However, it wasn’t all physical. Dr. Finch helped restore long-dormant sentiments, unlocked the key to my heart, and released my mom. After the first night, I slept like a baby. Not a toss, nor a turn. Not a friggen peep.

When Victor encouraged me to talk about Momma, it freed my memories of her, of feeling her love. Like when I was called polka-dot face in elementary school, and Momma’s fingers moved silkily across my tears.

Kissing them away, Momma would say, “My dearest Lux, I wish you courage in the face of all your ugly ass adversaries. Wisdom to pick your battles. Adventure on this journey we call life.”

I’d laugh through the tears while mentioning her cussing since she always reprimanded Dad. Now, I’ve met adventure, and his name’s Victor. My body was transported to heaven and back all weekend. But he’s still wrapped in mystery and intrigue.

Is it wise to lose myself? Feel so totally consumed during sex by someone who I know nothing about? For the past three days, my mind has been inundated with the way his dick made my body hum. I sort of had this dread at the pit of my stomach the entire time. That all we had was one weekend, and I’d never see him again.

I’ve turned my closet upside down, only to find the navy-blue dress that Victor’s assistant, Burt, sent me home with. I hadn’t even noticed the shimmery flecks of gold, which complement my skin. I fluff my hair while the elevator swooshes to a stop at the penthouse level.

As the doors open, I recall the pleasure of Victor’s touch and how ripples of desire poured over my entire body. I burned alive, from the inside out, in passion for the doctor.

Now, my heart sinks as I set eyes on kind-blue eyes instead of the icy-blue ones, which held me under a raging current, consuming a piece of my soul.

That’s not supposed to happen—the tragic emotive shift. Not yet.

Victor’s younger brother must be close to my age. Though slightly taller, he lacks that one subtle crease around his mouth that Victor has. I’ve imagined that maybe the man who’s captured my heart has smiled more in the past.

“Wow, look at you.” Graham welcomes me with such warmth that it leaves no doubt he’s the good brother.

“Thank you.” My eyes search the entire living area for Victor. Again, my heart pitches. Sensing my jumbled nerves, Graham starts in on small talk, which he’s well versed at.

“Where’d the two of you meet?”

“It’s sort of a funny story.” A smile flickers on my face as I attempt to mirror the younger brother’s easygoing demeanor.

But I’m distracted. I hadn’t expected the stars to align, so I’d catch sight of Dr. Victor Finch again. Nor did I expect to breathe his air, taste his lips. Maybe I would view him in passing at Greco Technologies. The verdict is out as to if he would’ve answered my call had Graham not done so.

That makes me sound weak. Addicted.

An idiot to have agreed to tonight when I’m standing before the man who technically invited me.

“Do tell,” Graham coaxes.

I establish the foundation of the story as he pours an oaky, amber liquid into a glass.

“Thank you. Woah, that’ll burn the hair off someone’s chest.” I grin. “I, uh, don’t have hair on my . . .”

“I see. An American saying.”

“More of a down south saying.”

“Ah, I’ll treasure it with my heart.” Graham pours himself a drink. “Eh, a dirt-cheap shot of vodka might’ve fared better for us. This is for the old men like my brother.”

“I agree.” I set the whiskey onto the bar.

“So, you were saying,” Graham smothers his alcohol in pineapple juice. “Vic bumped into you, only to sweep you off your feet?”

“Well, parts of our first encounter were charming.” He bulldozed my life, created ethos and chaos. “Vic has a way of riling . . .”

Air evaporates in my throat. Victor’s presence envelops me. I spin around and see him coasting out of the sanctuary where he made love to my body all weekend long.

The governing force dons another black-on-black suit.

Mysterious.

Deadly.

I don’t know why that thought pops into my mind. I’ve never equated lethal to sexy. Still, my brain runs away with me.

What if he’s not a doctor? He has the demeanor of an undercover operative. May fare better as secret services to her Royal Majesty in England. Stop it, Lux, you’re the lucky, young lady he leads on in every city he passes.

Either way, my thong could nourish a desert as I ponder the idea of the doctor being a spy. Not that I’m saying his intelligence doesn't do anything for me. Nope. Dr. Victor Finch has checked every box on a list of any woman’s desires.

Two hours later, my fatuous cravings have diminished. Seated on a rooftop with gray travertine walls and opulent white chairs, Graham’s introduced us to the Starbucks lady he couldn’t stop talking about. Suyoung’s skinny, but damn, I could throw her. Like I have honestly considered it.
