“What’s life without a little risk?” I take my eyes off the parking lot at Barlow Auto Repair for the slightest of moments to look at Jade. There’s a playful look on her face.

“I tend to like my family jewels exactly where they belong.” Between my legs, not sucked up into my stomach after her brother rightfully kicks me square in the nuts.

“That would be a problem, especially since I’m particularly fond of them.” Jade and I, well, this is new, though not new-new. Still, it’s long enough to know she’s it for me. I’m gone for her, and she’s damn sure gone for me. Nobody knows, and considering the pact I made with Jade, it’ll be a while before they do.

“Fuck.” I bite down on my lower lip, giving her the same look she likes a little too much, even when we’re somewhere I can’t make good on it—a damn issue considering what went down not even twenty minutes ago.

The minute Jade called me, everything stopped. She’d sounded upset, and I didn’t know what the hell was happening.

Did Jace figure shit out?

Did some dickhead touch her at the bar she works at?

I didn’t fucking know, and as much as I wanted her to spew it out as fast as she could, I didn’t push for answers. I grabbed my keys, dropped the invoice I’d been working on for Locke & Key Towing, and started making my way outside. As I was trying to figure out which vehicle to take, she finally got to the part of being broken down on the side of the road.

Fifteen minutes later, I’d reached her, on a deserted back road, clearly on her way home from working at the bar, judging by the black top, jean skirt, and canvas sneakers on her feet. I pulled in front of her car and prepared to hook her up in case I couldn’t figure out the problem.

She greeted me with a hesitant smile, told me she couldn’t get her car to shift into second gear without slamming down on the pedal and was pretty sure the transmission is shot to shit. Instead of commenting, I wrapped her up in my arms, kissed the crown of her head, and told her she could take one of the spares I keep at the yard until she got a new set of wheels sorted out.

That led to her kissing me, me lifting her by the back of her legs, and us going at each other like we weren’t wrapped up in one another last night.

“Yes, please.” I shake my head, she lets out a giggle, and I get back to what I was doing, offloading her car at Barlow’s.

“Sit tight. Once I have it offloaded, I’ll walk in with you to see what Colt has to say.” She’s known Colt for years. Hell, everyone has. She can also take care of this without me running interference. Except she doesn’t have to, and I don’t want her to feel like she’s ever alone.

I hop out of the driver’s side, leaving the door open, knowing I’ll be back in it after I make sure my rig is lined up with the parking spot.

“You’re playing with fire, sugar,” I say as Jade slides down the driver’s side of my tow truck behind me. If it weren’t for me standing there, she’d show the world exactly how soft, firm, and bare she is beneath her jean skirt. I’d know because in my pocket is the pair of her panties I managed to snag from the ground before she could locate them. I’ll keep them at my place for safekeeping, and when neither of us can sneak the other in, they’ll be wrapped around my length as I take care of business.

“Who, me?” I can hear the sound of a motorcycle off in the distance, which can only mean one thing: Jace is on his way. How he knows where Jade is, is anyone’s guess, and I can tell you one thing: I’m not looking forward to starting a fight out here in public.

“Jade, you’re the fuel to the fire, and I’m the wood soaking it the hell up.” She tosses her head back, laughing freely, and only stops when she hears the same distinct sound I do.
The last thing Colt expects to find on his doorstep in the middle of the night is a stranded stranger.

Colt doesn’t do complicated, and Sable has complicated written all over her.

His life is run his mechanic shop and raise his daughter.

Everything changes with Sable. She slams into his life—stubborn, gorgeous, and fiercely independent. His quiet world starts to shift.

He swears this is temporary. She’s just passing through. But every heated glance, every accidental brush of her body against his, only pulls him deeper.

He’s not supposed to want her.
She’s not supposed to stay.
Some falls are impossible to resist

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

COLT

SEVEN YEARS EARLIER

“Any updates?” my dad asks, knocking me out of my living nightmare. I didn’t notice them walking in, so deep in my own thoughts, what the fuck, how the fuck, and who the fuck keeps replaying in my head over and over again.

“The neighbors heard the crash, said they could hear it a mile up the road, sirens blaring, that it was a scene out of a horror movie,” Mom adds. Dad is right beside her when I finally look up. I’d had my head bowed, forearms resting on the top of my thighs while attempting to hide the emotion clogging my throat ever since I’d been updated. Needless to say, my knees fucking buckled so hard I nearly hit the ground.

Whatever they see written on my face must tell them all they need to hear. I stand and start heading their way, meeting them in the middle. Not for the first time am I thankful for the small-town community hospital that’s luckily not packed with people. Especially with the news I’m about to deliver. It’s going to be a devastating blow, having to relay the words the doctors gave me moments ago won’t be easy.

“Kara’s in surgery.” I’d gotten the call first. They didn’t realize who was in the accident until a sheriff knocked on their door. From there, my parents called me, and I dropped everything to get my ass here. They were an hour away, at a dinner and a show in the big city for their anniversary.

“How bad?” Dad asks.

“Shattered femur and hip fracture. The latter will take time to heal. The femur is going to require rods and a plate. She’s got a long road ahead of her that will likely lead to a permanent limp caused by a leg length difference. They’re not sure what all it’ll entail until they see how she heals.” I swallow down the lump in my throat. My sister will recover, she’s strong, but she also wasn’t driving and didn’t receive the impact on her side.

“Christ. What about Brooke?” Mom lets out a gasp when she sees whatever a mother sees on their child’s face. It must be one of inner turmoil, because my guts feel like they're twisted in knots. My heart hasn’t stopped racing, and my world hasn’t stopped spinning.

“She’s—” I take a moment to regain my composure. Mom is going to lose it, so will Dad. And fuck, I already have, which is the reason why my jaw aches from clenching it to keep myself from falling apart. “Brooke is gone, Mom. They worked on her until they couldn’t anymore.” She moves away from Dad and wraps her arms around my waist, not giving a single shit that I’m still in my work clothes and more or less getting grease on her best clothes.

“Both of them?” Dad asks. My eyes are closed, and when a tear slides down my cheek, I don’t bother to wipe it away. Instead, I hold my mom to me. She needs me, and hell if I don’t need her, too.

“They’re working on delivering the baby now.” Mom weeps harder. Dad rocks back on his heels like he received a shot to his chest. Which is entirely the way I’m feeling. My baby could have died and still might not make it. She’s coming five weeks early. Her lungs aren’t fully developed, and there’s a good chance she’ll be in the neonatal intensive care unit for a minimum of a month. While Brooke and I couldn’t make a go of our relationship, it doesn’t hurt any less to know our daughter will live a life without her mom or to know I’ll be doing this alone without her there.

Kara and Brooke were heading to our parents’ home for the night after they spent their evening together. A standing girls' night of sorts, where they’d meet after work, grab a bite to eat, and do what they do best: gab about their day. My relationship with Brooke might not have worked out, but she’d always be a part of our family. We ended things cordially, picked a name out for our daughter, and while the specifics about custody or child support hadn’t been decided, we both knew we’d make it work, no matter what.

Brooke’s family was always a volatile mess. They never talked, pretty much all that ensued was yelling. She didn’t want that, and I’d never live a life where I’d have to relentlessly walk on eggshells. Kara took to her like a built-in sister of sorts, and even if a child hadn’t been involved, they’d still have ended up friends.

What none of us were prepared for was a call like tonight, a head-on collision due to a driver driving the wrong way. The rural area in which my parents live means there aren’t any street lights, so things can get confusing if you’re not from around our parts. And with the snowbirds, along with the influx of tourists, well, it’s sad to say that this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
Coralynn Parker drives me wild.

She flirts, teases, and runs at a moment’s notice. And I’ve played along. Until now.

A hotel elevator.
A mechanical failure that locks us away from the outside world.

It should be a nightmare— except with her, it’s not.

One confession changes everything. She lets her guard down, allowing me to see the woman behind the armor.

This time, I’m not letting Coralynn Parker run.
Not when she tastes like peppermint and feels like mine.

Are you ready to see Doctor Anthony Gallo and Coralynn Parker get their Happily Ever After? You'll find all you need in this holiday romance. Add in a splash of forced proximity, tension of the sexy variety, and you’re in for a treat!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

TONY

A COUPLE OF WEEKS EARLIER

"I knew my first taste of you would be the sweetest." Coralynn Parker's peppermint-flavored lips explode on mine with each sweep of my tongue. She's into the kiss, so into it that I'm pretty sure she has no idea we're in a public setting. If she did, I have no doubt this would be over before it started. Her hands grip the hair at the nape of my neck, nails scoring the skin, the feeling of her undulating against me. Her body comes alive, and I'm not even touching her, too afraid that if I get my hands on her, I'll do something crazy like tear our clothes off. Then I wouldn't stop until I had her moaning my name over and over again.

That would lead to a slew of problems when reality came crashing back, and shit would go sideways even worse. Instead, I deepen the kiss, soft murmurs leaving her breathless, and fuck, I'll never see or smell her scent without thinking about the woman who's currently climbing me like a tree.

I've been chasing her for what seems like for-fucking-ever. This woman has my mind swimming in circles, my heart racing, my gut aching, and my dick pounding.

The moment I set my sight on the elusive woman, she runs at the slightest provocation, a heated glance, a tilt of my lips, and god forbid I take one stride to head her way. A fire lights in her eyes, and then she runs away from me, away from the feelings building inside her, and she does it at every turn.

Now, I have Coralynn right where I want her. Her running ends today.

"That doesn't mean I'm going to let you have all of me." Her tongue darts out, moistening her lips. Fuck, she possesses a beauty like no other. In a room filled with others, she stands out, taking my breath away with every passing moment. Her hair is the color of toasted honey, and natural waves cascade down her back and shoulders. Her fair complexion sets off her eyes: clear, captivating, and a shade of cerulean-blue.

Coralynn's looks aren't all that attracts me or my hard cock. It's the way she carries herself—confident, fierce, and with an independence streak a mile long.

"We'll see about that." I dip my head, gaze intently on hers, and when I'm merely an inch away from kissing her again, she does what I've come to expect.

"That we will." She slips from beneath my hold, shimmying her body while bending her knees. It's funny she thinks I'd cage her in. Still, it's a mistake on my part, not holding her close to my body and only bracing my hands on the wall on either side of her head.

"One day, Coralynn, you'll realize I'd chase you till the ends of the earth. So, do your worst, but expect to be caught, and to love every minute of it," I say as she retreats. That's as close as I've come to having her right where I want her since this cat-and-mouse game began, and I look forward to the next round.

She says something else, but with her back to me, the words are hard to decipher. I think it's safe to assume she's smiling with a smugness, saying something along the lines of ‘catch me if you can.’

I stay where I am, still in my doctor's coat, having run into Coralynn after coming back from my lunch break. She and her sister, Shae, have been working on a plan to expand LITHE. It's taken them talking to Luke, my partner at the CG Obstetrics & Gynecology, along with the rest of his friends, to help make the expansion happen. Which means Coralynn and I see each other way more than she ever expected.

My eyes watch as she slowly disappears. The athleisure wear she has on sculpts every delicious curve of her body. Her back is long and elegant. Lean muscle traces beneath the skin, subtle, and gives her a quiet strength. A tapered waist, flaring gently at her waist, and the gentle sway of her hips with each step she takes only makes her walking away that much more devastating.

I let out a low chuckle, thinking about all the ways I can tame the wild cat, and my guess is it won't be easy.

"She's still giving you hell, I see." Colt comes up beside me, hands in his pockets and wearing his usual work uniform: baseball cap, black cotton shirt with his mechanic shop emblazoned above the left breast and the back of the fabric, a pair of jeans, grease-stained, and a pair of steel-toe boots.

"Yeah, I'm wearing her down, though." I should head into the office, get ready for afternoon rounds and patient appointments. There's a reason Colt is here, though, and I'm beginning to worry it might have something to do with his little girl.

Just when he thinks everything is falling into place, his past comes crashing into his future. Turning his world upside down. But will Jude know what forever feels like, or will it be too late?

What you'll find in Feels Like
Both are gamers
Past trauma
Tattooed Couple
Meet in real life at a rock festival
Overprotective Hero
Fell in love with a girl at a rock show

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

JUDE

One Month Earlier

The moment I wake up, my body catapults to a sitting position as gasps of air leave my lungs, rough and ragged. My hand clutches at my chest, trying to calm the beating of my heart. Sweat is pouring from every inch of my body while all my senses go on high alert, and I can hear every noise in my otherwise quiet home. The only good part about waking up like this is that I’m out of my nightmare.

For now.

You’d think almost twenty-seven years later, I’d have overcome my past, but I haven’t. I’m haunted in my weakest hours.

When the world is dark.

When I’m the most vulnerable.

When I’m asleep.

I’m transported to the here and now. No one is here, and there’s not one single fucking reason for my past to enter my future.

I toss the covers from my drenched body, throw my legs over the side of the mattress, and take a deep breath. My elbows hit the tops of my thighs, head hanging down. The clenching and unclenching of my fingers help center me from spiraling to do something stupid. I leave my eyes open while attempting to calm myself down and try to think about other shit, shit that doesn’t suck me into the vortex of my fucked-up childhood.

“Get it together, man.” I run my fingers through my hair, look at the clock on the other side of my room, and watch the time change from two fifty-nine to three o’clock in the morning. There’s no going back to sleep, not after the nightmare I just had, one that still has me ready to crawl out of my skin.

“Cam, disable the alarm.” The software system I created is voice activated yet more detailed than that, capturing the unique tone of my voice. I’m still ironing out the kinks before I make it available to my friends, their business fronts, or the public.

“Good morning, Jude. Alarm is deactivated,” the slightly less robotic female voice responds through the speakers. I wince at even a piece of technology notating that it’s morning at this awful hour. The alarm chimes, a two-beat succession letting me know that a blaring horn won’t sound off and wake up the rest of my neighborhood when I open the French-style patio doors.

I stand up, nab my phone from the nightstand, and check what my notifications look like—trivial bullshit, e-mails, texts that can wait, and another alert about who’s currently online. I drop the phone back on the wood table and grab my smokes and lighter before walking toward the back door. A few seconds later, the deadbolt is unlocked, the door is wide open, and I’m met with the stillness of the night.

The Florida humidity smacks you in the face. Summer is thick in the air, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. It’s never ending, clinging around for months on end. The rare time it drops below fifty percent, you wonder if a cool front moved in, only to wake up the next day with shit going back to normal, and you’re left thinking it was a fever dream. I walk further out on the deck, completely naked. My house may be in a neighborhood of sorts similar to Asher’s, minus the fact that my lot is a little over an acre, but the privacy fence keeps it secluded, so I’m able to use my backyard however I see fit. I drop the nasty habit near the edge of the pool, one I picked up years ago and have yet to kick, probably because anytime I do, the nicotine calms me down from days like these. I drop myself into the pool and dunk my body below the surface, exhaling every last bit of oxygen until I’m nearly to the bottom. I close my eyes for the first time since waking up and am finally in a point of time that does me not one bit of good. I flip to my back to slowly float to the surface. The stickiness of sweat is gone and is replaced with chlorine. I’ve yet to convert the system to salt water, it’s at the bottom of my list for now.
I don’t break rules. I write them. Until Serena Beck walks into my office.

She’s supposed to be a favor.
She’s my business partner’s niece.
She’s off-limits in every possible way.

Untouchable.

There’s only one problem — every time she looks at me, I imagine things I have no business wanting. And when she says my name, the control I’ve spent years perfecting starts to unravel. Serena Beck has me wrapped up in her, and I have no intention of letting her go.

What you'll find in Wrapped Up in
office romance
grumpy x sunshine
protective hero
temptation/forbidden
she’s the exception

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

SERENA

One week earlier

“Shit,” I mutter beneath my breath in the bathroom stall. My first day on the job, and I start my period. Of all the freaking luck I could have, this is what I’m greeted with? Luckily, I’m prepared, thanks to my mom for drilling it into my head to always pack a pair of panties, a pad, and a tampon in a plastic baggie. This started well before I hit that magical age in life where your body betrays you when you least expect it. At school, no less.

It seems I may meet my demise before the day has even started because, wouldn’t you know, I bled through not only my panties but also stained my gray skirt. I dig through my bag, grab my necessities, and make quick work of the process. There isn’t much I can do about the fabric, which sucks, completely and totally. I don’t have a magic bag full of tricks, like say stain remover, peroxide, or a spare change of clothes.

Once I’m finished, I leave the bathroom stall to wash my hands, do a quick spin in the mirror, and stare at myself in absolute horror. The one day I didn’t pack a cardigan, naturally, since I decided to clean my car out yesterday, too. Which means I don’t have any extra clothes in there, either.

I am well and truly fucked.

At the age of thirty-two, I should not be starting a brand-new career, and I should absolutely not be starting my period in the middle of the month due to stress, especially since I’m two freaking weeks early. Yet here I am. Here I fucking am.

The only thing I can do now is strategically place my bag behind me, hold it there, and pray that someone will allow me to borrow something until I can beg my mom to bring a cardigan of hers or mine. Which means I need to text her right away before she makes plans with her group of girlfriends, including my aunt.

I whip my phone out of my purse, bring up the thread with my mom, and start my text.

Me: 911.

Me: Mom. Mom. Mother!

Me: HELP ME.

Mom: Serena Lily Beck, stop giving me a freaking heart attack. What’s wrong?

Me: I started my stupid-ass period. I need a coat, a cardigan, a sweater vest, a brown paper sack, anything really.

Mom: Go to Uncle Todd’s office. Aunt Val is here with me. She said there’s some kind of sweater of hers there, but also, your uncle keeps a sports coat there, and it would go perfectly with what you’re wearing today. Val said this, the fashion icon of the century, that oversized is the “in” trend.

Me: I love you both. You’re life savers. I’m heading there now before I have to report to HR. Thank you! Hugs and kisses, talk later.

I don’t wait for a response. I’ve got places to be and people to see, and being late will only make this stressful day even more so. I strategically place my bag in such a way that it’s behind me, holding it there with the palm of my hand, and walk out of the restroom.

I’m on a mission as I step into the small hallway, unaware of my surroundings while looking at my feet instead of where I’m going.

“Oomph.” The wind is knocked out of my sails as I run straight into the hardest chest of my life. My forehead meets the brunt of it, and just when I’m about to stagger backwards and likely land on my ass, I don’t, because two strong hands wrap around my upper biceps and keep me horizontal.

“Whoa, there, you good?” When the man before me speaks, his voice has a low and rough quality. It’s so thick with a gravelly tone that I want him to keep talking so I can catch each and every word.

“Um... yeah, I think so.” I take a hesitant step back while looking up at the man who saved me from a greater demise than the bathroom incident. The way my day is going, I’d end up sprawled out, legs spread wide, and give the handsome stranger a view he would never recover from, string included, because why not?

I’m greeted with light brown eyes that remind me of a steady storm slowly building in intensity. His warm skin tone, full lips, and a strong jawline under a short beard give him a rough, lived-in edge. He’s all solid lines and broad shouldered, accompanied with a quiet strength, a type of build that looks like it comes from real work and not a gym mirror. Each time he makes a subtle movement, it’s unhurried and grounded—like a man who isn’t in a rush and never needs approval to show he’s capable of moving mountains.
Every thought I have of Letty Barnes stirs a hunger inside me that’s become impossible to ignore.

My housekeeper moves through my home like a whisper—quiet, careful, always trying to disappear. She thinks staying invisible keeps her safe from what burns between us. But all it does is make me crave her more.

One day, everything changes, and in that moment, the line between wrong and right disappears completely.

Letty doesn’t just capture my attention.
She becomes my world.
And I’ll do anything I can to protect my kitten

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

LETTY

One Year Earlier

Run.

Run.

Run.

Three letters, one syllable, and the only word I keep in my vocabulary as a consistent word. Looking back, I should have seen the signs, except I'd been naïve. Growing up the way I did will do that to you, time had always been tough in the Barnes household.

The wondering how rent would be paid, if there would be enough money for power, and no longer stretching food to last as long as possible stopped.

When Mom met Joshua when I was fifteen, things changed. We moved into a home, one with a yard, where you didn't have to wedge a chair under the handle of the front door because god forbid the landlord fix such a thing as a deadbolt. I also didn't have to sweep the floors of the grocery store or bag said groceries while maintaining my grades in high school. Mom was swept off her feet, and in doing so, so was I. My blinders were perfectly in place, and they weren't yanked off my face until that day.

The day they were married started one of the happiest times of my mom's life. The cloud had lifted, and she smiled a true smile. The dark circles beneath her eyes slowly disappeared, and while she still preferred to work, no longer did she need three jobs, choosing to keep only one. A clerical job at Nicholas' office. Funnily enough, that's where they met. Mom had been a cleaner there, working late at night when they stumbled upon one another, and one thing led to another. Dates came along, overnight stays happened where I'd been invited, unlike all the other losers mom had met before, and I'd fallen for him, like a girl who needed a father figure in her life.

Years of solid good in our lives turned bad in the blink of an eye, with a phone call that changed our lives forever. I'd come home from college, where I'm studying to become a teacher, trying to help others like a lot of others had helped me. Everything came to a screeching halt—a hit and run, dead on impact, no suffering involved. At least that's what the police officers said when they knocked on the door to deliver the news.

Mom was gone.

Joshua wasn't home. I'd been by myself, and the officers stayed as long as they could. I held it together, telling them I would be alright. They still needed to deliver the news to my stepfather, proving it unsuccessful since they stopped at the house while another officer went to his work. When they asked me where else he might be, I only shrugged my shoulders. Mom kept tabs on Joshua, not me, though I found it odd they didn't ride to work together that morning like they usually did.

There would be no more Saturday morning pancakes, no more Mom listening to me talk about the drama happening with the girls at school, no more having a rough day and plopping on the couch beside her while she played with my hair. Those days are gone, and ever since we laid her to rest last month, I mourn them more and more as each day passes.

I never thought the day would come when I'd be in the predicament I'm in now—hearing what I'm hearing, seeing what I'm seeing, all while perched on the top step of the staircase. My arms wrapped around my legs, chin propped on my knees, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"I don't have the money," Joshua's voice is riddled with fear. I'd feel sorry for him if I hadn't just heard the other man say what he did, the one with the darkest edge, wearing brass knuckles on both hands. He’s the size of a linebacker and has the face of a beast.

"And how do you suppose we'll get it out of you?" A different person is talking now, one I can't see, and I'm not risking a single movement. I'd noticed a few things missing here and there at home, my stepfather's sports car being one of them. Another was the gold Rolex watch he wore on his wrist at all times. Still, I didn't think it would come to Joshua sitting in a chair with a menacing group of men surrounding him.

"Give me another week. I promise I'll have it. All of it." I roll my eyes. I've watched enough movies with loan sharks to know this isn't going to work.

"I'll give you twenty-four hours, then I'll take everything I can from you, including your stepdaughter. How old is she now, twenty?" My stomach sinks, and the overactive imagination inside my head takes hold. Movies and books are my outlet, the way to quiet the noise that seems to rattle around when the world is too noisy. Mafia romance, motorcycle club romance, and the like are among my favorites. Which also means I know what's coming.

Jude Ellison wasn’t expecting her voice on the other end of the mic—but the moment he hears the raspy, sultry tone, he knows she’s meant to be his. Forever.

Ronnie is everything Jude didn’t know he was searching for—wild, fearless, and the addiction he’ll never quit. The more he learns about her, the deeper he falls. Their connection burns fast and fierce, impossible to ignore. Every late-night gaming session, call, or text ignites a spark that pulls them closer.

With her, for the first time in Jude’s life, love seems possible.

Just when he thinks everything is falling into place, his past comes crashing into his future. Turning his world upside down. But will Jude know what forever feels like, or will it be too late?

The last thing Dr. Luke Camden should be thinking about is her.

There’s something about the way she looks at him. Soft and sinful, eyes dark with desire, sliding over him in a slow, sensual way, holding him hostage every damn time.

It makes him lose all sense of time.

She’s intoxicating.
She’s off-limits.
She’s his patient.
Golden retriever hero

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

SHAE

Two Weeks Earlier

“Hey, Shae, how’s your day going?” Lyric walks in through the studio doors, a smile on her face and a pep in her step. She’s here three times a week and part of the reason I’ve seen an influx of new clients. Between her and the girls, Lennie, Kenny, Winnie, and Maci, word of mouth has gotten around Oak County, the neighboring towns around Oak View, where my studio is situated.

When I opened up LITHE a year ago, I barely had two nickels to rub together, especially after installing the mirrors, floors, and speakers throughout the once art gallery. It truly helped when I looked at the space with the realtor that the plan was completely open. My parents being the most supportive helped in the way of elbow grease. They couldn’t help me financially, yet they pulled their weight in what I needed most. Dad built the walls for three separate rooms for different classes to be held, saving me a butt load of cash. He also did similar for the reception area, where I’m standing now. The reception desk and area were also built by him.

“Hi, Lyric, not too bad. What about yours?” I don’t tell her that I’m waffling between closing the studio down for the afternoon and having to refund or credit the next classes for the day. One of my instructors turned in her notice this morning and didn’t feel the need to give me her two weeks, either. Needless to say, I truly hope she won’t be using my name as a reference or that her next place of employment chooses not to call me.

“Oh, you know, same old, same old.” She shrugs her shoulders. I notice the iced coffee with the Oak & Brew emblazoned in a clear plastic cup with olive green print and their signature logo in the form of a coffee cup on the side.

“Anything new on the menu this week?” I ask. Oak & Brew is known for more than just coffee—they also have baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and teas.

“Yes, it’s all things cinnamon this week. Cinnamon swirl latte, cinnamon coffee cake, cinnamon tea, and endless others. The girls and I have stopped by almost every day so far. I swear they put crack in their drinks, because I am officially addicted.” Lyric takes the last sip of her drink; the slurping tells me more than she ever needed to.

“Crack in the form of caffeine. You are not wrong.” Tomorrow morning, I’ll be waking up earlier than usual to get a fix of my own.

“Nope. Where are the others?” Lyric asks.

“Well, my sister is on vacation with her girlfriends. They take an annual trip, and this is their week.” They’re younger than I am by about six years or so; my sister, Coralynn, is what my older brother, Zane, likes to call the oops baby. Whereas we’re two years apart, he and our baby sister are eight years apart. At least she doesn’t get the never-ending older brother tales that she’s adopted or is the milkman’s baby. I swear he’s a pain in the ass, yet I still love him even with his dumb jokes. “As for Blair, she quit this morning.”

Lyric’s mouth opens and closes. That’s about the size of it. I’d felt like a fish out of water as well. Trying to come up with a new instructor on the fly isn’t as easy as you’d think. Which means I’ll be working all of the classes and somehow finagling changing the schedule if I can.

“Are you looking for someone to replace her?” Lyric recovers, a thoughtful expression on her face.

“I would like to, but with the short notice she gave me and Coralynn being out of town, it’s going to be hard.” Coralynn helps out with the dance classes, contemporary and ballet. I know she’d help if she weren’t boozing and sunning it up with her girl gang.

“Damn.” I nod, agreeing with her just as the phone on the desk rings.

“Hi, thank you for calling LITHE. This is Shae, how can I help you?” Lyric stays where she is, leaning on the counter while pulling out her phone to text someone. I think it’s safe to assume she’s texting either Jagger, her man, or the girls in her group. Winnie brings her son, Sebastian, in, and she’s probably letting her know the toddler classes might be canceled for the time being.

“This is C & G Women’s Health. I’m calling to confirm your appointment for tomorrow at one o’clock.” I close my eyes and mouth the word shit. I’ve completely forgotten about my appointment with everything going on today.

“Is it possible to reschedule? Something came up unexpectedly.” Lyric raises her arms, waving them in a way to grab my attention. “Can you hold on for just a moment, please?” I ask the receptionist.
I always said I wouldn’t be the settling-down type—wild at heart, always chasing the next thrill. Everything changed the day Lyric came storming back into my life like a hurricane—sudden, intense, and impossible to ignore.

We were kids when she left, her parents packing up their house to moved for her father’s job.
Those were my mom's last words before she left this side of the earth twelve years ago. The same thoughts I’ve kept at the forefront of my brain and have never let go, not even when things got worse. I stayed true to her words, promising to take care of my dad, her husband, until his final breath.

I never thought in a million years that at the age of twenty-one, I’d be called home from college to hear the news of my mom having cancer. My parents told me I could go back, visit more throughout the semester, and then change universities when the school year ended. I squashed that idea like a bug beneath my shoe, transferring in the middle of spring semester and never looking back. My then boyfriend said we could make it work, insisting that a long-distance relationship didn’t mean we’d lose touch. I remained cautiously optimistic.

Then, like the saying goes, life happened, or rather shit happened. A domino effect as disappointment sank in, when a random phone number sent me a text message with an image of him in bed with another girl. I knew everything he said was in the heat of the moment. We were young, and I had more responsibility than most peers my age. I didn’t blame him.

He’d call me in the beginning, I’d call him back when I got a minute, and the conversations would last a minute or two here and there. I’d undoubtedly be needed by my mom or dad, and, well, he’d be heading to class, football practice, or a party, so we drifted apart. I never dated again once my mom passed away after her long and drawn-out battle, trying her hardest to keep going. She was a fighter, trying every chemotherapy and radiation therapy she could, even going as far to be a part of any research trial she’d qualify as a candidate for, but nothing helped. Two years later, we reluctantly said our goodbyes, and I’ve kept my promise that I would take care of my father, the love of her life, ever since.

Of course, I had no idea what that would entail until I started really noticing things about my dad. He’d forget a few things here and there. Mainly his keys when walking out the door to work on the base, or I’d notice a couple of other things here and there. His uniform would be messed up when he’d never once allowed himself or anyone else under his command look slightly disheveled. Then his doctor’s office called to confirm an appointment, and when I mentioned it to my father, he said he had forgotten. I understood the sentiment entirely. We’d been through a lot at the end with Mom, hospice coming and going at all hours of the day during her final days.

We both stayed by her side until I heard Mom say something to Dad. That’s when realization hit that they needed alone time together. I excused myself, swallowing back the lump in the back of my throat and blinking the tears away, only allowing myself to fall to pieces once I cleared the room. I ran to the bathroom and closed the door as quietly as possible, then my back slid down the wall, and my hand covered my mouth. I found a hand towel to muffle the sobbing and allowed the emotions to take over.

We buried her three days later, my dad in his dress blues sitting beside me, holding my hand, and while he maintained a brave face, I couldn’t help the tears sliding down my cheeks, unable to keep up with them. There weren’t enough tissues to combat the tears from losing my mother. My mind went into overdrive, thinking about all the moments that had been stolen from her and, selfishly, myself.

Now, here I am, standing next to my mother’s grave, where my father is in his final resting place beside her. The doctor’s appointment after Mom’s funeral hit me in the gut yet again. His general physician brought up my mother’s concerns, which had me at a loss for words.

My father was showing signs of early-onset dementia. My big, strong father, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, would need to see a neurologist, which resulted in doctor after doctor. Test after test would be run, and we’d eventually receive the diagnosis Mom had been trying to find before she became so sick that she couldn’t keep up. The downfall of everything was being kept in the dark. I know they were trying to overcome obstacles and thinking that everything would be okay. You know, like Mom going into remission and Dad not being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
Tysen Vaughn is used to commanding the skies, but when his eyes lock on Maci sitting at the airport bar, he’s suddenly grounded.
She’s captivating—her beauty, her energy—pulling him in with an undeniable force. One wild, unforgettable night of passion where time stood still. No last names, no promises, no expectations. Only raw, scorching chemistry.
When Tysen wakes up the next morning, the woman who rocked his world is gone. She’s vanished into thin air, and the only trace he has of Maci is the lingering scent of her clinging to his skin.
Months later, fate throws them back together. She’s on his private jet, just as stunning as ever—the only problem? She’s avoiding him at every turn, keeping her distance, and that only fuels Tysen’s desire for her. He’s going after the irresistible temptation, and he won’t stop until he has her in his arms again.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

MACI

Six Weeks Earlier

I’m jobless.

I’m homeless.

And I’m heartbroken.

“What can I get for you?” I’m knocked out of my reverie before tumbling into the levels of betrayal a woman can go through in the span of forty-eight hours.

“Tequila, and keep them coming,” I respond without looking up, too busy trying to slide onto the barstool without making a fool out of myself by falling to the ground. Too bad I’ve already done that in the form of being a dumb woman who chased after a man. Yep, I’m thirty-four years old and have not one single thing to show for it. No car and definitely no home to call my own, and a career that I’ve been more than made aware of currently has me blacklisted.

“Bad day?” I look up from the bar top, finally settled in, and am yanking my skirt down that has a penchant to rise up anytime there’s a chair of some sort involved. Why didn’t I take the time to change out of my work clothes and into a pair of comfy sweats? Oh, that’s right, because I had to somehow manage to hold my head high, keep my shoulders back, and sign the termination papers. Why not add more insult to injury? I did what I had to do. Unfortunately, it meant dressing appropriately because I would never allow that asshat to make me feel any more inferior than I already do. Then I had to swing back to the hotel I’d been staying at, grab my carry-on suitcase, and book it to the airport. I didn’t even have time to use the restroom since time was of the essence, and the last thing I wanted was to be stranded here longer than necessary. Fat a lot of good that did me.

“More like bad week,” I respond. Usually, I have better manners than the ones I’m portraying at the present moment. But I’ve been sitting at this airport for hours upon hours, waiting to board my plane, only to have to stay another night. You know, in the sort of way where it’s impossible to leave the tarmac. Apparently, there was a mechanical issue, then there was no pilot, and then the weather turned downright terrible. The excuses seemed endless. I was handed a voucher for a hotel room attached to the airport and sent on my merry way. It did indeed help dull the raging inferno inside of my soul, but barely.

“Thanks.” The shot of tequila burns like battery acid sliding down my throat.

“Another?” Kelsey asks. I noticed her name badge on the upper left-hand side of her shirt when I slugged the shot back.

“Please.” She pours another shot while my hand never leaves the glass. I’m acting ridiculous, like someone is going to take their last meal away, when the bar is empty. I let go of the glass, allowing it to sit on the dark wood, take a fortifying breath, and try to calm my quaking nerves.

“No problem,” Kelsey replies before moving away. I’d have thought for sure this bar would be busy with this being an international airport in a city I once loved. A place that at any given time could cater to your every whim. I keep my hands in my lap, my thumb fiddling with the mixed metal ring on my index finger, and think back on the reason why I’ve had to box up every last belonging I owned with my now ex-boyfriend, ship it to my parents’ house, and change my mailing address and every last password to every single thing—banking app, email, social media, and bills. It’s been a mess to have to do this from thousands of miles away from the comfort of your true home. A home I called the second everything went down. My dad tried to hop on the next plane to Vegas, but Mom and I talked him down, thankfully. It’s better to cut and, in my case, run. Sprint right back to my parents in Florida. Which is what I was trying to do today, except the world is out to get me, and yes, this is my woe-is-me moment. Tomorrow, I’ll pull my big girl panties up in order to face my fate. Today is not that day. I grab the shot and am about to suck it down in one swallow when I hear his voice.
