“Knives,” Killian yells. “It’s the knives in my stomach, I’m not okay, are you okay? Don’t look back, don’t look back!”

“This is exactly how Jack died on the Titanic, Killian, he couldn’t hold on!”

“But he TRIED!” Killian yells his voice cracking at the end. “He tried!”

Killian disappears behind a tree and small hill and I nearly faceplant into a hole by a small rock in the desert before figuring out what I’m going to do with my life.

Really, I just want to know what happened? How did we get here? We got along so well and then he just left me.

“Stay,” I whispered. “Stay the night.”

How was even his swallow sexy? The way he slowly leaned down and pressed a kiss to the corner of my mouth. He smelled like every expensive cologne commercial I’ve ever experienced. Killian pressed his body against mine, smelling like wine and a future.

“I don’t know if I should,” he whispered. “We barely know each other.”

“We know enough,” I said. “I know you like turtles, I know you make your bed every day, which is adorable, I know you sometimes drink hot chocolate at three a.m. and pretend to be this hard core rockstar but would really prefer to be watching Dateline.”

He laughed. “Okay so my obsession with crime, you gotta take that to your grave.”

“Done.”

He pressed another kiss to my cheek. “I think I could fall for you, but I shouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because smart girls like you are dangerous to dumb guys like me. We get confused, in over our heads, we fight, we war, we brave everything just to have one small taste and I think you’re the type I’d want to taste forever.”

I had nothing.

Nothing to say to that other than kissing him, pressing my mouth against his and begging to drown in the words he just said.

He kissed me back—hard, pressed me up against the counter, then lifted me like it was nothing as his tongue dove into my mouth. His body felt primed, ready, muscular, and on top of that, his dick strained against his jeans, hot, needy. I’d never experienced something like that before, and then he just stopped.

He jerked away.

His eyes were wide, his expression foreign. “I gotta go.”

“Wait, what?” My lips were still bruised, my ego even more so. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, no, um I just forgot and…” He did a little spin, and then he was gone. I still had his number, but he left, just like that.

And there I was, left on the counter, sitting, just like that.

Waiting for him to change his mind.

To come back.

To tell me that he was just having a moment.

The car started.

And then he was just. Gone.

I finally find a place to use as a restroom and am so thankful I have Kleenex and wipes and not nature at my service. It’s suddenly not as bad as I thought, I’m not sure what Killian is going through, but I hope it’s hell.

He abandoned me.

And tried to steal my food!

And then suffered for stealing it, but whatever.

I walk back to the limo and get in.

Killian gets in about a minute later.

We don’t make eye contact.

“So.” Dustin clears his throat. “Maybe we don’t eat gas station burritos anymore, yeah?”

Killian groans and closes his eyes. “We talk about this never.”

“Hey, you’re still sexy.” Dustin hits him on the stomach. Killian groans and looks ready to puke.

I hide my laugh, then groan myself when it hurts to make a noise.

“So uh, why do you guys hate each other?” Dustin asks. “I mean I can read a room, and this one…” He makes a face. “More toxic than that burrito.”

“He kissed me,” I blurt. “And then left me as if it wasn’t the best kiss of his life and mine. Just left without a word.”

Killian is quick to respond. “She reminded me of someone I once knew, of someone who changed my life only to leave me.”

I frown. “What?”

“Eighth grade, I did two semesters in the states. She was my first kiss. She had butterfly earrings and—”

“Always wore a bow in her hair?” I finish, ready to pass out.

“Her name was Letty.”

A tear streams down my cheek. “Were you going by the name Len?”

He jumps forward out of his seat. “How do you know that?”

I hold out my hand. “Nice to see you again, Len. My nickname was Letty.”

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Killian

I’m too stunned to grab her hand. How did I not see it? And what are the odds? Damn it that’s why I’ve been so obsessed with her hands, they were familiar, pretty, small.

I gently take her hand in mine and narrow my eyes. “But your name’s Scarlett.”

She drops my hand. “I know my name. Once I hit sixteen, I wanted to sound more the adult I thought I was, so I told my parents to start calling me by my full name, then that eventually turned into Scar, which was a horrible choice since boys can be cruel and would chase me around singing the song from Lion King. One boy used to hiss at me.” She crosses her arms.
