Since I was a young girl, I've been hidden away so I won't be claimed by a monster.

At the age of ten, I was declared tainted by a prophet. Doomed to one day bear a mark that will connect me to a vampire.

My parents abandoned me.
Leaving me at the mercy of their church—the Order of Saint Benedict.
For nearly a decade, I was forced to live underground and subjected to countless cruelties.

But everything changes the day a priest takes pity and rescues me.

While on the run, the cursed mark appears on my skin.
And I become one of the few women in the world a vampire can turn.

One night, I wake up in the arms of a monster claiming to be my fated.

With black hair, sharp cheekbones, and lips begging to be kissed, he looks like the Devil incarnate.
And promises me an eternity full of endless bliss…

If I’m willing to be forever bound to him.

Wanted is a dark vampire romance

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

RAPHAEL

The Future

Alena shoves my hands off her and snaps, “You are not the answer to all my problems!”

Then she starts to angrily stomp off.

Bullshit, I think to myself as I pounce on her, not letting her get away.

Jerking her into me, my mouth drops to her ear. “Want to bet?”

I push the memory of us kissing through the bond and feel her tremble against me.

“Bet what?” she asks, her voice coming out breathless.

Fighting back the urge to exert the full power of my vampiric will, I purr into her ear, “I can fix it all. All the pain. All the misery you suffer…”

I turn her in my arms so she can see my face. She needs to know everything I can offer. Not the lies she grew up believing.

Bending her back, I lean over her. “I can make it all go away.”

Staring into her eyes, my body aches with the pent-up need to finally feel complete. “I can fill the rest of your life with endless pleasures.”

She’s so close to giving in, I can taste it. But I must tread carefully.

If I force or manipulate her into immortality, she’ll hate me for eternity.

She chokes out, “How?”

What I’m offering is tempting and she wants to believe me. Even if she doesn’t know how to trust me yet.

Too many people in her past have betrayed her.

But I am the one who will always protect her. The one willing to sacrifice everything for her.

Even my life, if it comes to it.

Dipping my head closer, I breathe the answer against her lips. “Give yourself to me fully.”

Her eyes soften, and I can’t resist the impulse to tuck her hair behind her ear.

If only she could feel how I feel. If she opened the bond completely, allowing herself to feel me, she’d know I will forever love and cherish her.

I will give her everything she’s never had.

Wishing I could shatter the damn thing myself, I say, “Break down the wall between us and you’ll never need it again.”

Her reaction is immediate and surprising. Almost as if she’s under some kind of compulsion…

Shouting in my face, she shoves hard at my chest, trying to free herself. “No!”

But I don’t let her push me away this time.

She can’t keep running from the truth.

This wall she’s put up, blocking half of our connection, needs to come down for both our sakes.

Trying to help her see reason, I say gently. “You have to, my love, if you ever want to experience true happiness.”

She shakes her head back and forth in denial. “It will kill me.”

Images of everything she’s longed to do over the past decade flash through her mind. Everything the Order denied her by keeping her trapped underground like a rat in a cage.

She longs for mortal freedom as much as I long for her.

But fate has already decided where this will end.

My determination strengthening, I know how to convince her.

Tightening my hold, I croon, “All those things you want… Everything you desire…”

Taking control of her dream, I weave together everything I glimpsed in her mind around us.

The grass she wants to run through. The flowers she’s longed to smell. The tall trees reaching for the sky.

And the soft breeze teasing at her hair.

She sways on her feet, but my hold keeps her from falling over.

“I will give them to you,” I vow.

She twists in my arms and stares at the grass swaying before her in wonder.

Turning her back around, I nudge her chin up so she can see what she’s yearned the most for.

A large, open sky splashed with red, pink, and orange stretching above us.

How did he know I wanted this? she thinks to herself.

Wanting her to understand how closely we’re already connected, I answer, “I’m inside you.”

Icy dread flows through the fragile bond on her end.

“You can read my thoughts?” she asks.

Her dread settling in my own stomach for a moment, I hesitate before admitting, “Yes.”

Her muscles tense, as if she means to run.

Crushing her against me, I remind her, “You gave me permission.”

“When?!” she gasps.

I brush my lips purposely against her ear and enjoy how even the slightest touch from me affects her. “When you begged for more pleasure.”

She jerks her head away, but I follow.

Exhaling, I caress her with my breath. “Everything you think, I hear. Everything you feel, I feel.”

Her fear of me surges through the bond, threatening to overwhelm my control.

I pull back and look at her face. “Because you’re the other half of my soul.”

Shaking her head in denial, she thinks to herself, That’s impossible. People don’t share souls.

Anger floods me, further testing the limits of my patience.

That she would still fight against what’s between us after everything I’ve shown her pushes me to the very edge.

Reflecting my emotions, the sky begins to darken and fills with clouds.

“I assure you, it’s very possible,” I growl.
They say you Reap what you sow and now I’m in over my head.

Unable to bear my abusive marriage one second longer… I go on the run with my infant son without a penny to my name. When I’m offered a job to spy on the most notorious crime family in the city, I jump on it. Willing to sell my soul to keep my son fed and safe. But Jude catches me in the act and becomes completely obsessed with me. Now he’s forcing his way into my life. Claiming my son and I belong to him. He’s so psychotic, he believes we were brought together by destiny… And plans to make me his wife. With or without my consent.

Possessing Eden is a standalone dark romance in the Disciples series.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Eden

“What I do with my money is my own damn business!” Kyle roars, his face blood red with fury.

The glass he was holding shatters against the wall a split-second later, narrowly missing my head.

I flinch as whatever he was drinking splatters against my left side.

Chest heaving, the veins in his throat pulsing, Kyle clenches his fists and stalks angrily towards me.

Instinctually, I cower, pressing back against the wall.

And hate myself a little bit more for it.

As Kyle’s big legs quickly eat up the distance between us, I loathe myself for putting myself in this situation.

I should have known better. Multiple people warned me I was making a mistake when I agreed to marry him. That he was hot-headed and prone to temper tantrums. But I was young, naïve, and fucking stupid. Looking for an escape from my shitty home situation.

He offered me hope. Stability. A way out of a hole I thought I would never be able to climb out of on my own.

He promised to always protect me and take care of me. To love me and be by my side, whatever may come.

He pretty much sold me the fucking Brooklyn Bridge and my dumbass bought it.

I knew better. I fucking knew better, and still I fell for it.

Everyone in my life has let me down one way or another.

Yet, somehow, I thought he would be different.

“If you don’t like it, you can get a fucking job!” Kyle screams in my face as he reaches me.

Cringing, I focus on resisting the urge to bring my hands up to shield myself because I know it will only make him angrier.

Kyle is a big guy. He’s got at least five inches on me and a ton of muscle to go with it. He’s intimidating when he’s not angry. When he’s furious, he’s downright terrifying.

His fist slams against the wall beside me and I nearly jump out of my skin.

“I’m fucking tired of you nagging me to death!” he roars, almost blowing out my eardrums and spraying me with spit.

Wild, rage-filled eyes locking on mine, he dares me to give him a reason to hurt me. To push this further.

I know from past experiences that any little thing I do will be used as an excuse for his actions.

So I resort to doing what I do best.

I force myself to do nothing.

To feel nothing.

No anger. No hurt.

I flip the switch I found inside me long ago, turning everything off.

The fear, the need to survive, the hopelessness.

Whatever little love I ever had for him…

It’s all gone.

Tucked away in a little box to suffer through later.

Utterly empty of everything that makes me a person, I stare back at him.

While his eyes beg me for it. Beg me to give him what in his mind must be permission to go to the next step.

Anything can and will be used as an excuse.

Breathing too hard. Twitching just a little bit.

Even blinking can set him off.

When it finally dawns on him that I have no plans of talking or fighting back, some of the fire in his eyes dies down and his mouth pulls into a scowl.

I can practically see the wheels starting to turn inside his head as he tries to think of a way to get me to give him what he wants.

He can’t just hit me. Oh no, that will not do. He needs it to somehow be my fault, otherwise he’d have to take the blame for being an asshole.

And if there’s one thing he’s incapable of doing, it’s taking the blame for anything.

Personal responsibility doesn’t exist in his vocabulary.

Nothing is ever his fault.

He never makes a mistake.

If things go wrong because of something he’s done or the choices he’s made, it’s either really someone else’s fault or the universe is out to get him.

In his mind, he’s practically a god. Infallible and perfect.

While in reality, he’s a fucking loser. A loser that will never get anywhere in life because he’s incapable of learning from his fuckups.

Can’t learn from them if you never make them…

Huffing and puffing, he makes a grunting noise and leans into me. “Did you fucking hear me?”

The question is bait and there’s no fucking way I’m walking into the trap.

Not again.

In the past, I let him suck me in. Let him send me over the edge with him. His fury sending me down a spiral of agonizing misery.

I used to stupidly believe I could reason with him. That I could calm him down with an apology or a little logic.

I didn’t understand it back then. I didn’t understand that he rages at me and hurts me because he wants to. Not because he’s genuinely upset over anything I’ve said or done.

Trying to defend myself is futile and a complete waste of breath.

He wants to use me as his verbal and physical punching bag because that’s all I am to him.

Lucifer and his merry band of killers rule the streets of Garden City. Possessive and obsessive, they take the women they want knowing no one will stop them.

But the fun doesn't stop once they reach their happily ever afters.

Take a peek at their lives between the books.

Includes five short stories set in the Disciples series.

Before God Himself - Lucifer
Ho, Ho, Ho - Andrew
Run Lily - Lily
Promise - Abigail
The Bad Man - James

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Ho, Ho, Ho

Andrew

“You’re the one who wanted to go to the law firm,” John says heatedly to Simon.

“I wanted to go to the law firm, yes, but…” Simon snarls as he looks around the pickup truck we’re all crammed in. “I’d prefer to not smell of dirt and animal feces.”

“My truck doesn’t smell like dog shit, asshole,” John growls back.

Looking over to James, I shrug my shoulders at him as I take a deep whiff of where we’re sitting. “Smells kinda like motor oil to me.”

“Smells like domestication to me,” James smirks before he moves a Lego plane from under his ass.

“Fuck you, Simon. You’re next, James. And Andrew… You’re good,” John grumbles then jerks his steering wheel to the side as he dodges yet another snow drift.

“Heathens and barbarians, the lot of you,” Simon mutters and pulls a file out of his briefcase.

Peering out into swirling white flakes of snow pelting down on us, I grumble to them all, “This fucking trip better be worth it.”

Amy was pissed when I said I had to leave in the middle of Christmas decorating. Not that I was on the roof, putting lights up or anything. That was last week. No, she’s pissed because I won’t be there to help garland the whole fucking stairway and banisters.

It also doesn’t help that I’m not available to help hunt down a decent fake Christmas tree, either. Poor Abigail’s body decided this was the year to break out in hives around our Douglas fir.

I’ve never seen Abigail throw a tantrum before… She’s a good girl. Daddy’s little girl. But when she thought there’d be no Christmas tree this year…

It took us two hours to calm her down, she was so upset.

It’s three weeks before Christmas and two weeks before school lets out for the break. I’m sitting in the backseat of John’s pickup truck in a suit and tie with James sitting beside me, pissed as a motherfucker at John. Simon’s been bitching like a little school girl about dirt and John’s antagonizing the fuck out of him. I would have paid to switch places with Jude right now, wherever the fuck he’s at in the world.

But no, I get to babysit these fuckwits for the day.

To be honest, I wouldn’t even trade places with Jude if I could.

I’d rather be home with my boy and girls.

Leaving them behind is getting harder and harder every day.

Goddammit, I’m as domesticated as can be.

This shit really better be worth it.

“What’s the deal with the law firm we’re heading to?” I ask Simon as I lean up to see what he’s looking at.

Huffing loudly, he hands me a file showing a shit ton of numbers that have been circled in red and bright orange.

I can’t make heads or tails out of all the little circles and notations, so I ask, “Did Evie or Abi get ahold of your markers again?”

“No,” he snips at me. “Though it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve done that. Those red circles are notations of missing funds or balance transfer inaccuracies.”

“A couple of hours here and a couple of dollars there…” I say, looking at the sheet. “This is over a week. Probably a few hundred dollars total.”

“Now ask me how many sheets I have like that for the last three months,” Simon says.

“How many?” John asks.

“I’d say you have a sheet like this for every week, and I’m betting each week doesn’t add up to a large amount. But combined, it’s enough to add up to a huge amount,” I say, handing Simon the sheet back.

“Exactly,” Simon says. “Over thirty thousand over the last six months. And past that, I need full accurate logs of every billable hour that’s occurred. When we first hired this firm, these little charges weren’t as prevalent. Now they seem to be speeding up.”

“So someone’s bilking a ton of money out of us under the guise of billable hours,” James says.

“Yes,” Simon says with a nod of his head.

“And they either think we don’t give a shit or they’re ramping up for a final payday before they split,” I say.

“That’s my thought, but I need to figure out who’s doing it and why,” Simon says.

“We’re all in suits… I’m taking it this isn’t a head-busting trip,” Johnathan grumbles as he tugs at the tie around his neck.

“If this becomes that type of trip, you have your guns. Use them only if necessary. We’ll be bringing the responsible party back to the warehouse for Lucifer to greet,” Simon says.

He’s got a point. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to torture and cap a fucker inside a law firm in the middle of broad daylight.

Johnathan slows the truck down to a middling crawl as we come up to a red light. I look around again at all the snow and icy shit being dumped on us.
Happily Ever Afters are forever…
But in the Disciple’s world, the fun and danger never stops.

Includes four new short stories:
The Trip – Johnathan
A Work Thing – James
Promise Me – Gabriel
Initiation – Amanda

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

The Trip

Johnathan

The phone ringing at three-thirty in the morning shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it does. I don’t know exactly what I was dreaming but it was good. The raging hard-on stuck firmly between Beth’s juicy asscheeks begs to be used.

“Fuck,” I grunt quietly.

“Who’s calling now?” Beth slurs, coming out of her deep sleep.

Reaching over to my phone, I look at the number, hoping it’s something I can ignore. But the private caller has their number blocked.

Rolling away from Beth, I say, “I gotta take this call, babe. Go back to sleep.”

“Mmmkay, be safe,” she murmurs before I hear her quiet, heavy breathing.

Sliding out of bed, I quickly head towards the hallway and watch as the call stops and immediately begins to ring again.

“What the fuck?” I growl at the phone.

No one should be able to call me from a private line. Simon’s got our phones set up pretty damn good.

Pushing the connect button as soon as I enter the hallway, I say, “Who the fuck is this?”

An impatient Simon comes on to the line. “Meet me at the airport in forty-five minutes. Leave the phone at home, I’ll have one for you. Bring your full load out but wear street clothes.”

The line disconnects before I have a chance to ask a single fucking question. With it being a private number, I can’t even call the fucker back.

Shit.

Beth’s going to fucking kill me. Tomorrow is the Fourth of July, and we’re supposed to bring all the beer to Andrew’s party.

The simple fact that Simon said meet me and not the crew or anyone else makes me want to call a couple of the other guys to figure out what the fuck is going on.

But I know the rules.

We do what we’re told, and fucking around, asking questions, can get us all killed.

Like a good fucking soldier, I do as I’m asked and move back into the room. The airport is thirty minutes away. I don’t have time to do much beyond getting dressed and hitting the bathroom.

Dressed in the dirtiest jeans I have, which isn’t nearly as dirty as my clothes used to be now that Beth has me looking almost respectable, I head out of my walk-in closet.

There, in the bedroom, sleeping so peacefully is the love of my life. God, what that woman does to me with just one glimpse of her bare shoulder.

Hell, I really am tempted to call Andrew and see if he can take on whatever job Simon and Lucifer have cooked up for me.

The phone is almost out of my pocket before I remember the private number and order to leave this phone here.

Beth is going to shit a brick when she sees it still on my nightstand.

Walking to the side of the bed, I pull the sheet and blanket up past her shoulder and tuck her in. She’s so fucking beautiful I can barely contain myself around her on a normal day, but right now something compels me to kiss her head.

“Mmm, back already?” she asks sleepily.

“Getting ready to leave, Beth,” I say quietly. “Gotta leave the work phone here. I’ll be back as soon as possible.”

Her eyes pop open. “Why?”

Going from barely awake to pushing herself up into a sitting position, she looks me directly in my eyes.

“Why are you leaving your phone here?” she asks again.

“Fuck.” I sigh and pull her into my arms. “Got a call and I gotta work, babe.”

Pulling me into her arms, she kisses my lips hard before pulling back and resting her forehead against mine.

“Promise to come back?” she asks, and I hear a slight tremor in her voice.

I hug her tight for a moment. “I promise.”

Standing up from the bed, I move away before either of us thinks about how sometimes promises aren’t shit in my world.

“Love you, princess booty.” I smirk at her with a wink.

The pillow she flings at my retreating back makes me chuckle.

“I hate that pet name,” she whispers before I hear her flop back on the bed.

“I know.” I silently close the bedroom door behind me.

Walking down the hall, I stop to look in Charlie’s room. He’s sleeping soundly, which is one the happiest things I can think of.

His night terrors and sleep paralysis were horrific the first few months living here. There were deep, black circles under his eyes, and he’d tremble if someone spoke too loud or slammed a door on accident.

Those months were hard on us all, especially Charlie. I’ve never held a kid before him, and the violent way his body would sob still causes my very being to ache at the thought.

Maxine’s head pops up from Charlie’s stomach. Her ears prick up as she watches me for a long moment. She’s been one of the saving graces in this home. Both her and Beth. I like to think eventually Charlie and me would have made it through the darkness without those two, but it would have been a hell of a lot harder.

Squelch.

Thump.

The sound is as rhythmic as a heartbeat, providing the harmony of this moment as the sun rises in the east.

Thump.

Squelch.

Thump.

Lifting my free hand up, I slam my fist against the doorframe of the townhouse and listen to it shudder.

Answer the door, Chloe.

I know you can hear me.

Let me in.

Beyond this flimsy barrier, I know she’s in there, listening to the thudding of my fist.

I can hear her breath cracking, breaking, as she whispers little invocations to ward herself from my evil.

Thump.

Squelch.

Thump.

Each sound matches the beating of the heart that calls to me from inside her chest. Rhythmic, slightly elevated, but steady and strong.

But it’s not just her blood that calls to me, beckoning me with the wicked harmony of a siren’s song…

It’s the scent of her coming to age three hours ago.

The scent is as intoxicating as it is damning.

She’s ready for me now.

Chloe’s body is ready for what her Order calls the Profane Gift.

Damn the Order of Saint Benedict. May they rot in their eternal salvation.

Thump.

Squelch.

Thump.

This is fucking madness. She knows she’s mine. There is no other way for this to end.

“Chloe,” I say with a low thrum in my voice, speaking the words out loud now. “Open the door, let me come in.”

Silence.

Silence so thick it reminds me of the catacombs in the undergrounds of Paris.

“Please…” a gurgled plea comes from the body I’ve been slapping against the side of this shitty brick home. “Stop…”

Thump.

The man groans and quiets.

His pallid skin is shining brighter now. I can see the lifeforce leaving his body as we both wait for Chloe to accept the gift I’ve brought for her ascension.

What a poor fucking gift it will be if it dies before she turns.

This time the thump is harder against the brick.

“Open the door, Chloe.” I try to withhold the snarl in my voice, but I can tell I fail by the way her heartbeat picks up.

She’s in a bathroom in the middle of the house. There’s a dripping faucet that wasn’t completely shut off echoing in the same room.

That’s an old trick.

The Order knows many ways to confound one of my kind, but they never work exactly right when a fated enters the equation. Dripping water is supposed to help conceal the heartbeat of a human, especially if one of the Order is continually blessing the water.

That is not the case here.

Chloe is the only one in the house, huddled in the corner of her bathroom shower, curtains drawn as if to ward me from seeing her.

I feel heat slowly building between the blades of my shoulders.

The sun will be fully up soon, and I’ll be forced to leave her.

The slam of the body into the brick is much louder than before.

“Hear me,” I murmur low and soft to Chloe. “Hear my words. I know you can hear me this way. My strengths, my gifts flow through our connection when we’re this close. Did the Order tell you that? Did they warn you of this temptation?”

There’s a rustling and the sound of hands moving against skin. She’s covering her ears now. She’s fighting the pull she feels to our destiny. I like the thought of my delicate Chloe being such a fighter, but not right fucking now.

“You hear me,” I continue to speak in soft, soothing tones. “You hear me, and you hear the heartbeat of the gift I’ve brought to you.”

The invocations to her Order’s patron Saint Benedict grow louder. She hears the heartbeat as well as I do, it calls to the thirst inside her body. Each thud of the valves opening calls to her like a loud drumbeat.

“Open. The. Door.” I punctuate each word with a slam of the man’s body against the brick wall.

Each time I thump the body against the wall, I hear her shuddering inside that tiny bathtub. The palms of her hands pressed tightly against her ears to block out the sounds of my gift.

She’s being unreasonable right now. Entirely stubborn and bullheaded. I like strong women, but not when the sun is about to come up and ruin this whole experience.

“I’ve waited twenty years, Chloe,” I say before slamming the soon-to-be lifeless body against the wall.

The snap of a collarbone causes Chloe to shrink in on herself.

We’re not close enough for me to feel her emotions, but I know she’s fighting her true self. Her indoctrination has been thoroughly drilled into that beautiful mind. The Order truly destroys all free thought and will. It forces lies and death among the most pure, the most devout.

Lies. Every single one of those damnable scriptures they preach and pound into their disciples… all of them are lies.

Thump.

Squelch.

Thump.

Splatter.

“Fuck,” I snarl so hard I can feel my chest rumble.

The brains oozing down the side of the wall make the whole fucking gift useless.

Blood.

She needs the blood of a living being if she wants a smoother transition.
Alex:
Life’s been pretty damn good to me. As the reigning middleweight champion, I’ve got money, power and fame. Not to mention a surplus of women willing to jump into my bed. All in all, I’ve got few complaints. I’m just living the dream… then Christy falls into my lap.
She’s young, vulnerable, and innocent. And she has enough on her that plate that she doesn’t need any grief from an old bastard like me. But she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on.
I can’t stop myself from wanting her, even though there’s more than a decade between us. I’m trying hard to keep my hands to myself, but she’s proving to be a temptation too great to resist…

Christy:
The moment I celebrated my eighteenth birthday I became broke and homeless. Driven from the only home I’ve ever known by my crazy stepbrother — I was lost, just trying to survive, but determined to make it.
Alex stumbled upon me in my darkest hour, and he’s taken me into his home. He’s given me food, shelter and a fighting chance.
Living with him though, I can’t stop myself from falling for him. But he looks at me like I’m a little kid that needs to be protected.
He thinks I’m too young, but I’m old enough to know that I want him to be both my first and my last.
Breaking Beast is a HEA, standalone MMA/Bad Boy romance with a dominant alpha hero and a young heroine trying to make her way in the world. Some content intended for mature readers.
The lights in my house are on. I can see through the windows my stepbrother, Travis, pacing around, talking into his cellphone as he gets ready to leave for the night.

The street is quiet, the crickets are chirping, and there’s a full moon out tonight.

How did this happen? How did I get here? I wonder as I huddle deeper into my hoodie, wrapping my arms tightly around my body.

The muscles in my back and thighs are beginning to ache. I shift my position, trying to relieve some of the tension, but the pavement is hard and unforgiving.

How did I let him force me out of my own home? I sigh and wonder where the hell I’m going to sleep tonight.

Three days ago, I turned eighteen. And three days ago, I essentially became homeless.

Travis didn’t kick me out. No, if anything, he’s anxiously waiting for me to return...

So he can have his way with me.

I can’t go home now and expect to be safe. I can’t sleep in my own bed or feel comfortable in the room I’ve grown up in—the room I’ve slept in my entire life.

Because of him.

Because in his sick and twisted mind, now that I’m eighteen I’m legal. And now that I’m legal he thinks I’m fair game.

I have no one to protect me. No one to keep him off me.

Or kick his ass.

My mother passed away from ovarian cancer two years ago. My stepfather pretty much checked out on life when she passed.

I’m completely on my own now. It’s survive or die.

Come on, come on. What’s the holdup?

Travis is usually gone by now.

My shift at Burger Bells ended an hour ago. I think I’ve been out here, crouching behind this rust bucket, for thirty minutes or more.

My damn feet are starting to fall asleep.

Travis pauses in front of the living room window and yanks the curtain to the side. I jerk backwards and press myself up against the car, hoping he didn’t see me.

Even from here, across the street, I can hear him angrily cursing. He’s probably just as pissed as I am that his ride is running late.

My heart pounds behind my ribs. I don’t know what the hell I’ll do if he does see me.

Probably run and hide.

Off in the distance I hear the sound of an engine revving. A few moments later a car roars down the street.

“’Bout fucking time,” Travis curses angrily, the front door banging behind him.

“Quit your bitching and just get in the car,” one of his lowlife friends snaps out.

I peek around the tail end of the rust bucket and watch Travis climb into the passenger seat of a green tricked out Neon.

His door shuts, and just above the loud rock music I can hear him and his friends hooting and hollering about all the fun they’re going to have tonight.

The engine of the car revs loudly and then they take off, roaring down the street.

I lean back and slump against the car in relief. He’s gone, finally.

Still, I remain in my hiding spot for a couple more minutes, just in case.

When I’m sure the coast is clear, I climb to my feet. Brushing my legs and butt off, my knees ache with pain.

I stomp my feet a couple of times to get the blood flowing again then sling my backpack over my shoulder and cross the street.

Reaching the front door of my house, I check the knob and it turns easily. Asshole left it unlocked.

I walk inside and my nose is immediately assaulted by the stinging smell of cheap beer.

My stepfather, Herb, must be home and no doubt he’s drunk again.

I make a beeline for the living room, feeling the need to check in on him. I find him passed out in his faded recliner with an empty beer bottle dangling from his hand.

He didn’t even bother to change out of his dirty work clothes. He works in construction so he often comes home with his jeans covered in dirt and his boots caked with mud.

I watch him for a couple of minutes just to make sure he’s breathing. His head is tipped back and his mouth is wide open but he’s not snoring.

It would be so easy to be angry at him for all of this. If he’d just stop drinking and pay attention to what’s going on, I know none of this would be happening.

I know if he truly knew what has been going on, I’d have his protection. In the past, he’s always been there for me, he’s always had my back.

He’s a decent man, but the death of my mother completely destroyed him.

He first started drinking in hiding when she was originally diagnosed. Sometimes I’d wake up in the middle of the night to hear him stumbling into a wall or crying loudly in the bathroom.
No, not animals. Pets. Isn’t that what that Russian man called us after he killed Lindsey?

His pets.

But we’re not even that in the eyes of these men.

Since the night my friends and I were brazenly grabbed out of a parking lot and shoved into the back of a van, I’ve learned we are simply flesh.

Warm flesh that is easily forced to move, bend, and break.

And just as easily discarded.

“Move it! Keep it moving!” another man yells from behind us, and without warning I’m pushed forward.

My toes bump into the heels of the red-haired woman in front of me and we both nearly go down in a heap of naked limbs.

Only Amanda’s death grip on me keeps me from dropping to the concrete floor.

Catching my balance, I quickly grab the elbow of the woman in front of me to help steady her, and then suddenly Amanda bumps into me with a yelp as we’re both pushed forward again.

“Backs against the wall! Get ‘em up against the wall!” the guy with the rifle yells, his words cracking like thunder over the small, fearful whimpers echoing around me.

Then he shoves the woman closest to him to show he means business.

The other women in front of me scramble to obey the order as the armed man works his way down the line, pushing and shoving. But I can’t move with the way Amanda’s fingers are digging into the flesh above my hips.

“Amanda,” I whisper urgently and reach down, trying to loosen her grip, but it’s hopeless.

Looking back into her eyes, it’s clear she’s gone. The lights are on, but she’s so terrified and traumatized, no one’s home.

She completely checked out earlier when the men grabbed us from the concrete cell they’ve been keeping us in to bring us here.

And, god help me, I don’t know if she’s ever coming back.

She’s been crying ever since we were first taken. Crying so much, at times it’s been annoying.

But this is different.

This is…

I don’t even know what this is.

We’ve only been separated once during this whole ordeal. Once, and she came back…

Broken.

Something must have happened to her when she was separated from Beth and me. Something so awful, she couldn’t bear to do it again.

Something so terrible, it took two men to carry her out this time, kicking and screaming.

I thought for sure they were going to kill her, just like they killed Lindsey when she put up a fight and resisted.

Until one of the men grabbed Amanda’s hand, pressed it against his groin, and whispered in her ear.

Then she went limp.

She’s been completely out of it since then, and I don’t know how to fix her.

The only thing I know with any certainty is that if we don’t do what these evil men say, they will kill us.

“What the fuck is going on here?” the armed man asks as he reaches Amanda and me.

His lip curls with disgust as his hard eyes roam down my body and lock on Amanda’s white-knuckled grip.

“I said backs against the wall, you stupid bitches! Not to grab each other’s asses!”

Still holding his rifle with both hands, he uses it to shove me backward, sending both Amanda and me into the wall.

My right shoulder bangs and scrapes against the rough brick as I stumble back, and Amanda’s fingers clench so hard her nails pierce my skin.

The pain barely registers though over my panic.

If she doesn’t let go, this could be the fucking end for the both of us.

Reaching down, I frantically try to pry her fingers off me again, but nothing I do seems to move her. Nothing until the armed man takes a step in her direction and reaches out like he’s going to grab her.

Throwing her hands up, Amanda quickly jumps away from me.

With tears streaming down her face, she begs, “No, no, no… please…”

Holding my breath, I watch the man with the rifle pause, and pray that he decides to move on and leave her alone now that we’re separated.

But God must be ignoring my prayers again.

A gleam of wicked realization fills the man’s eyes.

My heart sinks to my stomach as the man takes another step toward Amanda, his mouth curving with amusement.

Amanda tries to make herself as small as possible, nearly bending in half as she wraps her arms around herself.

For a split-second, I’m paralyzed as I relive the exact moment I watched another man lift a gun and kill my friend Lindsey before I had a chance to stop it.

Bethlehem

“I take it you called me here because everything went off as planned?” a smooth Russian voice drifts into the hallway outside my father’s office.

My father is so confident, so fucking brazen, he didn’t even bother to close the door. No, it sits wide open, allowing anyone and everyone walking by to overhear. He either has supreme faith in our household’s devotion and loyalty, or he’s grown stupider and stupider over the years.

I’m inclined to believe the latter.

“Yes. The target, Lucky Tails, is…” My father pauses. There’s a metallic clink followed by the unmistakable sound of a lighter being sparked. “No more.”

“Good… good.” The Russian chuckles and then the old, stiff leather of my father’s chair creaks. Someone inhales and exhales. “Any notable causalities?”

A wispy white cloud of smoke floats out of the room.

The lighter clinks shut and my father seems to hesitate before reluctantly admitting, “Only our inside contact.”

“I trust you’re taking care of that?”

Again, my father hesitates, and it gives me great joy to know it pains him to admit his failures.

“My men are on it. Her house is being dealt with as we speak.”

Her?

“Very good,” the Russian says, sounding pleased, and then there’s a long moment of silence.

I shift uncomfortably on my feet and glance down the hallway, my ears straining. If any of my father’s staff catches me eavesdropping on him, I’ll be beaten and locked inside my room for the next twenty years.

But I need to know why my father called me home from school. I need to know why he’s locked me up in this house. Why he won’t let me leave or contact anyone. Why all my IDs, credit cards, cash, computers, and phones have been confiscated…

And I have this awful, dreadful feeling that the answer is enjoying a cigar with him in that room.

“Alexei?” my father finally says, breaking the tense silence.

“Yes?” the Russian drawls out.

“I’ve fulfilled my side of the bargain…”

“You have,” Alexei answers simply, and it’s obvious even to me that he’s playing my father like a fiddle.

How my father retains his control over the Callahan family is a mystery even to me. I suppose most of it is due to a great deal of luck and opportunity. Most of the other Irish families in this part of the country have been wiped out by the Italians, causalities in a senseless turf war.

There simply aren’t enough powerful men left to overthrow him.

“I believe it’s time to take the next step and solidify our alliance.”

An alliance between the Irish and Russians… Just the thought makes me sick to my stomach.

What is this world coming to?

Hasn’t there been enough death? Enough bloodshed?

“Indeed,” Alexei says, sounding strangely pleased. “Is she here?”

She, as in me? Fuck. I’m currently the only ‘she’ in residence. My beloved mother passed away in a car bombing a year ago. My father blamed it on the Italians, but I know deep in my heart it was the Irish, this family, that killed her. The Italians may have set the bomb, but she would have never been in any danger if it wasn’t for this damn family.

“Yes. I called her home two weeks ago.”

Double fuck. I wish for once in my life that my gut was wrong. Why they need me to solidify their alliance though still doesn’t make any sense.

Unless… but no… that’s too old school and beyond archaic.

My father is a bastard of the highest degree, but I still refuse to believe he’d force me to marry a man I don’t want to marry. There’s still a touch of decency inside him. Still a touch of compassion for the only blood he has left…

“I trust she’s been prepared and knows what will be expected of her? I’d hate to have to break her in…”

Even as the blood drains from my face, I can picture my father’s face flushing bright red as he sputters with indignation. “My Meghan is a fine, upstanding young lass, and would make any man proud.”

God, what the fuck? Have I time-travelled back to the eighteenth century? This can’t be real.

Alexei chuckles as if he finds my father’s statement amusing, and then says, “You mean my Meghan.”

The way he says it, at first it comes off almost casual, but there’s a firmness there. Beneath the leftover amusement of his chuckle lurks something dangerous. Something that causes all the little hairs on my body to stand on end and my skin to prickle with apprehension.

To be married to that man… to be owned by him…

It’s simply unthinkable. I’m not a fucking object to be bargained off. I’m a person, goddammit.

Even my father is thrown off guard by Alexei’s declaration. “Y—yes,” he stammers and clears his throat. “Of course. Your Meghan.”

Someone inhales, then another cloud of smoke drifts into the hallway, giving this whole scene playing out in front of me a hazy, almost dream-like quality.
The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten.”

~ Cesare Pavese

Chapter One

Allie

Louisville, Kentucky

Heavy metal music blares from the next room, vibrating the walls. There’s a hint of smoke in the air, a mixture of cigarettes and marijuana, that bites at the back of the throat.

The lighting is dim, almost nonexistent, making the room I’m in seem dark and dingy, like the place hasn’t had a good cleaning in years.

Occasionally, voices raised in both joy and anger pierce through the pounding beat of the music. Tickling at the back of my senses.

But none of it matters.

Nothing matters except for the man holding me in his arms.

“Allie,” Coy growls into my mouth between thrusts of his tongue.

His taste… God, I can’t get enough of his taste. He tastes like bourbon, man, and something more. He tastes like something addictive… something I’ve been craving all my life.

He tastes like power, excitement, and danger all wrapped up in one.

Everything I’ve been warned away from.

Everything that could destroy me.

The perfect forbidden fruit.

Hand grabbing my face, firmly holding me in place, Coy kisses me deep. Kisses me like he’s trying to shove all his love down my throat.

I grab at his chest, fingers clutching the soft fabric of his black t-shirt, as he cuts off all my air.

My lungs begin to burn, aching for oxygen, and my head starts to feel light and woozy before he finally tears his mouth away.

Pressing his forehead against mine, he breathes out, his warm breath caressing my face, and says, “Fuck, I missed you.”

There’s true sincerity in his words, but a touch of anger, too.

Breathing heavily, his hard chest rises and falls against my clutching fingers.

Eyes closed, I take a moment to soak him in. Soak in the feeling of finally having him close, before I tell him, my throat almost aching with the words, “I missed you too.”

Coy’s breath hitches, his chest stilling for a heartbeat.

A warning my brain recognizes but doesn’t process until it’s too late.

With another growl rumbling in his chest, he picks me up, off my feet. The world spins as I’m swung through the air and then my back hits a wall.

Pushing his body into me, forcing my thighs to spread wide open for him, Coy’s mouth attacks my mouth again.

Unlike the first kiss, this kiss isn’t loving. No, it’s desperate and angry. Full of pent-up frustration.

I feel every single of one his emotions in the kiss. The way his tongue lashes at mine, I know he wants to punish me.

The way his teeth are there, just on the edge, ready to bite down, I know he wants me to feel his pain.

Pain because the one thing in the world he wants and needs is being kept away from him.

I know because it’s my pain, too.

“Seven days,” he says, his voice sharp with accusation as he breaks the kiss. His hand finds its way to the back of my head then his fingers lace through my hair and tug, forcing my neck to arch. “It’s been seven fucking days, Allie.”

Peering up, my eyes drink in his face. Even angry, he’s too fucking handsome. So handsome it makes my chest hurt.

“I’m sorry,” I exhale breathlessly, lungs working hard to catch up on air. “It’s not like I have a choice.”
Coming from powerful families, we thought we were untouchable.
We thought wrong. Our captors trapped us, violated us, and put us up for sale on the black market.
Johnathan was sent to buy me so his boss, Lucifer, could have leverage over my father.
Back home in Garden City, it’s in the eighties to nineties. Not fucking here, though. No, right fucking here it’s cold and fucking wintery.

Fuck this country and these cold-ass fucking snow flurries.

I don’t like seeing snow in September, it’s just not right. The sky doesn’t look like it’s going to ease the fuck up, so it’s probably only going to get worse.

That’s my fucking luck so far on this little job. I’ve been in Russia for almost three weeks now. Trailing a sack of shit from one city to the next, then chasing him from town to town.

Little fucker has a sixth sense when it comes to trouble. I’m fucking certain he doesn’t know I’m after him, but he hasn’t stayed in one place long enough for me to get to his ass.

He knows he fucked up in Garden City by trying to help Ivan, the man who tried to take Andrew’s daughter, Abigail, and hurt Lucifer’s daughter, Evelyn. It’s been a madhouse full of rage for those two over the past few months. It’s been kill this man, and find this guy, for just about any Russian our guys could get a lead on.

Then the little evil prick that he is, Simon, gets a lead on Yuri Popov.

Yuri Popov is a shitstain of a human being. Just like Ivan, he never got his hands dirty. He just pushed money into the hands of the people who would. He’s a bit nastier than Ivan was, though. Ivan got all his money from his ruthless determination and his wife’s deep pockets.

Yuri got it peddling child porn.

When he had enough money over in Russia, he bought his disgusting way to America. Leaving his business behind, he started running drugs and slaves out of small border crossing towns down in Texas. He still has operations down there too, but he had to hightail it out of America when he got word of Ivan getting toasted.

That’s when our shitboy, Yuri, decided to head back home to the motherland.

Not that they are especially happy to have a child pornographer back. Still, he has the money and connections to run and hide for a good long while… except Simon and Lucifer aren’t going to allow it.

Looking back up to the sky one last time, I growl at it. This fucking cold weather.

Standing on top of the building ledge in this shitty little town, I can’t fathom why every building looks so uniform and block style. It must be the former communist way of building things, I guess.

There’s a roof access hatch beside me, and with the one piece of luck I’ve had this whole shitty trip, I was able to jimmy it open.

Two-thirty in the morning should be a good time to sneak in, but for the last twenty minutes, I’ve been listening to a man and his woman screaming at each other drunkenly over some shit I can’t figure out.

They’ve got five more minutes before I go in regardless.

The small camera I have inside of Yuri’s father’s apartment shows he passed out on the couch about two hours ago. Shithead took some pills and drank some cheapass vodka. He should be sufficiently out of it while I break in.

Five minutes later, I’ve finally figured out the couple fighting below me are screaming something about him stealing her cigarettes and her fucking his brother.

I’m pretty sure the fight isn’t going to end any time soon.

The live feed from Yuri’s apartment shows him still passed out. Pulling the black ski mask over my face, I then snap and check once more that the leather gloves on my hands are tight.

It’s go time.

Moving to the roof access, I lift it up as silently as possible. The woman wailing like a banshee as she protests her innocence helps a lot with covering the sound.

Moving down the ladder quickly, I have two doors to choose from, left or right. I avoid the door where all the screaming is come from and kneel before Yuri’s door.

Pulling out a small set of picks, I quickly unlatch the first lock then move up to the second one.

It’s a deadbolt, but there are ways to bypass these fuckers.

I push the door open just barely to test if the chain has been set. Pulling a pair of bolt cutters form my backpack, I snip the chain during an extended wail from the lady across the hall.

Opening the door quickly, I enter the living room and shut the door as quickly and quietly as I can.

Looking left, I spot Yuri still passed out on the couch, his chest rising and falling steadily. I watch for a moment to make sure I haven’t disturbed him before I take quick, quiet steps back to his father’s bedroom.

The door is open, and splayed out on the bed is an elderly old man.
