“Why the fuck do I have to be so close to you?” I demanded, looking at Blayke. He had to be the one behind this. It just had his damn name written all over it, the cocky bastard.
He smirked, his blue eyes glinting in the low lighting of the room. Mischief swirled in their depths, and my belly swooped. He was clearly a man who knew what he wanted and went after it. And he had no qualms about manipulating certain situations to his advantage. It should have been a toxic red flag. Such a huge red flag, in fact, that there should’ve been someone running around behind him waving one to warn me away.
But dammit, I liked that he wanted me so badly that he’d be manipulative in claiming me.
That didn’t mean I’d make this easy on him though. I was going to make him work to have me.
“Don’t pretend you don’t want to be right next door to me, mama,” he teased.
Mama. That fucking name should not get me as hot as it did. I wasn’t one for cute little pet names, but there was something about the way that word rolled off Blayke’s tongue that made me want to hear it more and more.
“Right next door?” I snapped. I looked at Alejandro, who was watching us with a hint of amusement and also annoyance. How someone felt both things at once, I’d never know, but he managed it. “I want a different room. I’m not rooming next door to him.”
“His prospect, his orders,” Alejandro drawled. “Out of my hands, Noah.”
“Come on, mama. It won’t be so bad,” Blayke said, drawing my agitated gaze back to his. In the face of my aggravation, he just looked fucking gleeful. “I don’t even snore loudly, so you won’t hear me through the walls.” He leaned in so close to me, I could see the gray flecks in his blue eyes. “But if you want to hear something else, you just let me know, and I can make it happen.”
Pressing my hand to his shoulder, I pushed him back from me, making him chuckle. “I’d call you an idiot, but calling you that would be an insult to all stupid people,” I bit out. But even though my voice was cold, I was feeling all warm and fuzzy.
Goddamn him for being so fucking smooth. He wasn’t making this play-hard-to-get thing easy.
Instead of being offended, because apparently, being offended wasn’t a thing Blayke was capable of, his grin just widened until a dimple appeared in each cheek. I swear to fuck, I swooned internally. Those dimples gave him a boyish charm that wiped away some of his rough edges, and Christ, I wanted to know what’d it’d be like to make those dimples appear more often.
“Fuck, I love it when you get all pissy with me.” He grabbed my duffel bag from the floor by my feet, then jerked his chin in the direction of the staircase. “Let’s go, mama. Time to get settled in and shower. You stink.”
I glowered at him as he began ascending the stairs. “And right now, you’d make onions cry,” I retorted.
His cackle echoed down the staircase.
“Are they going to be like this the entire time?” Gidget asked, his voice low and deep, with a hint of a rasp from lack of use. He’d barely said five words the entire drive from Texas to Oaxaca.
“Probably,” Geek responded. “She’s been at everyone’s throats since the moment she showed up at the clubhouse. Even went off on Johnston. Woman’s got balls.”
“I like her,” Halo said. “I hope Blayke convinces Johnston to patch her in. She’s gonna be valuable.”
Damn right I was going to be. And I was going to prove to Blayke that I was more than just a big mouth and what laid between my legs. I was just as cold and deadly as they could be, and they’d find that out soon enough.

Noah leaned forward and grabbed a cookie from the tray Alejandro’s housekeeper had brought into the sitting room for all of us. I wasn’t in the mood for anything sweet. I liked the particular brand of spicy sitting across from me on the other couch, but she wasn’t letting me anywhere near her to taste her, so I just had my imagination to work with.
“Do we know anything new yet?” Halo asked, reclining back into the couch with a beer in his hand. “I mean, besides what we already know, what else do we have to work with? Johnston just sent us all down here a bit blind.”
“No,” Alejandro told him. Halo dramatically sighed, even going so far as to lean his head back to stare up at the ceiling. I bit back a laugh. “I have people digging to find out more information on this uprising group. But as of right now, I have not heard anything. Since I was unaware of them up until now, I imagine finding information on them will be difficult. They’re not like past groups I’ve dealt with. They’re sneakier and more advanced, clearly.”
