be something wrong with him.

“If you want it, eat it,” he suggested.

I wanted it.

I really, really wanted it.

The only problem was, I was full. I shouldn’t have had pancakes in the first place—because Jesus, was it hard to fit into my pants lately—and I didn’t want to look like a fat ass in front of him.

“You know you want it,” he teased.

I did want it.

“I can’t,” I sighed. “I have to fit into my jeans. I already shouldn’t have had the pancakes that I did.”

He frowned at me. “What are you talking about?”

I patted my belly. “My ass can’t handle anymore. Or the seat of my jeans. My scrubs are already getting too tight, and those things are expensive.”

“I’ll buy you some stretchy ones,” he offered. “Because you don’t look like you’re full yet.”

I rolled my eyes.

“When I first met Braxton, he offered to buy me some smaller jeans as an incentive to help me lose weight. You’re offering the complete opposite.” I eyed him. “I feel like y’all aren’t even of the same loins.” I looked at his parents. “No offense.”

Hilary winced. “I still can’t believe he hired a hit man to kill you.”

“I didn’t.”

I whipped around to find Braxton at the front door standing with Sunny, who we’d been expecting. Hence the door being wide open for him since he said he was five minutes away.

Bain crossed his arms over his chest and said, “Then explain to us what’s going on so we can figure out why a hit man tried to kill her tonight. And your name was the name that came out of his mouth.”

Braxton’s mouth pursed, and I reached for the plate of pancakes that Bain had left behind.

I cut into them and took a bite before I’d even realized I was doing it.
