I hadn’t made it halfway across the yard when Carnage swooped me up over his shoulder.

“What are you doing? Put me down!”

“Nuh-uh.” His hand came down on my ass hard enough to make me cry out and jump.

“What was that for?”

“For turnin’ me the fuck on, baby.”

“If you think we’re having sex, you can think again. I’m mad at you!”

“So, angry sex, then. Best kind.”

Judging by the way my pussy just clenched, I’d have to agree with his assessment.

Chapter Six

Carnage

Sleeping with Calliope in my arms had to be the best feeling in the whole world. I went to sleep with her scent surrounding me every single night. My need for her proved to be greater than any time in my entire life. Sometimes I’d fuck her two or three times in the night. And it wasn’t all me. She was just as possessive and needy of my attentions as I was of hers.

She hadn’t been bluffing when she’d said she was going to carry a knife, either. Somehow, the woman had found the biggest Bowie knife I’d ever seen and had taken to wearing it at her hip. More than once she’d fingered that knife when Ivana had approached me. There was always a gleam in her eyes like she was just wishing the bitch would. Whenever that happened, she’d find herself over my shoulder on the way back to our room for a hard, wild fuck.

Now, I lay in bed with her, lazily petting her back while she slept. It soothed me on some level to touch her like this. Just… up and down with my hand on her arm or back while she slept. More than one of my brothers had snickered and called me pussy-whipped, but I didn’t care. Hell, I freely admitted it.

Just as I was dozing off, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Text message. Of course, it was from Chase. Fuck. He wasn’t due back for another few days, and I’d been glad of it. Once he was back, there was a whole other can of worms to delve into. Sure, Cain had probably sent word he was needed back, but those orders were usually secondary to whatever mission his men were on.

Chase: Cain’s called me back early. Problem?

How to answer that?

Me: Maybe. He didn’t tell you what was going on?

Chase: Wouldn’t be asking you if he had. What you hiding?

Of course, the younger man would know I was stalling. But what to tell him?

Me: Where you at now?

Chase: On a plane back to Palm Beach.

Me: How you using your cell phone?

Chase: Private plane, dumbass. Be there in thirty.

Kid was feeling out what he was stepping into. I debated on whether or not to tell him. I’d sponsored Chase when he’d first applied to work at ExFil, and again when he’d wanted to prospect for Bones. He’d been with a mercenary outfit taking questionable orders from questionable people. He’d stood up for what was right, refusing a kill order without first going through the proper protocol to verify it. It had impressed everyone in Bones. Especially Data, since it was his woman Chase had been ordered to kill. We’d been pretty close three or four years ago, but he had a life of his own. We were MC brothers, but not close friends. Likely he’d reached out to me because of our past ties. Force of habit.

Me: Do you remember a woman named Cherry Mills?

There was a long pause. So long, I thought he might have set his phone down.

Chase: She and I were together for several months when I was prospecting for Bones. When you guys sent me to Salvation’s Bane to work with Red at the garage. She looking for me?

So, Chase was totally in the dark. About everything. I wasn’t sure what to feel or who to be angry at. In any case, this wasn’t a conversation to have via text.

Very carefully, I extracted myself from Calliope’s arms and stood, covering her carefully and leaving the room. Then I called Chase.

“I haven’t seen or heard from Cherry in nine or ten years,” Chase said by way of greeting. “What’s she doing there? How’d she find me?”

“She ain’t. When was the last time you spoke to her?”

There was silence while I imagined Chase thought it over. “The night I left. She and her little sister were giving me grief about the club. Neither of them could believe Bones or Bane were any better than gangs. Cherry was pretty hardcore against it while her sister went along for the ride. Callie was her name. Why? I mean, hell. I’d be glad to see her. Cherry wasn’t a bad person. Just… I don’t know. Young?” He snorted. “Seems stupid to say because she was a year older than me.”

“So you had no contact with her, or anyone representing her, after you left?”
