Maeve stopped running, only for a moment, trying to catch her breath. It had been a hard run, even in her bear form. She cocked her head to one side, listening for anyone that might be following, but the forest was quiet around her now. It was a far cry from the screams that had filled the air what seemed like only moments ago.

She had barely been out of the tunnel and into the woods when she’d seen the fire flying from the sky, the awful screeching of the dragons as they burned everything below them and then just as quickly flew away into the darkness without even touching down to see what they’d done.

Her heart lurched at the thought of what had happened to the men they’d torched without a second thought, and for what? They’d not even done it for their own purposes, but to win favor with a bear clan from the outside, a family that hadn’t lived here for years. What right did they have to turn back up here after all this time and attack a clan that had been here longer than any of those that opposed them?

Slowly, she made her way to the edge of the woods and slipped out, making her way to her friend’s house and shifting back into human form. She crept in the back door and grabbed some clean clothes from the laundry room, slipping into a pair of soft knit pants and a tank top before walking into the kitchen.

“Hey, honey. Where have you been?” Rebekah’s mom asked, her voice full of concern.

“I just went for a walk. I needed to clear my head.”

“I understand. I know it’s been rough the past few days for you. You must be worried sick about your fella.”

“He’s gone.”

“Gone?”

“All of them are gone. They brought in Dragons to do their dirty work for them.”

“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry,” the older woman replied, reaching out to hug her.

Maeve nodded and turned away. She should be crying, but she couldn’t. She felt something that she couldn’t quite explain inside. Rebekah appeared in the doorway and called out to her as she turned to walk away, but she ignored her. She made her way to her room to lie down, trying to push the sounds of the screams that filled her head into the abyss.

That had been several months ago. Like many of the women from her clan, she’d found a way to move on. Most of the clans here were sparse now. The Maguires had gutted them of their leadership, broken up their homes, and left them with next to nothing. Her clan no longer had an Alpha. In fact, it no longer had any men above the age of twelve. Anyone above that age had been enlisted to fight against the other clans.

Beyond the children, what remained were only the women not absorbed by the Maguire Clan as wives or mistresses. Those of a certain age had been relegated to doing laundry, cooking, and sewing as needed by Sorley, and later, Trill. Younger women had been forced into marriages, and young girls had been groomed for the same when they came of age. She had been one of the latter.

Now, she was free again, and like the other clans that were now free of the Maguires, they must rebuild. The question was how to do that with no Alphas other than children too young to lead. A meeting was called for some of the women to discuss what they could do to get their clan’s affairs in order. They weren’t technically Maguires as none of the women were of blood relation, and the children weren’t of an age to be a threat to anyone.

“Why do we need an Alpha?” Karla asked from the head of the table.

Today was the first meeting of their council—the handful of women remaining gathering together for the first time to discuss the future of their clan. Karla was the eldest and thus the one chosen to head up their discussions for now, but they would vote on a formal leader, though it might be a moot point as she didn’t see the local Alphas accepting an Omega in their fold.

“Because we are all Omegas. We’ve not been trained to lead. We lack the strength and standing,” Rebekah replied.

“Aye, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change,” Karla acknowledged.

“And what? Select an Omega as an Alpha of our clan? How does that work when we get challenged by an outside clan? Going up against an Alpha are you?” Rebekah said.

“Our Omega would not be an Alpha. She would always be an Omega and there is no reason for anyone to challenge us if we go about it right. We can join the new shifters council set up by the McNally Clan and they will provide us protection as a member,” Karla advised.

“What is it?” Ronan asked, walking toward the box his brother Olcan had open on the table in front of him and pulling back one of the half-closed flaps for a better view

“A warning,” Olcan replied as their brothers Fergus and Niall approached.

“Feckin’ Hell!” Ronan uttered, jerking his hand away from the box. “What are those? Ears?”

“Yep. Six of them.”

“Why?” Ronan asked, now joined by Fergus and Niall beside the box.

“A gift from the Maguires.”

“Who do they belong to?” Fergus asked, his face twisted into a mask of anger.

“Our spies, according to the bloody note included on top of them,” Olcan replied, picking up a piece of paper with dark splatters on the edges, holding it between two fingers for them to read.

“This blood is on your hands. We’ve sent what’s left of the bodies to their kin. They sang like birds between screams. War you wanted. War you have.”

“Fuck,” Fergus muttered.

“What do we do?” Ronan asked.

Despite being the slightest of the four McNally men, he was never one to back away from a fight. Always ready, some would say he was even eager for one.

“We fight,” Olcan replied solemnly.

“Fight how? The spies have been feeding back some information that already reflects that we are far outnumbered. Hell, we’re even out trained on the field of battle,” Niall said.

“We’ve done what we could in that arena,” Fergus barked.

“Aye. I know you’ve done the best you could, but we’re limited in numbers and we haven’t had the kind of freedom to train that they have in the old country. Not only have they been using their access to so many Omegas to multiply as rapidly as possible decade after decade, but they’ve absorbed any clans that might be willing to help,” Niall complained.

“They’ve not sucked them all in,” Olcan replied.

“Really? Like who?” Niall asked.

“Well, us, for one.”

“We ran away like cowards. Dad yanked us up and slipped away to America so they couldn’t get to us,” Niall reminded him.

“Yes, and if he hadn’t, we’d all be dead. You know that Sorley Maguire would not have let us live, and we were just boys. The auld fella couldn’t defend our mother and us.”

The mention of their mother and father drew silence for a moment. Whether they were all lost in memories or contemplation, Niall wasn’t certain.

When the Maguires had come for their clan, their life had changed in an instant, going from the four sons in line for their father’s role as Alpha to a rebirth on American soil as one of the most powerful Irish mafia families in Boston.

“Clan Byrne,” Fergus said, causing them all to look at him in surprise.

“Clan Byrne? Really? That’s who will save us?” Niall growled.

“No, not save, but help,” Fergus replied.

“Clan Byrne can’t even help themselves. They are nothing more than modern-day indentured servants to the Maguires. Most of their clan was destroyed alongside ours and they only exist because the Byrne’s have a use for them,” Niall objected

“What is that use?” Ronan asked.

“The Byrnes were left with mostly women and children—Omegas,” Fergus told them. “The men run guns for them up north, Belfast to Donegal.”

“How is that any help to us?”

“They can hide us while we do our own recon, prepare for what is to come,” Fergus replied, looking up at Olcan for his approval as Alpha.

“Our own recon?” Niall asked, eyebrows raised. “You are suggesting we go to Ireland and confront them on their own turf? That’s suicide.”

“I’m suggesting that we send out a small party to embed themselves within Clan Byrne to find out things firsthand,” Fergus replied, still watching Olcan for a response.

“Didn’t we already try that with spies?” Niall asked.

“Yes, but spies can’t bring together a bunch of families that we need to stand up for themselves. The battle is not between the Maguires and the McNallys. The battle is between the Maguires and everyone they’ve harmed. They broke up the families and taught them there would be further punishment if they defied their rule.”

“You think that we can go there and bring them around to reclaiming what was taken from them after all this time?” Olcan asked.

“I don’t know, but I can’t think of any other options that are on the table for us right now. We don’t have the numbers, and the only way to get them before they come for us is by rallying other families around our cause, eliminating the Maguires once and for all.”

“It’ll mean we have to take down Trill, first and foremost,” Olcan told him.

“Yes,” Fergus replied.

“I’ll do it,” Niall volunteered. “We can’t spend our lives looking over our shoulders like cowards.”

“You can’t. You’ll be brought to justice for taking out an Alpha in the old country. They play by different rules there. I’ll have to do it.”

“No. You have a family. You both have families,” Ronan replied. “Someone has to stay and keep people here safe. It should be you. You and Fergus have families. Niall and I don’t. Let us go and see what we see.”
My Clan in Ireland wanted to use me as a baby maker. To escape that fate, I agreed to go to America and spy on the Boston Bears.

“IRELAND, HUH? YOU DON’T look Irish.”

Niamh scowled at the man. She wanted to snatch her passport out of his hands, but it would only cause a hassle that she didn’t need right now. She was too exhausted, and time was too tight. She had to be in Boston by morning, and this was the last bus for the night.

She wondered what it was about people that made them generalize about everyone they encountered. No one in Ireland ever told her she didn’t look Irish, but in the brief time she’d been in America, she’d heard it a half dozen times. It’s as if they expected everyone to have red hair and freckles, wearing overalls with a pot of gold stuffed under their arm like they were on the run from a naughty leprechaun.

In fact, more people in Ireland looked like Niamh than looked like what these people imagined when they perceived of Irish norms. She had long black hair and deep brown eyes, with olive skin—what some might refer to as Black Irish due to the darker complexions they possessed than their fairer-skinned counterparts.

Many people were descended from Spaniards that had been prominent in certain parts of the island and possessed a warmer complexion. That was more normal for Ireland than what most imagined, but it didn’t stop people like this goon from expressing their ignorance about Irish culture.

“Nye amph? Nymph?” the man continued, looking up at her with a disgusting smile.

“It’s pronounced Neev,” she replied, irritated

“It’s not spelled right.”

“It’s Gaelic and it’s spelled right fine. Can I get me ticket already?”

“Sure, Neev.”

She ignored his mocking tone and waited for him to finish processing her bus ticket to Boston. She was too tired to argue with people about her name today. A six-hour flight from Dublin plus the hours making her way through security on one end and immigration on the other had left her exhausted and cranky. It would be nice to just stay in New York for a few nights and recover, but she didn’t have time for all that.

Instead, she was in line waiting for this moron to do his job. At least she had gotten there in time, though she was cutting it close. Maybe she could catch a nap during the night trek to her final destination. Then, she’d have a bit of time to kill in the morning before her appointment there. She was nervous about that. If it fell through, she’d have to work out something else. Going back to Dublin a failure wasn’t an option she could afford.

She was relieved when he finally handed her a ticket and a claim check for the large suitcase she’d been lugging since the airport, but she still watched as the bus pulled in and they began putting luggage into the lower hold. She could see her case being wheeled out on a trolley and placed inside while she waited in line with the other passengers. She noted the bus was fairly empty when she finally was allowed to board, so she was lucky enough to get a seat to herself where she could stretch out and get what sleep she could.

Though she woke up several times during the trip, she’d managed to rest a bit before disembarking in Boston. She waited for the driver to remove the luggage of those not continuing on and retrieved hers from him, wheeling it inside the bus station to look for a bathroom where she could freshen up.

Her watch was still on Dublin time, but by her calculations, it was nearly five a.m. Her appointment wasn’t until nine, and she couldn’t check into the hotel until two. It was going to be another long day. She managed to find a bathroom and check her appearance before reemerging.

“Is there a place nearby to get a bite?” she asked someone who looked like they were perhaps cleaning staff.

“Au Bon Pain opens in a few minutes. Other than that, you can head out of the terminal and there are all sorts of places nearby.”

“Good on ya,” Niamh replied.

“Are you trying to kill some time before a flight or another bus?” the woman asked.

“Aye. I am.”

“You can store your luggage for the day with the Greyhound folks if you like. It’s up that way, but it doesn’t open until seven.”

“Oh, Ta. Splendid, that,” Niamh replied with a smile, heading in the direction of the eatery she could see in the distance.

A couple hours later, she was full of pastry and coffee and had her bags stored. She navigated her way out of the terminal and did a bit of looking around before hailing a cab to take her to the address she’d been given for her interview, arriving ten minutes early, but okay with that. She paid the driver and looked around at the neighborhood in which she found herself, marveling at the sizes of the houses and the space around them.

CHAPTER ONE

Fergus

“I’ll have no son of mine involved in this shite,” Cathal McNally roared at his four sons, standing up to slam his fist down on the table before walking toward the small bar that sat to one side of the dining room. His limp was more pronounced today and he looked incredibly frail for a man barely in his sixties. An enemy would do well not to let that fool them, though. He might not be the man he used to be, but he was still plenty lethal.

“Alpha, I know you want us to keep our noses clean as much as possible, but we can’t just let this go on our turf,” Fergus replied.

The dissent was met with an angry glare. Their clan might have been decimated by their enemies in Ireland, leaving them as the only surviving members, but he was still their Alpha and did not like to be challenged, not even by his own son. Fergus sighed and tried a new tactic.

“Alpha, if we don’t do something about this, we’ll lose control. We can nary afford to have that happen. Let us at least just look into it and see what is happening. If it doesn’t affect us, we’ll leave it be.”

Cathal looked at him, studying him for a moment before looking to his brothers. None of them spoke. They were a force to be reckoned with out on the streets, but they weren’t so quick to cross their father. If not for him, they’d not even be here. He had managed to move four young boys out of Ireland before they met the same fate as their mother and fallen clan brothers. They did nothing without his go-ahead.

“And you three? Do you agree with your brother?” he asked them.

They nodded their heads up and down at his question, angering him further.

“Do ya have feckin’ mouths?” he barked at them.

“Aye, Alpha. We’ve spoken. We’re in agreement,” Olcan replied, speaking on behalf of them all.

“Fine. Do what you feel you must, but bring trouble on this house, and you’ll be regretting it.”

Fergus nodded and motioned for his brothers to follow him out, leaving their father to the nightly glass of Jameson he allowed himself. Thea, their old nanny who had remained on to help care for their father, smiled at them as they passed her in the hallway, waiting for their exit before joining their father in the living room. They each paused to kiss her on the cheek as they passed by. She smiled and left them to their business, having learned a long time ago that the less she knew, the better.

“Hannigan’s?” Fergus asked as they filed out the front door of their fathers’ home behind him, receiving a chorus of agreements.

They had been going to Hannigan’s Pub since before they were old enough to even get in. You didn’t get asked for ID when you were Irish Mafia, especially not if you belonged to one of the most feared families in Boston. They’d fled Dublin as boys, but they’d quickly become men on the tough streets of this city. No one with any good sense gave them any guff. They’d recruited and grown, but it was only the four of them and their father who made up the heart of The Boston Bears.

People scattered as they walked into the place twenty minutes later. They took their usual booth in a dark corner to one side of the club, ordering pints as they scanned the room for anyone who might be a problem. It was pretty quiet in there tonight. They relaxed, at least as relaxed as they ever got, and settled into their beers while they discussed the problem at hand.

“I talked to some of those drugged-out wankstains down at the docks today. Someone is fucking up the waters with shite meth,” Fergus told them.

“Who is it?” Niall asked.

Niall was the younger of the two middle children, but often mistaken for being older due to his size. He wasn’t quite as big as Fergus, but he was of a size that was impressive enough that men cleared out of his way when they saw him coming.

“Don’t know, but they’re gonna stop. Hit up your payrolls and find out. I’m not having that on our turf,” Fergus replied, pausing to finish off his pint and hold up the empty mug toward their server, swirling his finger about as a signal for refills. She was a regular server here and knew the rules. Don’t interrupt but be watchful for requests.

He noted the way Ronan, their youngest brother, eyed the server as she brought over a round of fresh beers and bent over to take their empty glasses. A good bit of her cleavage was visible down the front of the white button-up shirt she wore but failed to button up very far. She was a few years older than him, but when had that ever stopped a McNally Bear from claiming what he wanted.
She looked at her husband, his six two frame towering over her menacingly. She could remember when she had thought he was the most handsome, virile shifter in the pack; when she had loved him and believed they would spend a long and beautiful life together. They were long past that now.

“You said you had six people coming. Now, it’s twelve. How was I supposed to know that?” she almost whispered.

“You are supposed to be prepared for anything. You should have made something simpler, something that could be stretched or that you could quickly make more of if needed. There’s no way we can feed twelve people with, what is that even? A fucking pot roast?”

His dark hair was combed back to perfection, in stark contrast to the ugly, red face that now stared back at her with utter disdain and contempt. There was no pleasing him. There had not been any way to please him since the time they had been pronounced man and wife. It was a death sentence – the kiss of death. She was just hopeful that it would be her actual death at some point.

“I spent all day making this food. I thought you’d be happy,” she replied, her tone still muted compared to the way he was roaring at her.

“You thought? I doubt that. You never think about anything,” he yelled, picking up a nearby plate and throwing it, not at her, but close enough that it shattered against the cabinet near her head.

The sound was enough to wake the sleeping babies laying nearby in their cribs. She had moved the triplets downstairs to make it easier to tend to them and work on dinner without having to hike up and down the stairs. Exhaustion had already set in before she had even begun the day. Blane had not given her a moment of peace between feeding their triplets and pawing at her when she was barely recovered from having given birth a little over a month before.

“Great. Now, they’re going. What do you plan to do about them during our dinner party? How can you be a proper host with three screaming kids going in the background and having to whip a tit out constantly to feed one of them?”

“I’ve pumped enough milk to feed them for the night and the Taylor girls are coming over to take care of them. They’ll be upstairs with them during the party.”

“Great. More bitches in the house. Bad enough that I’m married to one who seems to just spit out more of them. Was it too much to ask for even just one son? Instead, I get three worthless girls. More Omegas, and not an Alpha in the bunch.”

Constance didn’t respond to the remark. There was little she could say that wouldn’t escalate the situation even further. Instead, she tried to neutralize the situation before he got even angrier. He hadn’t yet reached the point where he was physically abusive, but if his ever-increasing venom was any indication, it was only a matter of time. Given his disdain for both herself and their girls, how long before his mean streak spread to them as well?

“Well? What are you going to do about this huge cluster fuck you’ve created?”

She smiled, knowing there was nothing good to come from arguing with him. Glancing at the pot roast and then at the clock, she had an idea.

“Mashed potatoes. Gravy. We’ve got the instant kind. I’ll mix up a large batch of that and put thinner slices of the pot roast on top, instead of serving it alone. It’ll stretch what we have without looking skimpy.”

“Instant mashed potatoes. Nothing says class like that,” he said, turning and leaving without another word.

Constance took a deep breath and let it out slowly before retrieving the broom and dustpan to clean up the broken glass from the floor. She tried to push everything out of her mind as she started a pan of water and milk for the mashed potatoes and a separate one for the gravy.

The doorbell rang as she was headed to check on the triplets and she paused to answer it, grateful to find the three Taylor triplets. They weren’t unusual in the wolf pack as Omegas like herself sometimes had sextuplets or even octuplets, but they were unusual in the sense that they were completely identical.

“Ah . . . Kara, Lara, and Mara. Thank goodness. Come on in. You are lifesavers. If you could do me a favor and get the triplets upstairs, I’d be so happy.”

“Sure, Mrs. Michaels. Where are they?”

“In the living room in the portable crib.”

“What makes you think you qualify for promotion? Lots of people work hard, but that doesn’t mean they deserve a better position,” Maria, her supervisor, responded.

“I do. I’ve done everything asked of me and I’ve done it well. I’ve never been late and I’ve not had one single reprimand. Yet, newer and less experienced girls are promoted over me right and left.”

“Come on, Aileen. You know the answer to all of that. I can’t promote you.”

“Yes, you can.”

“No. I can’t, not after what your father did. Not only are you an Omega, but you are the daughter of a man who sold out his clan.”

“My father did not sell out his clan. He told the truth about an Alpha who burned down an entire village to hide his crimes.”

“I’m not going to argue ancient history with you. I’m just stating the facts.”

“I’m so sick of being treated like a second-class citizen in this clan. What does what my father did have to do with me? Why should I have to pay for something that I’m hardly old enough to even remember?”

“I don’t have the answer to that, but it’s your life. No one holds you to this clan. You can get out on your own or you can find another clan, if one will have you. Otherwise, will you please go back to your desk and do your job?”

“Sure,” Aileen replied from between clenched teeth.

She was twenty-three. She’d been working at the medical center for the past five years, since she had finished high school. Her finances hadn’t allowed her to attend college and she was lucky to have gotten a job at all. The only reason she’d been allowed to stay in the clan was because some of the elders felt sorry for her. The previous Alpha leader had not taken kindly to her father making accusations. He’d been exiled, leaving her and her siblings behind. The chain of events that followed his departure resulted in her being the lone family member to remain.

“You could always get married. You know, settle down and have kids. If you hold any value in this clan, the fact that you are an Omega buys you some consideration,” her best friend Cassie told her later that evening over dinner.

“I can’t think of anything that appeals to me less than to give up on a career and become some shifter’s baby factory,” Aileen said, rolling her eyes.

“Career? Is that what you think you have? You’re stuck behind a desk all day long taking customer service calls. It’s what you’ve been doing since you got there and it is what you’ll be doing until you retire.”

“Well, that’s uplifting.”

“I’m not trying to be cruel. I’m just reminding you of your position in this clan. You’re an Omega, which is bad enough, but you’re also from a disgraced family. You’re never getting anywhere in this clan, work or otherwise. Your only option is to serve the only purpose they think you are fit to do.”

“Hardly my only option. I’m capable of a lot more than opening my legs for some dude to fill me up with his spawn.”

“Good luck with whatever you think it is you are going to do then,” Cassie replied.

There was silence as Cassie took a sip of her wine and looked off into the distance. Aileen cursed herself for not thinking about what she was saying. Cassie was engaged to marry one of the current Alpha leader’s righthand shifters and become the mother of his children. She had just unwittingly insulted her in an effort to defend her own actions.

“God, Cassie. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that you are settling for less or anything like that. I’m happy for you. It’s what you want and that’s great, but it’s just not for me. That’s all.”

“No offense taken,” Cassie said, turning her gaze back toward her, but she could see the hurt in her friend’s eyes.

“Do you want to split a dessert?” Aileen asked, trying to lighten the dark mood that seemed to be settling between them.

“No. I think I’ll call it a day and get back home. We’ll talk tomorrow,” she said, tossing some cash out on the table for her half of the meal.

“Let me get this,” Aileen protested, picking it up and trying to hand it back to her.

“Nah. I’ve got mine,” Cassie said, grabbing her purse and tossing her hand up in a gesture of goodbye before heading to the exit.

Aileen sat, watching her disappear out the door, and frowned. They were growing further apart every day. They had been friends for a long time now, but with one of them determined to further their career and the other about to get married, they were going in very different directions.

“You say that as if you have a choice in the matter,” Cullen replied.

“I do have a choice.”

He chuckled, but it wasn’t the sound of an amused man. It was dark, sinister. It was something to fear; the man behind it was cruel and dangerous. Her body felt like ice, as if she might never be warm again, but she stood her ground.

“I’m going to let you continue thinking that, for today. I’ve somewhere else to be and don’t have time to deal with your insolence. We’ll talk about it when I return.”

Kelly didn’t respond. She stood there, frozen. He stepped toward her and she flinched as he kissed her on the cheek. It felt like a kiss of death, as if this were the mafia and he was marking her for dead, but what he had in mind was a fate far worse than death−at least that is the way she saw things.

She didn’t move from the spot on which she was glued until she heard his footsteps finish making their way to her front door, waiting for the tell-tale croaking as it opened and closed. It was only then that she let out the breath she had been holding since the moment he had leaned in to kiss her. He was gone.

“You’re an idiot,” a voice said from behind her.

Her heart dropped into her stomach and then lurched upward again, beating irregularly before returning to its normal pace. She took another deep breath, bringing in more oxygen to make up for the previous denial of constant air flow and tried to calm herself before turning toward Muriel, who stood in the doorway behind her.

“What makes me an idiot?” she replied, keeping her emotions in check.

“Any girl in this town would kill to be with the alpha male of the pack and you’re just shitting it away like it’s nothing.”

“They can have him.”

“Perhaps, but he doesn’t want them. He wants you. Do you really think he is going to take no for an answer?”

“What else can he do if that is my response?”

Muriel laughed and looked at her as if she were insane.

“You’re kidding, right? He’s the alpha of this pack and there is no saying “no.” You’ll not be welcome anywhere and no other bear here will touch you. No one is going to go up against the most powerful shifter in this pack just to be with a lowly omega shifter.”

The distinct air of condescension was unmistakable. Muriel was a full-fledged bear shifter. They all saw omega shifters like Kelly as inferior, which they were, in terms of raw power. Their only real value in the pack was to the males, who often selected them over the much stronger female shifters based on their ability to have a large number of cubs.

Whereas someone like Muriel could only have a few cubs at a time, an omega shifter like Kelly could have ten or more. Alphas were especially fond of them as a large family was more power for their pack. Cullen had only two cubs by his first wife, who had died while having them. The cubs had subsequently been killed in a fight with a rival shifter pack. So, now he was looking at a late start on a new beginning.

“He doesn’t love me,” she told Muriel.

“Love? Since when did that matter in this pack?”

It was true. Female omegas were often mated not only to their spouse but to a number of pack members considered to be of superior stock, in order to bolster the number of cubs of strong bearing. Since they followed basically the same biology as regular non-shifting bears, they could become pregnant by multiple shifters and have a litter every six to eight months.

“I’m not some sort of baby incubator. I won’t be.”

“Tough luck, kid. Making babies is what omegas were born to do,” Muriel said dismissively, disappearing back down the hallway.

Kelly was furious, but she wasn’t sure if it was because of what Muriel had said or the knowledge that she was right, at least as far as this pack was concerned. She went to the kitchen and got a glass of water, standing at the sink to drink it while she tried to sort all of this out in her head.

Muriel was right about one thing: She had no future here. If she married Cullen, she would be pregnant within the first weeks and she would stay that way as often as it could be managed between litters. He would loan her out to other members of the pack. He would fuck other shifters, perhaps humans, too, behind her back. There was no love in this equation. They hadn’t even dated in any real capacity.

If she didn’t marry him, she might suffer the same fate without even the benefit of status. As the alpha’s wife, she would be revered, at least by others in the pack. She’d have everything she could ask for in regard to a home and material possessions. Otherwise, she’d just be an outcast and a whore, as she had no doubt the bears in this pack would take what they wanted by force.

No matter what she did, it was wrong. There was no pleasing Carter and she had long stopped trying. Now, it was just a matter of keeping the peace as much as was even possible with him, but there were times that was just impossible. Like today.

There had been a time when she couldn’t wait for her husband to come home, craved his touch, but those days had passed them by when the affairs had begun. She had excused the first one, overlooked the second, and come to no longer care by the third one.

Every day, she considered leaving him, but something always seemed to stop her. She couldn’t quite put her finger on what nagging little sensation kept her here, in this misery she shared with such a narcissistic, selfish man.

“How many times are we going to have this conversation?” Jocelyn groaned.

“As many times as it comes up,” Carter barked back at her.

Jocelyn turned and began walking away, only to find herself being grabbed by the arm and yanked roughly backward. The liquor on his breath was pungent. He’d been out drinking all night with his boys and turned up back here smelling like strippers and whiskey. It was nothing new. The escalation in physical violence, however, was a recent addition. Flinging his hand from her arm, she jerked away and glared at him, her gaze full of venom.

“You smell like a fucking whorehouse,” she spat at him.

“So?”

“I guess you missed the part of our marriage ceremony where it mentioned forsaking all others.”

“I guess you missed the part of the deal where you’re supposed to be fruitful and multiply.”

The first time he had talked so callously about her inability to conceive, she had felt wounded. Now, it didn’t bother her in the least. He couldn’t hurt her anymore. She had wanted children at one time. They had tried so hard to get pregnant after the first year of their marriage, but it had never happened for them.

Jocelyn had been tested, submitting to any test the doctors would do in hopes they would find some way to fix whatever was broken inside her, but they could never find anything wrong. Still, nothing had been successful. Instead, they recommended that he be tested. He had refused, at first, saying he couldn’t possibly be the problem. He had gotten his high school girlfriend pregnant years ago, but she had miscarried. His claim was that while he was not a father, he was perfectly able to do his part.

“Please, Carter. That was ten years ago. Let’s just rule it out.”

In the end, he had agreed to see his own doctor and get tested, eventually learning that he had no issues with mechanics or sperm count. Whatever the reason was for them not getting pregnant was a mystery, so they just kept trying and hoping. Jocelyn even began to take fertility treatments to increase their chances. All had failed and now, so had their marriage.

“You’re a real bastard when you drink,” she said calmly before turning to walk away, but he wasn’t having it.

Jocelyn wasn’t prepared for the physical altercation that followed. He had gotten a bit more hands on lately, grabbing her roughly and sometimes shaking her, but now he had escalated to full on assault. She tried to defend herself against his blows, pulling away and falling down in the hallway. The result was a sharp kick in the side with his wingtip shoes.

“No,” she screamed, summoning every ounce of rage within herself and coming up off the floor unexpectedly, catching him by surprise. She was shocked by her own strength as her arm seemed to take on a life of its own, shooting upward and clocking him squarely in the nose.

Water poured from his eyes as he grunted in pain. Blood began flowing down his face as he stumbled backward, away from her.

“You fucking bitch!” he shouted, his voice sounding quite high pitched as it whistled through his impaired nasal passages.

She was shocked at how quickly he regained his bearings and lunged for her, trying to grab hold of her hair and pull her down, but she ducked to one side, avoiding his grasp. There was a darkness in his eyes, pure menace. It was something she hadn’t seen before.

She didn’t know what he would do next and had no intention of finding out. Instead, she sprang for her handbag that lay on a nearby counter and snatched it toward her, running for the front door while trying to fish out her keys. Her hands shook as she fumbled across them and yanked them free, dropping them on the front stoop and snatching them up again.

Inside the car, she tried to steady her hand as she started it up and began backing it out of the driveway. She had no idea where she was going, but she knew she couldn’t stay here with him. Still, she sat there frozen, until she saw him running out the front door toward her. His nose had flooded the front of his shirt with blood. It was enough to jar her from her temporary paralysis.
