A double knock on the door startles me, but the doctor says, “Come in.” A large man in a pair of dark gray suit pants and an expensive-looking sweater vest and a matching dress shirt comes in.

“Beast, this is Ms. Cole and her cousin, Bee.” Are they with the mob?

“Hello, ladies. I’m District Attorney William Brandon.” Government officials?

“I can see why they call you Beast,” Bee mutters, craning her head upward to look at him.

“Yes, but it’s because he’s a beast in court, too,” the doctor says.

“Well, let’s get you out of here before that little pussy comes looking for you. First things first. Slip these on.” He gives us some different clothes.

“You got these quickly,” Bee says.

“We came here in a hurry for a family friend who was in an accident. One of the women packed clothes, and these will work. Now, I’m going to walk you out, and Blade is going to walk you out to a second vehicle,” he says the last part pointing to Bee.

“We’re going to be separated?” I ask, panic setting in.

The DA says, “Only until we know we’re not being followed.”

“Okay.” I nod.

They both leave the room so we can get to work on our new look. We changed into a whole different outfit, including a pair of sneakers for me and a pair of flats for Bee. I have a baseball cap on, and Bee’s got her bright red hair up in a beanie. We don’t look like ourselves unless he sees our faces.

Once we’re changed, I knock on the door, and then they step inside the room again. In comes a third man, and he’s as fucking big as the other guy. “Ladies, this is Blade.”

“Holy fuck,” Bee scoffs. “Seriously. We’re supposed to trust you guys?”

He presses the bridge of his nose in annoyance. “Look, I’m tired as fuck right now. Are we ready or not?”

“The baby keeping you up?” Doc asks.

“Let’s just say it’s not the baby keeping me up.” He winks at the doctor. “Jules has been in a mood.” He’s grinning from ear to ear, and I can’t fight my own smile. There’s actually something sweet about the man. I’m not sure what it is, but he’s clearly a happy husband.

“Well, lead the way, so you can get back to where you need to be,” I say.

“You heard the lady,” Beast says. “My wife will be wondering why it’s taking me forever to get home.”

“Don’t go looking around. We’re going through the back entrance where the employees go. Pretend to be focused on me, limiting view of your face from an outward prospective.”

“Okay.”

“Same,” Blade says to Bee. She nods. We follow the instructions or so I believe she does because I’m loaded in the vehicle first and we drive off before they do.

We’re on the road for five minutes before the dashboard lights up with a call from Mary. “Hey, beautiful. How are you feeling?”

“I’m wonderful. I was just checking on Asher,” she says.

“I don’t have any details, sweetheart, but I have something to talk to you about when I get home. We have some guests staying with us for the night,” he says, but there’s a wariness in his voice like he’s concerned. He didn’t sound concerned earlier.

“Oh yeah? Okay. Who?”

“Um…”

“William Brandon… what’s going on?” Oh shit. Full names. He’s in trouble.

“Boomer had an issue come up that required our help literally half an hour ago.”

“Okay. I’m guessing since you’re being weird that it’s a female.”

“Yes. Two of them.” I suppose I’d be a bit put the fuck out if my man was out with other women claiming they needed help.

“Oh, God. Not like the girls with the whole Ghost thing?” She sounds more concerned than jealous.

Ghost? “No, but a stalker situation.”

“Okay. Well, stop acting like a weirdo and get home now before I kick your ass.”

“I’m on my way. I have one with me and the other is riding with Blade. In fact, he’s calling me now. I’ll see you soon, my love.”

“Careful.” He ends the call and picks up the other call.

“What’s going on?”

“We’re clear. We’re not being followed.”

“Okay. Let’s make the switch.” We pull off onto the side of the road and wait a minute. He comes up and then Bee hops into the back seat.

“Hey, girl. I feel better now that we’re together. No offense,” she says, giving Blade an apologetic look. My best friend and cousin has no damn shame, and I love her for it.

“None taken. I get it. Now buckle up.”

“I’ll stay behind another five just in case.”

“Thanks, Blade.”

“We have another forty minutes and we’ll be home,” he tells us before he begins driving again.

Forty minutes is a long time, so both of us fall asleep.

We only wake up when the vehicle comes to a full stop and Beast cuts the engine. “Girls, we’re here. Stay put for a minute while I look around, and then I’ll tell you to get out.” I rub my eyes and look around, trying to gain my bearings, but I’m confused as hell as to where we are. It’s pitch black outside.
