She had such a way with words.

She was also hitting a bit too close to my very shameful home.

“I didn’t say you could write my biography,” I grumbled. “You might as well ask me to ghost-write the fucking scene.”

Ellie stilled, then tossed her phone beside her and squealed. “Fred! Tell me everything!”

“I’ve already told you far too much.”

“Oh, no.” Max strolled into the library and glanced between us. “Did she get you again?”

I nodded, sighing. “When doesn’t she?”

He turned to his girlfriend. “Did you at least get something good this time?”

Ellie got onto her knees, using the arm of the sofa to lean towards him, and grinned up at him. “The best!”

“Good.” Max kissed her before pulling off his tie. “What did she extort out of you today?”

“Deli likes the toy I got her, and he listens to her use it!”

“That’s not what I said.” What a way to make me sound like a fucking pervert. “Ellie, save the exaggerations for your manuscript.”

She pouted and sat back on the sofa, and Max smiled at her before turning to me. “So… Adjoining rooms is working out well for you,” he said.

“Fucking fabulously.” My tone held more than a little snark, and he chuckled at it. “Don’t laugh, you dick. You’re part of the reason I have to live through this hell.”

“Blame the girls. We had no say in it.”

“Liar. You all chose the best lube and most comfortable condoms,” Ellie interjected.

Max cleared his throat. “You were supposed to keep that to yourself.”

She shrugged. “I’m not taking all the blame for it. Unless they like it—then we girls will take full credit.”

“Of course, you will.”

“Guys.” I sighed.

“Sorry, sorry.” Ellie nibbled on her thumbnail. “I didn’t think Deli would… Well, no, actually. I’m not surprised at all that Deli is using that toy. I just thought she might be a bit more… discreet.”

“Clearly you don’t know her very well if you think the word ‘discreet’ is in her repertoire. She probably can’t even spell it,” I replied. “Outrageous is more her thing.”

“Can she spell that?” Max asked cheekily.

I shook my head. “Backwards in three languages.”

Ellie laughed and got up. “Well, I know when I need to make myself scarce.”

“You mean listen outside the door.”

She met my gaze. “Noooo. I didn’t mean that at all.”

“Ellie.” Max fought back a smile when she looked at him. “Give him this one, all right?”

“Okay, but I want the cliff notes later.”

“You’ve already gotten the inspiration,” I reminded her. “Go and do your job. Your editor will thank me.”

She pouted, but she sighed and ultimately nodded. “You’re right, you’re right. Phew.” She turned around and headed for the door. “Gonna have to change the hero’s hair colour,” she muttered on her way out. “Or this is gonna be awkward.”

I frowned after her, but Max simply laughed and shook his head.

“I don’t know why you’re laughing. Your girlfriend is using me for her sexy scenes,” I said.

Max shrugged. “If you think that’s weird, you should see her working while watching a porno.”

“What?”

“It helps visualise where the body parts go, apparently.” He pressed his lips together. “She pauses, zooms in, and even angles her head like it’ll give her a different viewpoint. I just smile and nod and leave her to it.”

That was probably for the best.

“Anyway, I knew there was more to your trip up here than just work. It’s tough at home, huh?”

I stared at the door for a moment, then rested my arms on my thighs and looked at Max. “Deli’s attractive, right?”

“Are you trying to get me in trouble with Ellie?”

“Just answer the question.”

“Yes, she is. Hold on.” He got up, walked over to the bar cart, and poured two drinks. He set one in front of me before sitting back down with his, then nodded. “Okay, continue. Where are we going with this?”

“Just hear me out.” I picked up my glass and sipped. “I’m not blind, all right? I’ve always known she was beautiful, but she’s… Attractive.”

“That is what I just said.”

“Really attractive.”

Max blinked at me. “Generally speaking, I think most people would look at her and think that, yes.”

“She’s hot as fuck!” Ellie shouted from the other side of the door. “I’d bang her, and I’m a woman!”

“You’re supposed to be writing!” Max called, smirking knowingly. “If you don’t hit your target, you won’t get that thing you want!”

“Shit!” The sound of footsteps disappearing was the next thing we heard.

I wasn’t going to ask. I didn’t want to know.

“There you have it,” he said, settling back into the armchair again. “She’s so hot even my girlfriend would fuck her.”

“Good to know,” I replied dryly. “So, I’m not going crazy.”

“Are you going crazy because you think your conventionally attractive best friend who is now your wife is getting you hard on a regular basis? No. In fact, I’d think you were crazy if you weren’t in this situation.” He sipped his drink. “The question is: what are you going to do about it?”
