When everything falls apart, the truth of who they are is revealed.

Poppy has fallen into stasis, her body broken and power spent, carried beyond the mortal realm. While she lies suspended in dreams, Casteel faces a world without her—raw, wrathful, and altered in ways he doesn’t yet understand.

Left to steady a kingdom trembling under the weight of loss, Kieran shoulders what he cannot say aloud, even as the fractures between gods, mortals, and fate widen around him.
In the days that follow, grief becomes a guide, loyalty a burden, and love the only thing holding the realms together.

These are the pieces that fill the silence. The moments of wrath, ruin, resolve, and the spark of what must come next.

A Crown of Ruin reveals the unseen moments of love, loss, and change that happened between The Primal of Blood and Bone and The Throne of Bone and Ash

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PENSDURTH

Poppy

I could feel myself slipping away as what little essence remaining in me thrummed wildly.

The burning agony clawing at the center of my chest had waned as my head lolled to the side and fell back into the empty space beneath me.

The mouth at my throat moved greedily, but I barely felt the fangs buried deep in my flesh. My vision faded again. My pulse skittered. A jolt of raw panic sent adrenaline coursing through me. The walls of the Great Hall of Seacliffe Manor returned. At first, everything blurred, swam, and shifted like a dream unraveling too fast, until a smear of bright crimson caught my gaze. I tracked it across the tiled floor to the blurry shape lying in a pool of red.

Blood.

Attes.

My heart stuttered weakly. He hadn’t moved since Kolis had hit him with eather.

Thoughts sluggish, I stared at Attes. Hadn’t I felt something seconds ago? A presence? And hadn’t I seen something…? My gaze shifted to the center of the Great Hall, where wisps of Primal mist swirled around a tall form—

There was a quick flash of light, and then the mist and the form within it were gone.

I wasn’t even sure what I had seen.

Kolis shuddered against me, and I slowly realized he no longer felt so cold. His body was warming. It was my essence, the essence of life, doing that—while I was growing colder and colder.

I was really dying.

No.

No.

I wouldn’t die. Not like this. I had to fight. I should be fighting, and I needed to be better at it, because once Kolis was done with me, he would go for him, and I couldn’t allow that. Because he was…

My first.

My friend. Lover. Betrayer.

My husband. King. Heartmate.

Casteel Da’Neer was my everything.

And I would not allow anything to happen to him.

Pushing past the pain and numbness that threatened to take hold, I focused on what essence I could still feel inside me until it was a hum in my blood and a buzz in my skin. The eather joined the panic and desperation drowning me, and I let it. I let it pour into every vein, every cell, until I could lift my hand and place it against Kolis’s chest. Until I tasted death. And like before, it was coated in sugar. Shadows filled the corners of my vision.

Kolis jerked his head back, and the pain of his fangs tearing through the flesh of my throat joined the panic and desperation. His crimson-streaked eyes met mine.

I smiled.

His brows pulled together as he tilted his head.

Then, I did the unthinkable.

I snapped my head forward, sinking my fangs into his neck. My aim was a little off as I tore through a tendon before hitting his vein. Blood flowed into my mouth and coursed down my throat, turning my stomach. I didn’t let myself think about his taste—the flavor behind the iron-rich blood. I drank fast, drawing hard on the ruined vein.

I can handle this.

I can handle this.

Either shock or pain—probably the former—held him immobile. He didn’t shake me off as I latched onto him, swallowing and swallowing as fast as I could because I knew the surprise wouldn’t last long.

And I was right.

He gripped the back of my head, and for a moment, held on. I didn’t let myself think about that either, or why. I kept drinking, feeling the coldness retreating first from my fingers and then my legs.

Kolis snarled, jerking my head back. “You bit me,” he sputtered, his eyes wide. “You actually bit me.”

The essence thrummed more intensely as he continued to bend my neck back. The hand I had on his shoulder started to vibrate as my veins turned icy.

“I can’t believe you did that.”

I laughed, and the sound was full of shadows and ruin as the essence of death flowed from my palm and slammed into Kolis.

There was a flicker of surprise in his face, and then he flew backward, the veins in his chest and shoulders lit up with eather as he smashed into a pillar. The stone cracked and gave way, both he and the column collapsing into the shadows of the alcove.

I didn’t give myself time to celebrate. Kolis wouldn’t stay down for long, and what I had gained by feeding on him had been spent by using the eather. I had seconds, if that.

I rolled over and dragged myself to my knees. I needed a weapon. Something. Anything. My gaze swung around the space and landed on Attes and the blade still strapped to his chest.

Pushing to my feet, I forced one foot in front of the other as I swiped my hand over my mouth as if to wipe away the sweet taste of his blood. It wasn’t bad, but having the taste of Kolis’s blood in my mouth made me want to vomit as I stumbled across the chamber, each breath coming in short, shallow pants. Dropping to Attes’s side, I reached for the hilt of the dagger and then stopped, my hand hovering just above the gaping wound in his chest. Good gods, I could see the floor beneath the mess of muscle and bone. Eather warmed my palms. The urge to heal him hit hard. My fingers tingled with the need as my eyes darted to his too-pale face and the stark, jagged scar slicing through his brow and the bridge of his nose.
In the shadows and flames, Primals will fall…

And from the blood and ash, new gods will rise.

What was dreamt.

Poppy was never meant to awaken, and the consequences are devastating and far-reaching, stirring ancient powers from their slumber and transforming Casteel and Kieran in ways even the Fates couldn’t have foreseen. But what that means is the least of their concerns. For now.

What was foreseen.

The Blood Crown has fallen, but what has risen is a far greater danger than they’ve ever faced. From flesh and fire, the Great Conspirator has returned to the mortal realm, and he wants only one thing. They must stop the true Primal of Death before he regains his strength, and it won’t be easy. Even weakened, his influence is undeniable. His power, unthinkable.

Has come to be.

While the future of the realms rests upon them, they won’t stand alone. The gods have awakened—each harboring their own blood-soaked secrets. But they must navigate an unbalanced realm, where every choice—past and present—has the potential to not only undo everything they’ve fought for but also destroy the very bonds that have Joined them together.

For the Harbinger and the Bringer of Death and Destruction has risen

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

THE PRIMAL

I floated through the nothingness, surrounded by darkness.

I had a distinct feeling I’d heard voices. His voice. Talking to me. Telling me stories. Pleading with me as a glimmer of light appeared in the dark. But then, the pain came. I remembered that. Intense, searing pain accompanied by suffocating dread that snuffed out the light.

I…

I did something to stop it.

But I couldn’t recall what the voices told me, what had caused the pain, or what I’d done.

Now, I drifted.

Wherever I was, there was no sensation of pleasure or pain. No feelings of fear or excitement, hate or love. It was as if I had been emptied of all emotion and purpose. Whatever my identity had once been, it no longer held any significance.

I was a part of the nothingness that surrounded me, and stayed like that until a light flashed, sending out streaks of silver that pierced the darkness. A pinprick of sapphire-blue appeared as the light faded, growing brighter. Bolts of stunning emerald spun from its center and twisted around the blue. Warm, rich brown followed, curling itself around the blue and green. And in the center of it all was the beginning of everything.

It started with an explosion that left behind small, pulsing lights of raw energy—pure essence.

That energy rippled outward, molding barren lands and mountains where nothing had existed before, and all those small, pulsing lights twinkling in the skies above were stars. Bright, brilliant stars that began to fall, descending upon lands no longer barren. They crashed into the earth where great winged creatures ruled, and in other lands separated by vast bodies of water to the west and east. Those stars embedded themselves deep within the ground, where trees sprouted from the land above them, nourished and grown by the star’s essence below. As the trees grew strong, so did the stars hidden beneath, each nurturing each other until they rose from the earth.

As I saw them with eyes that mirrored their beginnings and features and skins that seemed to change on a whim, I heard their names whispered through all the realms, through all time. Gods. Benevolent guardians. Wrathful prosecutors. The watchers of man. Elementals. The Fair Folk. Fates. The first gods. The Great Creators.

The Ancient Ones.

And I saw their wars, first with the great winged beasts that ruled the lands, and then with their creations.

Because they had begun to dream of what was to come.

Ten of the Ancients.

The dreamers.

The protectors.

I saw their flesh turn to fire as they burned off their essence to create the first Primals and understood why. They were desperate to ensure the balance of power remained untainted because their dreams had warned them of what would happen if it didn’t. A faint warmth sparked inside me and spread as creation changed. Gods were birthed from Primal unions—gods that would one day Ascend to Primalhood.

And those ten Ancients dreamed. They saw what was coming.

The beginning of the end.

And I saw that the end started with its very own beginning. The birth of a young god, born of two Primals and Ascended into Primalhood.

The true Primal of Life.

His insatiable thirst for life and curiosity led to the first being of duality, strengthening the truce between those who walked the land, and the winged beasts who owned the sky.

But I saw what the Primal could not. He hadn’t created them in the ways of the Ancients. He’d given the beasts a choice. And from that singular act, something unexpected happened. For the fierce beasts felt beyond the physical, and that quality was passed on to the first being of duality.

Free will.

And free will led to choice. And from choice, emotion was born.

Pilar

“Your father is dying.”

My older brothers and I exchanged a grave look at those words. It wasn’t a surprise or a shock. His health had been declining for years, and it was only a matter of time before it happened. None of that made it any easier to prepare for. My mother was stoic even as she laid the news out for us. She once said she’d learned the trait from watching my father. In the silence of his chambers, I tried to form a chant inside my head. “Long live the king!”

It was something people said in pubs while drinking, outside of the palace walls during ceremonies, and in the form of a salute when they met my father. My father. The King of France. The one who was slowly deteriorating in the room next door like many kings before him.

We were well-taught and knew the history of our sovereigns, as well as the ones in my mother’s homeland of Spain. The one constant in all of those stories was death. Death by plague, death by combat, death by cancer, but always death. However timely or untimely it may seem. Yet when faced with it, we weren’t sure what to do. When confronted by it, we all felt the same thing those outside these walls felt. Even if we didn’t show it on our faces like my mother. On the inside, we wept and trembled. We were scared. We felt hollow.

My eldest brother, Elias, took my right hand. My other brother, Aramis, took my left. We squeezed, the three of us knowing that this would change the course of our lives forever. We were the only ones who could possibly understand what the other was feeling, allowed ourselves to wallow as our mother stood with her back to us, her head held high as she looked out the window.

“He wants to crown Elias before he goes,” Mother said, her voice shaking. “He wants to be here for that, at least.”

Elias’s hand tightened on mine. He hung his head as if her words had delivered a blow. I knew they had. One thing Aramis and I did not envy was that Elias was next in line. The idea of being king may seem exciting to some, but we knew the reality of it. The proof was dying in the next room.

“The doctor is giving him six months,” Mother continued. “You will all be on your best behavior in the coming weeks. Your father does not want anyone to know about this yet. Not until everything is ready for the coronation. That means you may take your short holiday as you normally do, but no scandals this time. We do not have room for missteps. Elias, you’d do well to use this time to reflect. It may be the last time you’re able to do that. Aramis, I beg you to be discreet. Please, no tabloids. Pilar, you’ve never given us any grief. Please keep it that way.”

She turned and faced us. It was then that we saw her grief-stricken expression and bloodshot eyes. The three of us moved closer to each other, huddling in as if to prevent anything from coming between us.

“This is what we’ve tried to prepare you for your entire lives. Don’t let us down.”

CHAPTER 1

Pilar

“How hungover are you?” my best friend and personal secretary, Joslyn, asked as she opened all of the blinds.

“Very,” I croaked, throwing an arm over my face to shield myself from the sun. “Don’t worry, no scandals on my end.”

“You sure about that? The chef spotted Benjamin Drake leaving your villa just before five o’clock in the morning.”

“What?” I sat up quickly with a gasp. “No.”

“Yes.” She raised an eyebrow. “I take one night off, and you go out partying without me?”

“I…” I shook my head. “I went to a Hookah bar and then to the club beside it…” I tried to recall memories from last night. “I…yeah, I definitely spoke to Ben. I think we may have danced.” I shut my eyes momentarily. “I was extremely drunk.”

“And you’re on medicine.” Joss shot me a heavy stare. “You know better than to mix things like that with alcohol.”

“Fuck.” I brought my hands to my face and wiped at my eyes. I’d completely forgotten that I’d taken the medicine the doctor had given me for the sinus infection I no longer had. It had been my last day of taking it. “How could I not remember spending the night with Benjamin-bloody-Drake?”

“How indeed?” Joss sighed as she sat on the edge of my bed. “You must have made a good impression though.”

“Why do you say that?”

“His people called me an hour ago. He wants you to accompany him to a gala next week.”

“Me?”

“Yep.”

“Why me? I don’t even like public appearances.”
From #1 bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes the thrilling conclusion to her beloved Flesh and Fire series…

The line between love and obsession has never been wider.
While Sera is finally free of Kolis and back with those she loves, not everything is calm. Memories of all she’s endured still haunt her, but Sera finally has hope for a future with the other half of her heart and soul. Nyktos desires, loves, and accepts every part of her—even the monstrous bits she still battles.
More than ever, Sera and Ash have everything under the realms to fight for, and Nyktos has no doubt Sera is fit to be the Queen of the Gods. But she must find that faith within herself if they hope to convince the other Courts to support them against Kolis and make Iliseeum and the mortal realm better, safer places for all.
But as Sera begins to piece together the importance of her bloodline and the true meaning behind the foreboding prophecy, it becomes clear that everything that has happened and is yet to come is much bigger than Kolis and his dark obsessions.
They cannot help but wonder exactly how much influence the Fates have had and what their ultimate goal is. What Sera does know for sure is that they can trust very few—including her.
A battle between the gods is brewing, and heartbreaking losses are imminent with the true Primal of Death strengthening. With a family of the heart willing to battle by their side, can Sera and Nyktos stop Kolis before he destroys the realms, or will it all disappear in a fiery inferno of blood and ash?
And the line between justice and vengeance has never been so thin.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Pronunciation Guide

Characters

It was the last place Ash wanted to be when all he could think about was that his Queen—his mate of the heart, his wife, his entire world—was in their bed, waiting for him.

He’d only left her side a handful of minutes ago, but his flesh practically vibrated with the need to return to her. To look upon her. Touch her. Remind himself that she was safe, healthy, and alive. That her Ascension and the hours that’d followed hadn’t been just a wonderful sort of dream.

Ash was desperate to remind himself that, despite everything he’d done to keep himself closed off from others, even going so far as to have his kardia removed, they’d still fallen together, cracking the thick shields they held close to their chests and shattering the barriers they’d erected to keep each other out. The sheer strength of Ash’s will had defied fate. They had defied fate.

All because of what was most unpredictable.

The unknown and unwritten.

The only thing more powerful than the Fates…

True love of the heart and soul—mates of the heart.

But this conversation with Nektas was important. It needed to happen.

So, he would be patient.

Or, at the very least, tolerant of the interruption.

“The realm is quiet,” Nektas shared, his voice low.

“For now.”

“For now,” the draken agreed, crimson-streaked black hair sliding over a shoulder. “The borders between the Shadowlands and Vathi are quiet. As well as the skies. There hasn’t been any movement by Attes or Kyn, either.”

Ash wasn’t concerned about Attes—not that he didn’t want to flay the skin from the bastard’s bones. His hand fisted at his side. No. It was the Primal of Accord and War’s brother that he planned to slowly, painfully eviscerate, starting by taking a strip of his flesh for every word he’d spoken to Ash while he’d been imprisoned—whether true or not.

“His Majesty was gracious enough to offer her to me once he tires of her.” Kyn’s eyes gleamed with a particular brand of sadistic joy as he got right up in Ash’s face, thinking he was completely subdued. “Don’t think she liked hearing that.” He laughed. “Doubt she’ll like feeling my cock in her ass either, but she’ll come to enjoy it. Even beg for—” His words ended in a gurgle of blood and curses.

Ash had stretched the bone chains just enough to lift his arm and dig his fingers into the fucker’s throat. Lost half the skin and a chunk of bone in the process, but he hadn’t cared. He’d gladly do it again and again. That was how strong his fury was.
They won’t die without it, but they become something that is not quite alive. Full-blooded Atlantians are essentially immortal.
The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates.

After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.

Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though – not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis’s erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could’ve prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.

But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He’ll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that’s exactly what will happen if he doesn’t Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands.

But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten. The only thing more powerful than the Fates…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Map

To see a full-size version of the map, visit

Despite the warmth and humidity of Dalos, the City of the Gods, I was now cold—colder than I’d ever been. I thought maybe I was fading because my vision was flickering in and out. I tried to focus on the open doors of the circular chamber I’d awakened in after the Shadowlands siege—in a cage and chained.

I had thought I’d seen a large wolf standing there. A wolf more silver than white.

A wolf I’d known in my heart and soul was him: the Asher, the One who is Blessed, the Guardian of Souls, and the Primal God of Common Men and Endings. The ruler of the Shadowlands.

My husband.

Nyktos.

Ash.

He’d never confirmed that he could shift forms, but I knew it was my Primal of Death. And when I saw the wolf, I’d thought he’d come for me. That I would see him, touch him one last time, have the chance to tell him once more that I loved him. That I’d get to say goodbye on my terms.

But I didn’t see him in the doorway now.

He wasn’t there.

What if he’d never been there?

The arms around me tightened, making my sluggish heart race. Kolis, the false King of Gods, still held me, likely reeling from the realization of who was in his embrace—who he’d fed on.

“Is it truly you?” Kolis’s voice was no louder than a sigh. Tears dampened my cheeks. Were they mine? His? “My love?”

I shuddered. Gods, Ash had been wrong when he said I may feel fear but am never afraid. Because the sound of Kolis simply speaking brought an avalanche of terror. It didn’t matter that it was only Sotoria’s soul inside me. That I wasn’t her, and she wasn’t me. He terrified both of us.

Two leather-clad legs suddenly appeared in my line of vision. My gaze lifted, moving over the shadowstone daggers strapped to his hips. Light brownish-blond hair brushed the collar of a black tunic. The Primal of War and Accord had been facing the doors. The traitorous bastard who’d brought me to Kolis must have seen Ash if he’d been there. Right? In his wolf form, he was massive—larger than any wolf I’d ever seen.

Unless he’d never been there in the first place, and I’d hallucinated him.

My chest hollowed, and…oh, gods, the swell of sorrow was an unbearable pressure, threatening to crush me.

“Your Majesty.” Attes twisted sharply toward us. “She’s not well,” he said. “She’s close to death. You have to be able to feel that.”

“You need to take those embers before she passes,” another voice urged, one that carried a soft lilt. The Revenant, Callum. One of Kolis’s works in progress. “Take them—”

“The embers are the least of your concerns,” Attes interrupted, speaking directly to Kolis. “She is about to die.”

There was no response from the false King. He just…gods, he just held me, his large body trembling. Was he in shock? If so, that made me want to laugh. Which meant I, too, was likely in shock.

“If she dies with the embers, they die, too—along with everything you’ve been working toward,” Callum insisted, drawing my attention to him. He was blurry at first but then came into focus. The Revenant was golden all over: his hair, his skin, and the elaborately painted mask shaped like wings that swept down from his forehead to his jaw on either side. “Take them, my King. Take them and Ascend as the Primal of Life and—”
SHE LIVES BY HER INTUITION. HE FEEDS ON HER PLEASURE.

Long ago, the world was destroyed by gods. Only nine cities were spared. Separated by vast wilderness teeming with monsters and unimaginable dangers, each city is now ruled by a guardian―royalty who feed on mortal pleasure.

Born with an intuition that never fails, Calista knows her talents are of great value to the power-hungry of the world, so she lives hidden as a courtesan of the Baron of Archwood. In exchange for his protection, she grants him information.

When her intuition leads her to save a traveling prince in dire trouble, the voice inside her blazes with warning―and promise. Today he’ll bring her joy. One day he'll be her doom.

When the Baron takes an interest in the traveling prince and the prince takes an interest in Calista, she becomes the prince’s temporary companion. But the city simmers with rebellion, and with knights and monsters at her city gates and a hungry prince in her bed, intuition may not be enough to keep her safe.

Calista must follow her intuition to safety or follow her heart to her downfall.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Divinus: Di-vie-nus
Missing the warm beds found at the Priory of Mercy, I tightened my aching fingers around the scratchy, worn blanket. I never slept well on the floor, where the mice and rats usually scurried all night.

But tonight, there were no glimpses of their thin, slick tails, nor did I hear the rap of their claws upon the stone. That should be a welcome discovery, but something didn’t feel right. Not about the floor beneath me or the air I breathed.

I’d woken with tiny goose bumps all over my skin and a bad feeling in the pit of my belly. The Prioress had taught me to always trust my second sight, the pull of my intuition, and the urge of my instinct. They were gifts, she’d told me over and over, given by the gods because I was born from the stars.

I didn’t understand what she’d meant by the whole star part, but right now, my intuition was telling me something was very wrong.

I eyed the damp stone walls lit by the gas lanterns, searching for a sign of what made my belly feel like I’d eaten spoiled meat. By the door, a light flickered and went out. The lantern by the window sputtered, then ceased as another did the same. Across the chamber, the last lamp went dead.

No fingers had cut off the light. I would’ve seen anyone who dared risk inciting the Mister’s ire by messing with the lanterns.

My gaze darted back to the fireplace. The flames from the coals still burned, doing a poor job of heating the chamber, but that wasn’t what caught my attention. The fire . . . it made no sound. Not a crackle or a hiss.

A shiver of dread stirred the tiny hairs along the nape of my neck and spider-walked its way down my spine.

Beside me, a lump shifted beneath the blanket and rolled. Tufts of curly, messy brown hair appeared as Grady peered over the edge of the blanket. He blinked sleep-heavy eyes. “Whatcha doing, Lis?” he murmured, his voice cracking halfway through. It had been doing that more and more of late, starting around the same time he’d begun to grow like the weeds in the yard behind the home.

“Lis?” Grady rose slightly, holding the blanket to his chin as the flames in the fireplace began to weaken. “Was the Mister bothering you again?”

I gave a quick shake of my head, having not seen the Mister even though my arms were lined with evidence of other nights and his mean, pinching fingers.

Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he frowned. “Did you have a bad dream or something?”

“No,” I whispered. “The air doesn’t feel right.”

“The air . . . ?”

“Is it ghosts?” I croaked.

He snorted. “Ghosts aren’t real.”

I squinted. “How do you know?”

“Because I . . .” Grady trailed off, looking over his shoulder as the flames of the fireplace collapsed, leaving the room lit by slivers of moonlight. His head turned slowly as he scanned the chamber, noticing the dead lanterns then. His wide gaze shot to mine. “They’re here.”

My entire body jerked as an icy wave of terror swept over me. They’re here could mean only one thing.

The Hyhborn.

The scions of the gods looked like us— well, most of them did, but those who ruled the Kingdom of Caelum weren’t like us low-born. They weren’t mortal at all.

And they had no reason to be here.

It wasn’t the Feasts, when the Hyhborn interacted more openly with us lowborn, and this was the Rook. We weren’t in the pretty places with things and people of value. There was no pleasure in anything to be found here for them to feed upon.
Only his memories can save her…

A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Iliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come.

But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cas faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cas is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her.

And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout revisits Poppy and Casteel’s epic love story in the next installment of the Blood and Ash series. But this time, Hawke gets to tell the tale.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Characters

A vampry darted between the sandstone pillars, rushing into the lamplit hall of the seemingly unending vault beneath Wayfair Castle, nothing more than a flash of streaming dark hair, alabaster skin, and crimson silk.

There was no hesitation. Neither Kieran nor I had given any of them leeway since entering the underground.

I released the dagger, sending it flying across the hall. The bloodstone blade struck true, embedding deeply in the vampry’s chest, cutting off the annoying, godsawful shriek as it knocked the Ascended back. A web of fissures rapidly appeared in the Ascended’s flesh, spreading across its cheeks and down its throat. Skin cracked and then peeled back, lifting from bone and turning to dust. Within a heartbeat, my dagger clanged off the stone floor beside nothing more than a pile of silk.

“Cas.” It came out as a sigh, and my lips curved into a smile despite the frustration filling the breathy word.
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book two in her Flesh and Fire series…

The only one who can save Sera now is the one she spent her life planning to kill.

The truth about Sera’s plan is out, shattering the fragile trust forged between her and Nyktos. Surrounded by those distrustful of her, all Sera has is her duty. She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm.

Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them. Sera cannot afford to fall for the tortured Primal, not when a life no longer bound to a destiny she never wanted is more attainable than ever. But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

“You are the heir to the lands and seas, skies and realms. A Queen instead of a King. You are the Primal of Life,” Nyktos—the Asher, the One who is Blessed, the Guardian of Souls and the Primal God of Common Men and Endings—rasped. Those lips of his that had whispered heated words against my skin and had also spoken cold, brutal truths were now parted. Wide, silver eyes churning with streams of luminous eather—the essence of the gods—fixed on mine. A sort of awe and wonder softened the cold lines of his high, broad cheekbones, his blade-straight nose, and cut jaw.

Wavy, reddish-brown hair fell against golden-bronze cheeks as he lowered himself to one knee, placing his left hand flat on the throne room floor and his right palm over his chest.

Nyktos was bowing to me.

I recoiled from him. “What are you doing?”

“The Primal of Life is the most powerful being in all the realms, usurping all other Primals and gods,” Sir Holland said. Except he was no longer the man I once knew as a knight of the Royal Guard of Lasania, or a mere mortal. He was one of the Arae—an actual, godsforsaken Fate, neither god nor mortal. Able to see the past, present, and future of all, the Arae weren’t beholden to any Primal Court.

Fates were as terrifying as any Primal, and I couldn’t even begin to count how many times I’d kicked him.

“He is showing you the respect you are owed, Sera,” Holland added as I continued staring at Nyktos.

“But I’m not the Primal of Life.” I stated the obvious.

“You carry the only true embers of life inside you,” Nyktos said, and that deep, softly spoken voice sent a myriad of shivers over my skin. “For all intents and purposes, you are the Primal of Life.”

“He speaks the truth.” The goddess Penellaphe drew closer, coming to stand beneath the open ceiling. The star-strewn sky cast a soft glow over her warm, light brown skin. “Denying it isn’t a luxury which can be afforded.”

“But I’m just a mortal—” My lungs felt as if they’d been filled with tiny holes, and Nyktos was still bowing to me. “Can you please stand or sit? Anything other than kneel? It’s really weirding me out.”

Nyktos’s head tilted, sending several strands of hair against his cheek. “You are the true Primal of Life, just as my father was. As Holland said, it’s a show of respect.”

“But I don’t des—” I cut myself off, my heart thumping and chest squeezing. The eather in his eyes stilled. “Can you just not do that? Please.”

The Primal rose quickly, the wisps of essence in his eyes brightening so vividly they were almost painful to look upon. He towered over me, his stare seeming to peel away the layers of my very being, seeing…sensing what I felt.

I stiffened, my skin becoming hot and prickly. “You’d better not be reading my emotions.”

Nyktos arched a dark brow. “Your accusatory tone is unnecessary.”

“And your response wasn’t a declaration of innocence,” I retorted. Penellaphe’s eyes flared wide.

“No.” His voice had dropped, but it still somehow thundered through me. “It was not.”

“Then don’t do it,” I snapped. “It’s rude.”

Nyktos’s mouth opened, likely to point out that I was the last person who should speak on rude behavior.

“You have never been just a mortal, Seraphena.” Holland stepped in smoothly, just as he’d done dozens of times in the past whenever I’d descended into a rant spiral. “You are the possibility of a future for all.”

He’d said a version of that before during training, but it took on a whole different meaning now. “But I haven’t completed any Culling, and you just said that I would…” Closing my eyes, I didn’t finish the sentence.

Everyone here knew what had been said.

Breathe in. My mortal body and mind wouldn’t be able to handle the power of the embers once I began the Ascension. The only chance I had of surviving wasn’t even a hope. Hold. Because it required the blood of the Primal that one of the embers of life belonged to—that and sheer will powered by love.

The love of the Primal I’d spent the entirety of my life planning to kill. It didn’t matter that I’d believed it was the only way to save my kingdom.

The irony of it all made me want to laugh, except I was going to die. Likely in less than five months and before I turned twenty-one, taking the last true embers of life with me. The mortal realm would be hit first and the hardest. Eventually, the Rot would spread beyond the Shadowlands to all of Iliseeum.

I exhaled long and slow, just like Holland had taught me many years ago, when everything became too heavy, too much, and the weight of it all choked the air from me. My impending death wasn’t something new. I’d always known. Whether I failed or succeeded when it came to fulfilling my destiny, I knew I would die in the process.
From the desperation of golden crowns…
Casteel Da’Neer knows all too well that very few are as cunning or vicious as the Blood Queen, but no one, not even him, could’ve prepared for the staggering revelations. The magnitude of what the Blood Queen has done is almost unthinkable.
And born of mortal flesh… Nothing will stop Poppy from freeing her King and destroying everything the Blood Crown stands for. With the strength of the Primal of Life’s guards behind her, and the support of the wolven, Poppy must convince the Atlantian generals to make war her way—because there can be no retreat this time. Not if she has any hope of building a future where both kingdoms can reside in peace.
A great primal power rises…
Together, Poppy and Casteel must embrace traditions old and new to safeguard those they hold dear—to protect those who cannot defend themselves. But war is only the beginning. Ancient primal powers have already stirred, revealing the horror of what began eons ago. To end what the Blood Queen has begun, Poppy might have to become what she has been prophesied to be—what she fears the most.
As the Harbinger of Death and Destruction.
meeyah Liessa – (mee-yah lee-sa)

Chapter 1

Casteel

The click and drag of claws drew closer as the weak flame above the lone candle sputtered and then went out, pitching the cell into darkness.

A thicker mass of shadows appeared in the open archway—a misshapen form on its hands and knees. It halted, sniffing as loudly as a godsdamn barrat, scenting blood.

My blood.

The smooth bands of shadowstone tightened around my throat and ankles as I shifted, bracing myself. The damn stone was unbreakable, but it did come in handy.

A low-pitched wail came from the creature.

“Mother—” The thing exploded out of the archway, scurrying forward, its keening moan becoming an ear-piercing screech. “—fucker.”

I waited until its stench of decay reached me and then pressed my back against the wall, lifting my legs. The length of the chain between my ankles was only about half a foot, and the shackles wouldn’t give an inch, but it was enough. Planting my bare feet into the creature’s shoulders, I got a good, most unfortunate look at the thing as its foul breath blasted me in the face.

Man, the Craven was not a fresh one.

Patches of gray flesh clung to its hairless skull, and half of its nose was gone. One entire cheekbone was exposed, eyes burning like hot coals. Lips torn and mangled—

The Craven twisted its head down, sinking its fangs into my calf. Its teeth tore through the breeches and into flesh and muscle. Air hissed between my gritted teeth as fiery pain burned its way up my leg.

Worth it.

The pain was more than worth it.

I would spend an eternity taking these bites if that meant she was safe. That it wasn’t her in this cell. That she wasn’t the one in pain.

Shaking the Craven free, I dragged the short chain over the thing’s neck as I crossed my feet. I twisted at the waist, pulling the dull bone chain tight across its throat, ending the Craven’s screams. The shackle clamped down on my throat as I kept turning, cutting off my air as the chain dug into the Craven’s neck. Its arms flailed on the floor as I jerked my legs in the opposite direction, snapping the creature’s spine. The spasming became more of a twitching as I hauled it within reach of my bound hands. The chain between my wrists, connected to the shackle at my throat, was much shorter—but long enough.

I grasped the Craven’s cold, clammy jowls and brought its head down hard, slamming it against the stone floor by my knees. Flesh gave way, spraying rotting blood over my stomach and chest. Bone split open with a wet-sounding crack. The Craven went limp. I knew it wouldn’t stay down, but it bought me some time.

Lungs burning, I unwound the chain and kicked the creature away from me. It landed by the archway in a tangled mess of limbs as I relaxed my muscles. The band around my neck was slow to loosen, eventually allowing air into my burning lungs.

I stared at the Craven’s body. At any other time, I would’ve kicked the bastard into the hall like usual, but I was weakening.

I was losing too much blood.

Already.

Not a good sign.

Breathing heavily, I looked down. Just below the shadowstone bands, shallow slices ran up the insides of my arms, past both elbows and over the veins. I counted them. Again. Just to be sure.

Thirteen.

Thirteen days had passed since the first time the Handmaidens swarmed this cell, dressed in black and as quiet as a tomb. They came once a day to cut into my flesh, siphoning my blood as if I were a damn barrel of fine wine.

A tight, savage smile twisted my mouth. I’d managed to take out three of them in the beginning. Ripped their throats out when they got too close, which was why they’d shortened the chain between my wrists. Only one of them actually stayed dead, though. The damn throats of the other two had stitched themselves closed within minutes—impressive and also infuriating to witness.

Learned something valuable, though.

Not all of the Blood Queen’s Handmaidens were Revenants.

I wasn’t sure how I could use that information yet, but I guessed they were using my blood to make brand-spanking-new Revs. Or using it as a dessert for the lucky.
