He charges at the polar bear and slams his shoulder into him with a roar. Grayson’s bear stumbles back as Ryker’s Kodiak sprints through the fountain—spraying water everywhere—and leaps on top of the grizzly. He tackles him to the ground and both bears wrestle it out as Jackson curses and yanks off his shirt.

“I gotta help them,” he shouts to me. “Get ready with the sword.”

I sneak around the edge of the fountain as Jackson releases his grizzly. He bursts out of our team leader and runs over to join the fight.

Normally, three bears against one would be no contest, but there’s something different about feral bears. Their adrenaline is jacked to insane levels and the fury whipping through their veins seems to make them feel no pain.

The feral grizzly throws Ryker off and lunges on Jackson. I wince when I see his teeth sink into poor Jackson’s furry shoulder.

“Dats enough of dis,” I say as I stand up and stretch my neck from side to side. It’s a hell of a fight to watch, but this place is going to be swarming with police or swat or military soon and I don’t want my friends caught in the crossfire. We did that once and it was not fun. It’s best to end this quickly and we can be on our merry way.

I’m slicing my sword through the air as I walk over when an unusual scent hits my nose. It staggers me as it burns its way down into my lungs. It’s a sweet pain. I’ve never smelled anything like it, yet it feels so familiar.

Ryker’s Kodiak flies through the air and crashes into the fountain, spraying a tidal wave beside me. I leap out of the way of the water as I look around with my heart hammering in my chest.

That scent… I need more of it.

The clock strikes the hour and a huge witch bursts out of the top of the haunted house with a loud cackle. The feral bear snarls viciously as he turns to it.

Jackson’s grizzly and Grayson’s polar bear are both limping. Ryker’s Kodiak is soaked. He’s taking deep breaths as he climbs out of the fountain. Meanwhile, the feral bear looks fresh and ready for more.

The giant witch cackles again before sliding back into the wall. The feral grizzly lets out a deafening roar and then charges toward it.

My three bears are looking exhausted and beaten up as they watch with their big furry shoulders slumped down.

“I got dis, boys,” I say as I sprint after the crazed bear.

He explodes through the cheap doors that lead into the haunted house and disappears inside.

This is perfect. I’ll just sneak up on the beast, turn the corner, and shove my sword into his neck. Easy peasy.

I slip through the broken doors, moving as quietly as I can. I’m on edge as I walk through the dark corridors. Not so much from the bear, but from that scent. It’s still tingling in my lungs.

What the hell could it be?

A skeleton leaps out of the darkness with a haunting squeal and I slice its head off with a high-pitched scream. I’m glad the boys weren’t here to see that. They would never let me live it down.

The feral monster is rampaging through the haunted house, attacking all of the decorations that are trying to scare him. This place is going to be a shredded mess once he’s done with it.

It’s time to put an end to this nonsense.

I sneak through the corridors, stepping over the mangled wizard that the bear ripped to pieces. I grip my sword as I get closer to the roaring.

He’s around the corner. I peek around it and shake my head when I see him assaulting an animatronic werewolf. At least, it’s keeping him busy.

I tiptoe over, approaching the feral beast from behind.

My plan is to walk up beside him and thrust my sword into his neck before he even knows I’m here.

But then, she steps out.

And everything changes.

Time stops. My heart stops. My feet stop.

It’s her.

It’s my mate.

And she’s about to be mauled by a feral bear.

Chapter Three

Remy

I grab my mate’s arm and yank her behind me as I raise my sword to slaughter this nasty beast.

“No!” she screams as she wraps her arm around my neck and desperately tries to pull me back.

“Ma Chère,” I say as I peel her arm off. “It has to be done!”

We have the bear’s attention now. He turns around with a livid gnash of his teeth.

“He’s my brother!” she screams in horror. “Don’t hurt him!”

“Your brother…?” I whisper in confusion. This mad creature is this goddess’s brother?

I glance at her face and my heart squeezes into a tight little ball. She’s so beautiful. I want to freeze time and spend the next couple of hours studying every gorgeous inch of her.
