In the last two minutes, I’d gone from pissed off to frustrated to holding my breath. But at that, my mouth split into a grin.

“Oh God, did you let him in?”

“Absolutely not. Though he’s refusing to leave, so we might have to call the cops.”

She peered up at me, all beauty and innocence. “But we don’t trust the cops?”

Overalls, attitude, and following my rules? Fuck me. Was she trying to seduce me?

I cleared my throat. “No. But I think they can handle a trespasser.”

“Not if it’s Sebastian He’ll cause a huge scene and end up getting arrested. Then his mug shot will get leaked, and the entire world will assume we’re back together.”

I shrugged. “I can kill him.”

She barked a laugh. “We do have a backhoe that would make digging an unmarked grave a breeze.”

“Say the word and I’ll have Apollo cut the cameras.”

She beamed up at me. “Tempting, but maybe I should just talk to him instead. See if I can get rid of him.”

“We told him you weren’t here. You think he can keep his mouth shut if he finds out you are?”

“Well, he certainly kept his mouth shut about me when we were married and he slept his way through the cast of his last three movies.”

“No shit?”

She cut her gaze to the side and confirmed, “No shit.”

The muscle in my neck strained. I already didn’t like the asshole on preconceived notions alone. But it took a special piece of shit to have a woman like Lofton—her ring on your finger—as you took another woman. “Right, so I guess we’re back to me killing him.”

She laughed, but it was short lived. When her eyes came back to mine, that damn shame from our first night had returned. “Can you drive me down to the gate? He’s never been here, and I’d really like to keep it that way. He’d have all kinds of judgments if he saw this place.”

Oh, this motherfucker.

Rage burned through my veins.

I wanted to tell her no.

I wanted to convince her that that sorry excuse for a man didn’t deserve a single fucking word from her.

But mainly, I wanted to take her into my arms and erase that shame from her face permanently.

And for that reason alone, I nodded, jogged down the steps, and headed straight to the SUV, desperate to escape her gravitational pull before I did something entirely stupid.

On the short ride, I’d called Chris and had him bring Sebastian through the gate on foot. Lofton didn’t want him up at the house, but I didn’t want her standing on the side of the road, exposed while having what I assumed would not be a light-hearted chat.

When we pulled up, he was standing in the middle of the driveway, looking every bit the douchebag I’d expected.

Brown hair.

Green eyes.

Designer sunglasses sitting on top of his head.

Khaki shorts and a blue button-down, untucked with the sleeves rolled up.

I pretended I didn’t own the same outfit while silently making plans to burn it when I got home.

To his credit, he was in good shape. He had to be in order to carry an entire franchise of CIA Black Ops films. Though he was shorter than I’d expected. But then again, his type always was.

Lofton and I got out of the car at the same time.

The minute he saw her, he smiled, award-winning and white, and then jogged over with his arms open wide. “Lofton, baby.”

I stepped directly into his path, causing him to faceplant into my chest. “That’s close enough.”

With narrowed eyes, he craned his head back. “Who the fuck are you?”

“I’m the one making the calls around here. You wanted to talk to her. Talk. But you touch her and I’ll break every fucking bone in your body.”

Lofton appeared at my side. “Okay. Let’s simmer down. I’m not even sure the backhoe still works, Devon.”

“Only one way to find out,” I replied, my malevolent gaze locked on her ex.

She rested her hand on my arm. “It’s fine. Really. Just give me a minute.”

Reluctantly, I backed away. Far enough to give them the illusion of privacy. Close enough to make good on my threat if need be.

“For fuck’s sake, you hired that Neanderthal to replace Marty?”

I hated the way the mention of his name made her face pale.

I hated even more that this prick was the one who’d said it.

Lofton rebounded quickly. “Why are you here?”

His hooded gaze raked over her body, his mouth twisting into a smirk. “Nice overalls, Lo-Lo.”

He called her Lo-Lo? I should have taken out his knees for that alone.

Lofton didn’t miss a beat. “It’s a farm, you dick. What the hell am I supposed to muck stalls in? Prada?”

“Jesus, chill. I was joking.”

“Don’t tell me to chill like I’m being dramatic. I haven’t seen you in two damn years and you decided to show up today?”
