For one second, she doesn’t say anything, and that second is the longest of my entire life, longer than the night she got hunted, longer than the surgery, longer than the stairwell.
Then she’s down on her knees in front of me, both of us kneeling now, and she takes my face in her hands, nodding before she can get the word out.
“Yes.” She’s laughing and crying at once. “Yes, you idiot, get up, you’re going to hurt your chest. Yes. Of course it’s yes. It was always going to be yes.”
I get the ring on her finger with hands that won’t hold still, and she throws her arms around my neck, careful and yet not careful at all. I hold the whole of my future against my aching chest.
I came up out of a stairwell in Southeast Portland with nothing. I built an empire based on crimes.
And now I’m going to spend the rest of my life on a quiet street with this woman in my kitchen every single morning, and I have never, not once, not for a single second of my whole hungry life, wanted anything the way I want that.
“I love you,” she says against my neck.
“I love you, sweet woman.” I press my lips to her hair and I hold on. “Welcome to a mundane life. I hear it’s the best one there is.”
