From USA Today bestselling author JD Hollyfield comes a sizzling, rule-breaking romance that will leave you breathless.

When Georgia receives the opportunity of a lifetime—an internship alongside her boyfriend for the summer—she never expects to be swept into an illicit affair with the one person she should avoid: his father.

In a whirlwind of family secrets, undeniable chemistry, and steamy passion, Georgia finds herself caught between a love that defies logic and the dangerous consequences of betrayal in this age-gap, forbidden romance that pushes every boundary.

Is their connection enough to withstand the explosion when the truth comes out, or will they burn in the embers?

This novel may contain triggers. Don’t say you weren’t warned…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter one

Georgia

Isit across the kitchen island from Noah in his father’s luxurious home, watching him throw back a beer.

“Are we going to talk about this?”

He opens another bottle before answering me. “What do you want to talk about? You said you don’t want to be with me.”

“I said I think we need a break.”

“Same fucking thing.” He slams the beer down on the granite counter, the sharp sound echoing through the room. Shoving back, the legs of the barstool screech against the marble floor. He stands, gripping the back of his neck. I knew this would be a mistake. I shouldn’t have come home with him.

When Noah’s father offered him a paid internship at his company, extending the same offer to me, it seemed like a no-brainer. I was free for the summer and in need of extra cash. I thought maybe we could work things out, convinced myself it could be worth it…

I should have known better.

There is no fixing us.

Noah and I met during our first year of college. Athletic, intelligent, funny, too-hot-for-his-own-good, we hit it off right away—a.k.a. slept together within five hours. Classic college move, right? I can’t say it was the most spontaneous thing I’d ever done, but with enough booze, well… shit happens. Thankfully, what could have turned into a regrettable walk of shame ultimately led to a full-fledged relationship.

Our entire first year together, we couldn’t keep our hands off each other. It was hot. Crazy. Nothing I’d ever experienced.

But outside of sex, Noah and I couldn’t have been more different. Our similarities, rooted in damaged family lives, shared secrets, and a void we desperately tried to fill, should’ve connected us. Instead, they became the things that drove us apart.

Now, I’m stuck in an unfamiliar town, about to start a job for a man I don’t know, with someone I’ve just broken up with.

Great.

Good work, Georgia.

I meant every word when I said we needed time apart. Sex was never going to fix what’s broken between us. He’s controlling, manipulative, and when things don’t go his way, he turns ugly. We fought the entire drive from Iowa back to Chicago, his words harsh and cruel, each insult landing harder than any physical blow. By the time we made it home, I knew I’d finally reached my breaking point.

Noah hadn’t always been like this. In the beginning, he was attentive, funny, sweet, incredible in bed, easy to love. But as time passed and he grew more comfortable, his mask began to slip, revealing a man with more demons than I could handle, fueled by a pain he stubbornly refused to acknowledge. Perhaps it was the burden of abandonment and longing to be loved the way he needed to be. We shared a similar ache, both having lost a parent at a young age. Maybe that’s why we clung to each other so fiercely—two broken souls desperately trying to fill an empty void.

“Fuck this. I’m going to bed. You can come with me or sleep wherever you want. There’re a million rooms in the house.”

“Noah, are you serious?” I ask in disbelief. Instead of replying, he grabs another beer from the fridge and leaves me alone at the kitchen island. Part of me feels like I should follow him, but there’s nothing left to say, and finding a spare room to be alone with my thoughts is easier. I watch his back as he vanishes down the hallway and up the stairs. I’m not ready to lie next to him and allow him to convince me I’m wrong. I know this is the right decision. I love him, but I’m not the one who can fix him.

I grab a bottle of water from the fridge and roll it over my forehead, allowing the coolness to ground me for a moment. Perhaps it’s not too late to return to school, find a roommate, and secure a summer job. My sister would love it if I came home, and I should. She needs me. The weight that I carry, worrying about her alone in the house with him.

But going home is not an option. I’m not on speaking terms with my mother, let alone the reason I left in the first place. My stepfather is a real winner. A heartless asshole who thinks hitting a woman is okay. Shaking it off, accepting the predicament I’ve put myself in, I grab my bag and head upstairs to find a spare room. The house is massive—far too big for one person.

I make my way down a long hallway, the bass thumping through a closed door that I assume leads to Noah’s room. I continue on, pausing at the last door on the right. When I push it open, the bold scent of cologne teases my senses. A king-size bed takes up the center of the room, silver sheets shimmering under the light, tempting me to feel how luxurious and soft they are. I take in the tall dresser and a lounge chair tucked neatly in the corner, then my eyes drift to the en suite. The door is slightly ajar, offering a glimpse of a spacious shower enclosed in pristine glass.
From the USA Today Bestselling author J.D. Hollyfield comes a devilishly spicy, enemies-to-lovers romance about overcoming the past, undeniable attraction, and finding love in the untimeliest of ways.

A best friend, a stalker, and a bodyguard walk into a bar…

Current status: Living my best life. *Flips hair* What more could a girl want?

Just kidding.

My life has gone to shit. All the fun, late nights, and single life come to a screeching halt when I find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, thanks to my overbearing best friend, I’ve adopted a guard dog to keep me safe until they find the guy who attacked me.

Insert Tate Deveraux, my newest inconvenience. He’s brawny, not bad on the eyes, and a pain in my ass. Not only am I stuck with him until I’m out of danger, but he’s moving in with me.

He’s become a nuisance in my life and needs to go—stalker be damned. So do the urges to strip him naked and see if the rumors about hand size hold true. I blame my crush on booze and the kiss that should have never happened.

The simmering attraction between us is undeniable, but he’s made it clear I’m just a job. With lines being crossed and my life at stake, I guess I’ll find out if he’s better at keeping me safe or sated.

***THIS IS A STANDALONE NOVEL that interconnects with POWER by J.D. Hollyfield. You do not need to read POWER to enjoy Hatemates, but it is always preferred to get the full experience! Enjoy! ***

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter one

Mindy

“That’s a wrap!”

I inwardly groan and slide off the bed to grab my robe. Chad comes up behind me, clasping his hand around my arm. “You were great today, babe. Wanna get a drink after—?”

“Not a chance.” I snatch my arm away. “And if you try that shit again, I’ll cut your dick off.” I turn on my heel and walk off the set. Once upon a time, this job made sense. I was young and wild, so why not make extra cash working on low-level movie sets? At least, that’s what I told myself they were. It sounded way better than porn. Ugh. Even I wince at that fact. But for the record, I don’t do full-on filth. There’s no begging Big Daddy to give it to me in nasty places while moaning until he fills me up. I’m not that desperate for cash.

I work in soft porn—because throwing “soft” in front makes it less sleazy. For the most part, I just have to pet and be petted. Simple as that.

“Oh, come on. You were feelin’ it.”

I flick him off over my shoulder. Chad has been pushing the envelope lately, and I’ve had enough. My contract states no penetration unless I say so—and I never plan to say so. But my contract is up in a couple months, and Russell, my boss, wants me to up my game. The problem is, I want out. Unfortunately, my bills tell me to stay the fuck where I am. There’s no way the income I bring in at my other job as a bartender is going to cut it when I’m drowning in debt with both jobs.

I tighten my robe as I walk past another set. Clarissa, who has no limits in her contract, is being twisted like a pretzel and pummeled from all angles. I cringe, picking up my pace.

I hit the shared dressing room and bump into Gretchen as she walks out. “Hey, girl. In a hurry?”

“Just need a shower to wash off Chad’s disgusting hands.”

“Ew. Is he being a creep again?”

“Again? He never stopped. And anytime I complain to Russell, he blows me off and brings up my contract.”

“Have you decided what you’re going to do?”

“No. Not yet.” But I have. I’m going to walk away. I have to. Who I was when I started this journey and the woman I am now are not the same. My life is different. I want things. Real things. A stable job. Someone in my life. And no man wants to date a woman who spends her days naked in front of a camera. I want a steady relationship. A cuddle buddy. Someone I can make stupid lasagna recipes I cut out from a corny Marie Claire magazine. I want to be domesticated.

God! My younger self would keel over in shock at hearing me admit that.

“You’ll figure it out. I have to go, though. I’m running late. Russell has me with a new guy and wants us to get familiar before we shoot.”

“Yep. Later.” I jump in the shower and stand under the stream, letting the steaming water scorch the feeling of Chad’s wandering hands from my skin, then wrap a towel around myself and walk back to the dressing room. My feet stall, and I almost drop my things when I see a large vase filled with red roses on my vanity. Chills spread up my arms. My eyes shift to the other women in the room. “Did anyone see who put these here?” The girls shake their heads. “Seriously? No one?”

“We’re not here to monitor your admirers,” Mary says snidely, returning to over applying her lipstick. Bitch. I look back at the bouquet. My stomach churns, and I wrap my arms tighter around myself as I walk to my dressing table, set my things down, and reach for the card, unfolding it.

I want you to spread for me. Soon, you will.

I toss the paper to the ground as if the words burn me. Uneasiness settles in my core. This is the third delivery of roses this month. Same creepy note. No signature.

Getting fan-mail isn’t entirely out of the ordinary, but this…

Snatching up the card, I crumple it in my fist and toss it in the trash with the roses. Grabbing my things, I rush to dress and head out, gazing down at my phone. It’s almost two in the morning. I exit out the side of the studio, tugging my jacket tighter around me, and hurry down the alley, starting the four-block trek to my car. I walk through the now deserted parking lot, and a gust of wind rushes through me, forcing me to grab at my purse strap.

I’ve done this walk numerous times, but tonight, an eeriness lingers in the air. Picking up my pace, I slide between two cars and take a shortcut through an apartment alley. A loud bang sounds, and I jerk, looking behind me. A cat jumps off a trashcan and scurries between the dumpsters. My hand flies to my chest, and I release a deep breath. “Relax, Parks,” I console myself. I’m not a scaredy cat or someone afraid to be alone. The studio isn’t in the best part of town, but there’s never been any reason to worry.
Easton Cruz was my world.
Our souls collided the day he walked into that bar.
His presence made me whole in a way I hadn’t been before.
He was my forever.

Until one day, he wasn’t.

The beautiful life we were starting to create was destroyed by betrayal.

And after two long years, I was still trying to move on and put my shattered pieces from his deception back together.

Except when the man you hate haunts your dreams, moving on is impossible.

Maybe that’s why my friends tricked me into going for a secluded weekend in the woods. A vacation to heal and finally move on.

But this trip was anything but serene and healing. It was more like a nightmare.

I vowed never to let him in enough to hurt me again. Because I hated him.

The problem is, I loved him more…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Sometimes goodbye is a second chance.

-Shinedown

Chapter one

Callie

I always imagined how I would die. A thrill-seeking bungy jumping accident. Meh, there’s not a bone of thrill in my body. Being attacked by a shark while deep-sea scuba diving. Scratch that. I hate water. Even something as simple as being in my husband’s arms at the frail age of ninety. I’d have to have a husband first, let alone a boyfriend, for that to happen.

But I never imagined complete boredom would be the death of me.

As I stare across the table at my blind date, listening to him list the ingredients of his mother’s meatloaf, I realize that being eaten by a shark would have been better.

“You should come over for meatloaf night. Sometimes, when I’m good, she adds nutmeg to it. Gives it a super sweet taste. But don’t tell her I told you her secret ingredient. She’d have to kill you.”

“Oh, I would never,” I say because if I ever find myself at his mother’s house, eating said meatloaf, the bigger topic would be how to clean blood out of her tablecloth because I would have stabbed a fork into my jugular before my first bite.

It’s official. I’m done with dating sites. I’m done with dating, period. Done pretending I’m not destined to become anything but a single, lonely wallflower and I should start investing in a colony of cats now.

“Wow, this key lime pie is pretty good. Not as good as my mom’s. She likes to splash a bit of—”

My phone, set to the highest volume, goes off right on time. “Oh, shoot. Hold that thought.” I look at my screen to see Tory’s goofy face. “Hey Tory, what’s up?”

“Ring-a-ling! Tell me he’s the one.”

“Oh, my God. Is he okay?”

“Wow, so it’s bad?”

“Oh, that’s awful. What hospital did they take him to?”

“Damn. I really thought this dude was the one.”

“Yes, of course. I’m on a date, but I’m sure he’ll understand.”

“That poor dude—”

I hang up on Tory. “I’m so sorry. Something happened to a friend, and I need to go. Hope you understand. I had a great time, though.” I place my napkin on the table and stand, grabbing my purse. “Thanks again for dinner. I’ll call you.” And I turn to rush out of there.

“Hey, before you leave, I think your part of the meal came out to thirty-seven dollars and forty-two cents. I already divided the tip.”

***

I plow through the doors of Ray’s Bar, brushing the snow off my jacket. The dive bar is as divey as it gets, but they still manage to spruce it up with lights for the holiday season. I look around the bar and spot Tory and Ashley at our regular pub table. Ashley sees me first, and her lips downward-dog into a sad face. When Tory turns, her eyes light up with humor. “Man, we were sitting here planning your engagement party. What happened?”

I flick Tory off and take the empty seat next to Ash. “We never would’ve worked out because I’m pretty sure he’s in love with his mother and masturbates to her meatloaf on the daily.”

Ashley’s nose scrunches while Tory lets off an obnoxious laugh. “I mean, is his mom good-looking? And I can’t imagine boinking a meatloaf would be enjoyable. Jamming your dick into the mushy loaf—”

“I said to it, not in it—it doesn’t matter. Steve was a complete no, and as if the date could get any worse, he made me go Dutch on the bill.”

“No,” Ashley gasps.

“Yeah! Not to mention, he added a slice of key lime pie to take home to his mother, and it accidentally was put on my part of the bill!”

Tory leans back in her chair, taking a long sip of her vodka tonic. “Damn. That’s ruthless.”

“Tell me about it.” I wave to Sherry, our favorite waitress, who gives me the thumbs-up that my espresso martini is on the way. “I’m officially done with those dating sites.”

“Oh, don’t give up, Cal. Mr. Right is out there.”

“I’m pretty sure Mr. Right is a fictional character in one of your romance books and doesn’t truly exist. At least not for me.” Gotta love a friend who thinks that happily ever afters grow on trees. “I’m claiming spinstership. Mark it right now.”
a possession of control, authority, or influence over others.

Prologue

Theo

Seven years ago. . .

I pull up to Sullivan’s, parking the shiny new Lexus my father had waiting when I returned home. Damn, it’s good to be back. Not that I’m here long. One summer, then it’s Europe for the next two years. Poor me, I know. Alfred Monroe only wants the best for his son.

Climbing out, I toss my keys to the valet. “Good evening, Mr. Monroe.”

“Looking good, George,” I say over my shoulder before heading inside. Glancing at my phone, I cuss under my breath. I’m already late. I find him at the table always reserved for him. “Father,” I greet, taking in the older man and blonde bombshell at his side. I didn’t know we would have guests.

“You must be Theo. Charles Hill.” The man stands, and I shake his hand. “This is my daughter, Alana.”

I gaze over her, offering my signature smile. Damn, I wouldn’t mind sliding into that after a few cocktails. I bet I could have her sucking me off in the bathroom before dessert.

“Son, sit. We have a lot to discuss.” I take a seat next to my father.

“I hear congratulations are in order.”

“Thanks,” I reply to Charles. Two days ago, I graduated second in my class. Not that my undergrad degree matters. My future is already paved for me.

“Pretty impressive. Tennis and heavyweight rowing? You sure made a name for yourself up there.”

“Yeah, not too shabby.” I steal a glance at his daughter and wink.

“And now you’re off to France to complete your master’s. What brought that on?”

I debate giving him the real answer, but I’m sure my father would disapprove of me telling his friend and his hot daughter what I really plan to do with my time: drink and fuck my way across France before I fall into line at my father’s company. Instead, I reply with a more sophisticated answer. “It’s important to be fluent in all forms of business. Going international will allow me to expand my knowledge and provide more insight into future business deals as MIC expands its investments across the ocean.”

He smiles, and my father nods his approval. “What brings you two to dinner tonight?” I ask.

“We have some of the same business interests and ideas about a prosperous future. Nothing we need to bore you two with. In fact, why don’t you and Alana go enjoy yourselves? I’m sure you can show her a nice evening.”

My night just turned in the right direction. “Of course. I’d love to show you around if you’re up for it.”

Her cat-like smile says she’s on the same page. “That sounds like a wonderful idea.”

Hmmm. . . polite and accommodating. Key attributes for being wild in bed.

Not a bad start to the summer. She’ll be a nice treat.

Two years later. . .

I tug the strap of my carry-on bag up my shoulder. The flight from Paris was long, and I’m in dire need of a hot shower. I take my phone off airplane mode, and it immediately begins to ding.

Claire: Love you. Text me when you land <3

A. Monroe: Come straight to the office as soon as you land.

He can’t even give me a second before making demands. So much for the long shower and possible nap.

Me: I will when I land tomorrow.

A. Monroe: Now.

How the hell does he even know I’m home? I told him my flight didn’t get in until tomorrow for this reason. I knew he would throw me into the mix the second I stepped on American soil. I wanted a day to settle into the condo I had set up while I was in France.

Me: Be there in an hour.

I shoot off a text to Claire.

Me: Love you too, baby. Just landed. Have to stop by the office. Call you when I get to my condo. Maybe send me some nudes to help me through my day.

I slide my phone into my pocket. My plans of gallivanting across Europe changed the day I walked into a small café in France. With her musical accent and kind smile, Claire took my order and stole my heart. She brought a feeling of peace into my life that I hadn’t realized I needed. She was gentle and not at all wild, unlike what I was used to, and it only made me love her more.

The last two years went by too fast, the weight of our reality hanging over us. But I plan on fixing that. When she flies over for a couple days, I plan to introduce her to my father and then ask her to marry me. Leaving her home country won’t be easy. It’s all she’s ever known. But I can give her a good life. Offer her anything she can imagine. With her as part of my future, she’ll want for nothing.
Ben
Love? Yeah, hard pass. It has the power to take everything from you—even yourself. It’s why I stay clear.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of insta-lust. The kind that only lasts as long as the heat does. Come morning? It’s a whole new day. That’s why, when I meet the perfect girl at a wedding, I know, for the next couple of hours, I’m going to love every little succulent inch of her.
That’s until she tricks me, leaving me high and dry, literally.
It’s now my mission to find out who she is.
Makayla
My life couldn’t be going any worse. Falling apart would put it mildly. Comparing it to a dumpster fire sounds more accurate. And now, I’m being forced to move back home, a place I swore I would never return to.
When the one person I’ve spent my entire life hating walks back into my life, it finally pushes me over the edge.
He’s still so arrogant. So full of himself. And still has a way of lighting a fire inside me.
I need to stop looking at him the way he’s looking at me. But everything will go up in flames once he finds out who I am.

But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house,

you can never tell.

-Joan Crawford

Prologue

Thirteen years ago. . .

Ben

“In your dreams, bro.”

“Better get used to me being in yours. ’Cause this one’s goin’ pro. Coach said a scout from the Giants was at the game on Sunday. Don’t worry. I’ll send you a signed football.” I toss the ball down the dorm hallway and walk into my room. “S’up, Cade,” I say to my new roommate as he passes me on the way out. It’s weird not having Chase here, but he’s a cool guy.

“S’up. Your mom called. Said it was urgent. I’m late for class. Catch up with you later.”

“Thanks, dude.” I toss my backpack on my bed. What the hell is so urgent this time? Last time, it was her Easter menu. The time before that was whether I wanted new bedsheets before I came home for break. She throws "urgent" around like confetti to make sure I call back.

Flopping onto my bed, I pull out my cell phone. Five missed calls. I hit send on the callback. It rings three times before she answers.

“What can be this urgent—?”

“Ben.” The anguish in her voice slices through me, and I shoot upright.

“What? What’s wrong?”

“Ben. . .”

“Mom, what’s wrong?”

“He’s gone, Ben. He’s gone—”

“Who’s gone?”

“Your father. . .”

Chapter 1

Ben

Present Day

Levi and Hannah’s Wedding. . .

I love weddings.

Wait, let me rephrase that. I love anything with an open bar. Taking a deep pull of my vodka tonic, I scan the room. My lips curl up when I spot Levi and Chase huddled together by the bar. If one thing is solid in my life, it’s my boys. Not many people can say they’ve been practically inseparable since they were still shitting in their pants. Almost thirty years later, everyone has fallen down the rabbit hole of chicks, married life, and kids.

Except me.

My choice, of course. Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure it’s all bells and whistles being sucked into the love web. Kipley, who married his high school sweetheart, has had a smile on his face since he and Stacey crossed paths in the eighth grade. Well, maybe not once or twice when two of his best friends slept with his family members behind his back and got caught. I shake my head at Levi and Chase. They both got a taste of Kip’s right hook.

I take in Levi—the man of the hour. His shit-eating grin confirms he’s the happiest man alive right now. He should be. We are at his wedding, and he just married the love of his life.

Then I look over at Chase, my other best friend. He hasn’t lost that scowl all night. Following his eyes, I spot Bridget, Kip’s cousin and Chase’s once-upon-a-time one-night-stand-turned-his-entire-reason-for-existing. Life can sideswipe you in the most unexpected ways.

Don’t I know it.

Staring back at my group and seeing them all so damn happy, a tightness forms in my chest. They were this happy. Then he was gone. . . I slam my drink and sway. That one may have tipped me over the edge from drunk to hammered. Which, again, is why I love weddings.

One foot in front of the other, I make my way toward my guys.

“Bill, come here.”

Kipley’s strange aunt steps in front of me, and I almost barrel over her. I squint one eye and look down at her, internally grunting. “Hey, Aunt Getty. It’s Ben.”

“You know, Bill, I dated a firefighter back in my day. Before my William. He used to show me how to put out fires.” She reaches up and pats my arm. “He was very talented with his mouth.” Then she winks at me.

“Uh. . . that’s great. I actually see someone in distress.” That person being me. “I. . . need to go. Enjoy the wedding.” I slide out of her hold and make a beeline for the bar.

“What are you girls talking about?” I say as I walk up to Chase and Levi. They look like they’re about to cry and hug it out.

“When Chase set me up in the closet,” Levi replies.

I burst out in a laugh. “Rebecca was so pissed. Didn’t she slap you?”

“Hell yeah. But that was the least of my worries.” Kip’s wedding seems like it was just yesterday. Levi was sulking over a bad breakup, so Chase did what he does best and set Levi up with a surprise hook-up in the supply closet during the reception. Too bad—or good, for Levi—Hannah intervened, and yeah. . . the rest is history.

“Well, it all worked out. I mean, maybe not for Rebecca—”

“What are you all laughing about?” Kip walks up.

“Your wedding when Levi—”

Levi cuts me off. “When I drank too much and barfed in one of the centerpieces.” I hold in a chuckle. Kip still has no idea his best friend railed his sister without knowing it was his sister at his wedding.
And now, I’m trapped in his web of desire and temptation.

Hazel

“Ring around the rosie, a pocket full of posies…more, Mommy, more!”

I sit on the park bench, watching a mother and daughter bond over a stupid nursery rhyme. The happy cries of a little girl soak into my mind, and I lose myself in her laughter. Her eyes shine bright with joy as her mother spins her round and round in anticipation of them falling into the soft grass.

“Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!” she screams in delight. Their matching dresses fluff as air takes flight up their skirts, and they playfully fall to the ground. Their happiness is a sharp reminder of the life I never had.

When the woman cups her little girl’s cheek, my eyes stay glued to her lips. Three little words fall off her tongue—I love you. Another ping to my chest—a reminder of my mother and her cruelty.

“Can you sing me the London Bridges one, mommy?”

“Grow up, child. Don’t you know nursery rhymes are evil?”

“What does evil mean, mommy?”

“It means they aren’t meant to comfort you; they’re meant to scare you. All your silly pleading to sing to you. Three Blind Mice? It’s about animal mutilation. Rock-a-bye Baby? It’s about killing children. Oh, and your favorite, Jack and Jill? That one’s about murder-suicide. God, Hazel. Be more like me. Close your eyes and dream about finding a man who will deal with all your neediness. Lord knows you’ll need a brave man to handle you.”

That was my childhood. No warm embraces. No dates at the park. No bullshit endearments. Where other normal kids were full of love and affection, I was running on empty.

The lack of affection from my alcoholic mother. Lack of attention from my workaholic father. Rejection is a hard pill to swallow—especially when it’s from two people who should be suffocating me with it. The only thing I was suffocating from was loneliness.

Growing up, I didn’t set out to be a wild child. I was just so desperate to be loved, I went and searched for it in all the wrong places. Gaining Daddy’s attention by getting caught underage drinking. Flaunting my young body in front of anything and anyone who would take notice. Acting out was the only way I knew how to get them to notice me. And so I kept doing it.

Did my parents love me? It depends on which one we’re talking about.

My dad has always shown me love through materialistic ways. When I was young, he would load me up with all the limited-edition dolls. Buy up the entire world of all things pink. Get ponies and every princess alive at my birthday parties. His material love was endless. And still is.

My mother’s love, on the other hand, was nonexistent. I was the vacation disruption, the sobriety killer, the brat who took her youth, the child who ruined her body.

Family of the year, right? Far from it. I couldn’t stop landing myself in pile after pile of shame, choosing the wrong friends and the wrong boyfriends. I found myself so desperate for affection that I allowed my private yoga instructor to fill my head with such sweet words that I gave him my virginity at the young age of sixteen.

I should also mention that he had been fucking my mom at the same time. Probably the only thing she and I ever had in common.

It wasn’t the worst news to get slapped with. My dad caught wind and instantly kicked her ass out. The funny thing is, she didn’t fight. Just left without a goodbye or a smidge of regret.

I can’t paint my entire life as a sob story. I did have my dad. He just struggled to show me affection in ways I desperately needed. After mom left, things got better. I think it just took some time for him to notice anything outside of work. And I guess finding out your wife is cheating on you will do that.

And things did get better. Dad stepped up. It was the two of us against the world. The amount of pizza and ice cream nights were endless. The only problem was he was on conference calls ninety percent of the time. I couldn’t fault him for who he was. He worked very hard to create a life where we would want for nothing. It’s a shame the only thing I wanted was priceless.

Congrats on the birth of my daddy issues. It’s a boy.

—Unknown

Violet

I’ve been on campus for less than an hour, and I already hate college. Sweat drips down my back, soaking my white tank top. The entire freshman class now knows I’m wearing a pink bra. Not that I give a shit. I shake my tits at a kid walking past, his eyes glued to my chest, causing him to drop his Tupperware containers.

It’s move-in day, and go figure, I’m on my own. Mommy Dearest overbooked herself, which left me to hitch a ride all the way up to campus and unpack everything myself. A whole whopping four boxes. Standing in the center of the tiny dorm room, I lift my shirt, using it as a towel to wipe at the beaded sweat above my brow.

“Oh…um, excuse me.” A deep, alluring voice has me lowering my tank just enough for my eyes to lock on the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen. Dark, thick hair, the bluest of eyes, chiseled cheeks, muscled chest, arms…Jesus, I think I may have soaked my panties.

“Sorry. Is this room four twenty-two?”

Even if it wasn’t, my answer would be yes. God yes. “It is. Are you lost or something?” I realize I’ve yet to bring my tank top down, leaving my pink-covered breasts on full display. He’s dressed in a pair of fitted jeans and a casual t-shirt, accentuating the enormous amount of time he must spend at the gym.

He studies me with unwavering attention. The I see something I shouldn’t like and can’t seem to look away kind of attention. And I love every second of it. My heart skips, and a tremor of temptation travels up and down my spine. Sadly, he catches his mistake and forces his eyes up to mine. Clearing his throat, he says, “Oh…uh, no. Actually, right where I need to be.”

Well…isn’t today my lucky day.

There’s no denying the instant attraction between us. His eyes burn with a fire of undeniable lust, igniting something between us. I bite the inside of my cheek, taking a step closer. I bet he smells divine. Like spice and all man. “Hmmm…I think I can help you with—”

“Oh, good! You found it!” Our unspoken allure gets interrupted by a petite blonde entering my room and I lower my shirt. “Hey, you must be Violet. I’m Hazel, your roommate. I see you’ve already met my dad.”

My eyes shift from the peppy blonde to the man standing next to her. Dad. An indescribable blast of excitement flows through me at the indecent way he drank me in before getting caught by his daughter. I lick my lower lip, taking in my new roommate’s daddy. “Yes, we sure have.” My words hold a lot more meaning than she picks up on. His eyes shift, breaking from mine, and I stretch my hand out to him. “Hi. I’m Violet. Nice to meet you.”

He snaps out of his haze, reaching out. “Mr. Winters. Heath. Nice to meet you.” Our hands connect, and a spark zaps through my veins.

“Awesome! I’m super excited. It’s gonna be great. Are your parents here too?” Mr. Winters instantly retreats. Buzzkill, Hazel.

“No. Actually, it’s just my mom, and she got stuck at work.” Translation: she had any and everything better to do than help her daughter with her first important journey to school.

“Oh, okay. My dad and I can help you if you need stuff brought up. He’s the best. Just ask, and he’ll help you with anything.”

Oh, I bet he will. His cheeks flame with guilt, which tells me his sweet daughter would most definitely frown upon the fact that he just eye-fucked her new roommate. I probably shouldn’t encourage it, but the butterflies have yet to settle in my belly. Acting like this only confirms the horrible things my mother has accused me of. My mother always hated me for the way I looked. Blamed me for supposedly being a temptress to the revolving door of men she had in and out of our home. Did I ever encourage it? To piss her off, yes. Did all the drunk men she brought home ever attempt something with me? All the time. Did I ever pursue an older man? Never.

Until now.

What the heck has gotten into you, Violet? Great question. This is super inappropriate. He’s probably twice my age. “Thanks,” is all that comes out of my mouth. My heart hammers, and I suddenly become insecure. I adjust my tank top, wishing it wasn’t soaked through, and try to busy myself with my stuff while they finish bringing up the rest of her things.

“Whoever made this stupid drawer needs to go back to design school,” I grumble, losing my battle with the fifteen random pieces that came with an Ikea nightstand. My nose picks up a hint of spice, and I look up to find Mr. Winters kneeling next to me.
He was a dare she couldn’t walk away from. She was a game he was determined to win.
Jensen Stone was thriving in her first year of college. So thirsty for success she could already taste the achievements on her lips. Nothing would get in the way of her dreams, not even the social pressures of pledging. Until one night, she finds herself in the lion’s den of sorority row, accepting a dare she knew she couldn’t complete.
Damien Cross was bored. He no longer craved the dominance and control he had swirling in the palms of his powerful hands. He was determined to walk away from the empire he'd spent the last ten years building. What he didn’t factor in was the unexpected distraction. He might be angry at her inconvenient timing, but the urge to break the new toy dangling in front of him was all consuming. It wouldn’t hurt to play one last time.
One night. His rules. Will she obey his demands to fulfill a dare?
Or will she realize his dark tastes are anything but exquisite?

Books by Author:

J.D. Hollyfield Books

“YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING me!” Christine, my best friend and now college roommate, squeals, throwing her purse on the floor of our tiny dorm room. She dances over to the full-length mirror tucked away in the corner of our shoebox-sized living quarters and checks to see how her hair fared after our long night. “I’m gonna love college!”

That’s funny, because I’m thinking the complete opposite.

Just over a month ago, Christine and I relocated to the Windy City to attend our first year at the University of Illinois. I couldn’t wait to rise above and conquer. I had dreams. Goals to take over the world…or at least a small portion of it. Christine, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to become a sister. Both had different plans, both of us just as passionate.

When I thought about attending college in Chicago, I pictured historic building tours, breweries, and prestigious university lectures. Nowhere in my plans was there room for Greek life. Pledging. Sororities. And if it weren’t for my best friend who begged and pleaded that we just try it out, I wouldn’t have been caught dead participating in formal pledge week. A whole week wasted on a concept where mean girls rule the world. I wanted nothing to do with it. I wanted to hang in the parks and capture views of the gigantic fountain. Take a trip to the lake and snapshots of people enjoying the beautiful weather and sand. Instead, I spent it swearing to stay strong while holding my morals tightly in place, vowing not to fall for the long list of what we must become to rise up in the college social ladder.

And in college, it’s exactly where a huge chunk of girls lose their way. Sorority life. A clan of girls who want you to be their sister for nothing more than to capture our souls and turn us into their own personal puppets.

Christine and I pledged. Let me rephrase that. Christine pledged. I may have been forced to participate in the nonsense, but the end result would always be the same: I, Jenson Stone, refuse to be anyone’s puppet. I had zero intention of becoming one of them. A fake form of what guys crave. Nothing was real about them, and not a single ounce of their once upon a time kindness was intact. I like comparing them as the start of a Stepford wife—a mold of a girl they once were. I wonder what parents think of their precious daughters who come home after months of being away with attitudes, much shorter skirts, and a sexual track record that would have their late grandmother rolling deep down in her grave.

College changes people. That’s just a known fact. But a sorority transforms them. Turns once nice girls into mean bitches who want nothing more than to ruin others just to feel ahead. Prettier. Better dressed. It never ends. I know you ask how the hell I know, since clearly, I have no interest, nor want to become one of them. I know it because I’ve spent the last couple weeks observing. Dragged along to each sisterhood get-together: social mixer, pajama party, formal, semi-formal, dance, luncheon, pancake breakfast. Jesus, it didn’t stop. While I was rolling my eyes, not falling for their bullshit spiel, my best friend was asking where she signed her life away.

And now, I stand in my dorm room after yet another party, listening to Christine go on and on about how amazing the life of a sorority sister is going to be. And I can’t disagree more.

“Did you see how awesome that house was? Like, we could live there! That could be us. They all share clothes, Brittany told me. I mean, never-ending closets! And, oh em gee, don’t get me started on all the brand names. Stephanie, the redhead? She was decked out head to toe in Coach.”

I toss my jacket on my bed and head to my closet. The last thing I want to do is spend another second in the outfit Christine forced me to wear. “Yeah, I also saw all the scrunched-up, Botoxed faces eyeing me like the outcast. They were probably horrified to think I was there because I actually wanted in their cult club.” I peel off the black halter top, tossing it into her dirty laundry bin.

“Jensen, come on. They were not. Give them a chance! I think this’ll be good for us. We can make a lot of friends doing this.”

“Friends?” I turn to her, offering her my raised eyebrows. “Christine, those are not our friends. More like blood-sucking vampires who want to use us as their little slaves. Did you hear what some of the girls were talking about? The hazing? No thanks. I’m sorry, but I’m out. I was never even in to begin with.”
