She was either going to die or be kept alive while wishing she was dead.

As approaching headlights came from behind them and got closer to the Demon’s stopped vehicle, the reverse lights extinguished and so did the brake lights.

With a rev of the engine, the tires squealed again as the biker took off and the other vehicle slowed down.

Please don’t hit me. Please don’t hit me.

Using her shoulder in an attempt to clear the blood from her vision, all it did was make her cry out and double over in pain.

The rest was a blur.

A car stopping beside her. The flash of hazard lights. Panicked voices. More than one.

Someone touching her, pulling her up to a seated position. Trying to help her stand.

She couldn’t. She couldn’t stand. She was too dizzy, too weak.

And questions. Lots of questions she couldn’t process. Or answer.

Except one.

“Owen Decker,” she managed to whisper before once again, everything went black.

Decker dug his phone out of his front pocket when it began to vibrate. The unknown caller had dialed his personal cell phone number and the call had been forwarded to his task force phone.

He debated whether to answer. But then sitting there waiting on Sloane meant he had time to kill, so he might as well screw with the scammer wanting to sell him a fake extended car warranty, if that was who it was.

He slid his finger across the screen and put it to his ear. “Yeah?”

“Is this Corporal Decker?”

He sat up straighter. “Yeah. Who’s this?”

“Trooper Cannan out of Waynesburg.”

What the fuck was going on?

“There was an incident.”

Decker’s heart seized.

“You know a Sloane Parrish?”

Jesus fucking Christ. He shot up out of the chair and to his feet. “Yes. She…” Shit. “Lives with me.”

“Got two units headed over to your house. She was abducted—”

“Who was abducted?” he shouted into the phone.

“Ms. Parrish. She escaped her kidnapper by rolling out of the car while it was still moving. A passerby pulled over and the suspect took off. They weren’t able to get the registration information so we don’t have anyone in custody.”

Fucking motherfucker.

T-Bone. It had to be.

If it wasn’t him, it was another one of those fucking Demon dickheads.

“You there?” he barely heard past the blood rushing in his ears.

He forced out, “Yeah. I have a four-year-old.”

“There was no child with her. She didn’t mention one, either, but she’s in and out of consciousness. So, we didn’t get any answers.”

Val not being with her could be good, or could be bad. He sure as fuck hoped it was the first one. “Where’s Sloane now?” He needed answers about Val before he lost his fucking mind.

“She’s being transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan.”

“I’m already there.”

“At the hospital?”

“Yes. Sloane’s sister was admitted. I was waiting for Sloane to return.”

“Well, she’s returning, but by ambulance since she was attacked by whoever took her and she was injured further when she rolled out of the moving car.”

Jesus.

He opened his mouth to respond but snapped it shut when Trooper Cannan continued. “She should be arriving shortly. Are you going to wait there or head home to be with your child?”

“You said you have units enroute over to my house?”

“That’s correct. When I called it into dispatch and mentioned your name, I found out my lieutenant had already ordered two to head over to your address after getting a 911 call from a neighbor.”

Thank fuck for whoever called emergency dispatch and also for Sloane managing to tell them his name. “Can you get back to me as soon as they get on scene and let me know if my daughter’s there and okay?”

He was torn whether to rush home to check for himself or to wait for Sloane to arrive at the hospital. His brain was telling him to obtain information from her first. His heart was screaming at him to get home and see Val with his own two eyes. To make sure she was okay, both physically and mentally. If she witnessed any of Sloane’s abduction…

Cannan cut into his racing thoughts. “I’ll do that. Should I give them a heads up that you’re on your way?”

“If Sloane is arriving here shortly, I’ll talk to her first. But I’ll also be sending someone else over to the house until I can get there myself.”

“A family member?”

Not officially. “Another badge.” He just didn’t know who he could get a hold of right away. He’d start with Crew and have him get a phone tree going to see who could respond the quickest.

“Cannan, my daughter’s name is Val.” He tried to clear his throat to prevent it from closing up, but he was failing. “Please let the responding Troopers know that. She’s probably scared. Maybe even hiding.”

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Please be hiding and safe.

“You got it. Hey, I need to ask… Do you have any idea who might’ve done this? Of course we tend to make more enemies than friends in this job, but does anyone have a personal vendetta against you or her?”
