Katie can’t trust her father, not after he threatened to have her committed if she told people how he treated her. He’s a man with influence and power, so she decides to hide out at Farrow Haven, the safe house for women. When she arrives, she realizes that she could be putting everyone in danger. Now she has no choice but to trust the clinic’s doctor to keep her safe. The only problem is, he knows all her hidden secrets.
Wynn knows who Katie is the moment she steps into his office. What she doesn’t know is that he’s keeping secrets of his own. He’s going to make things right by keeping her safe, but the one thing he can’t keep hidden are his feelings for her.

Someone call a doctor because these two are burning up the pages. What else are they supposed to do while locked in a house with no power? Get back in the ring one more time for the ultimate showdown… don’t worry, she’s worth fighting for

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

KATE

What has become of me? I stare into the mirror, not recognizing myself while wondering how I ended up here. A few months ago, I was in a whole other country, away at school. I'd been fairly neutral about boarding school but only because I went back and forth on the reasons for it. At times I'd ask myself if they shipped me off because I was so much of a bother, and other times I'd convince myself it was for the better. I was getting an education that most people only dreamed of, so I tried to focus on that.

Besides, if I was at home, I’d likely be just as lonely. My parents were always busy. My mother was fully invested in charity work, which always seemed to be more about the parties than any actual charity. I guess the appearance of it was what mattered to her the most.

My father is one of the best lawyers in the city, but when he decided to take a shot at running for senator, that’s when everything went wrong. Or was it when my mother died? I'm not so sure anymore since it's all still a blur. The last few months went by in a blink, but the days hadn't felt that way. They'd felt long.

I reach up to touch my black eye and wince. It's worse today. Part of my cheek has a bruise that formed overnight. My father always had a temper. My parents could be volatile toward each other, but I guess now that my mom is gone, he chose to take it out on me.

When I was told my mother had fallen down the stairs, at first I was shocked. But it hadn’t taken long for my mind to wander. The toxicologist report said she was drunk, but who knows what happened to make her fall. I’ll never have the answers because my father has far too many friends in high places. He’ll soon be a person in high places as well.

The grieving widower image was selling well for him too. Despite seeing him upset a few times, he’s moved past it quickly. Maybe his guilty conscience is what had him upset in the first place. Either way, it’s been six months, and he seems fine. He might not be going out with women publicly, but he’s been inviting them back to the house.

When I found out my mother died, I came home, but he hasn’t let me go back to finish out my semester at school. Thankfully it was close to the end, and of course they let me finish up online. My father simply had to ask, and they were quick to agree.

At first I thought he wanted me home because it was a big change. It didn't take me long to realize I was now a prop for him to use in his bid to become senator. It’s only the two of us now, and he tried prancing me around like a pony.

With my mother gone, I believe all the anger he kept bottled up is now aimed at me. There’s nothing that I can do correctly in his eyes. However, to the rest of the world, he appears to be a loving father that’s helping his daughter through this tragic time.

Things came to a head when he tried to get me to go on a date with one of the partners in his firm. The man was fifty years old. I told my father that going on a date with a man so much older than me would look horrible to the public, but he didn’t care. He told me that if I didn’t comply, the consequence would be his daughter having a mental breakdown and needing to be committed.

A knock at the door jolts me back to reality. Yesterday, while my father was preoccupied with a woman he brought home, I snuck out. I don't know if he's noticed I'm gone yet, but it's not as though he'd be able to take me out in public. Not with how badly my face is bruised. It would be horrible for his image and start all kinds of rumors.

I smooth out my hair to make myself presentable, but it's stupid. I'm in Farrow Haven, so it’s not like I have anyone to impress. They’ve already seen my black eye, and thankfully they didn’t push for more details when I'd gotten here yesterday. The main thing they wanted to know was if I was an adult. Apparently, they have a separate haven for teens on the run.

Years ago, I met a female officer that was working at an event my mother hosted. In a bold move, I reached out and confided in her because I knew she'd understand. She knew who my father was and that there wasn't going to be much the police could do.
Juliet Farrow has run away from home and is in desperate need of a place to stay. Hiding in the women’s locker room at a boxing gym seems like a good idea until she’s caught by the owner. Maverick Bolland is a giant and could easily throw her out, but instead, he offers her a job and a safe place to sleep. Is it wrong for her to hope it’s the same place he’s sleeping too?

Maverick might host a few underground fights, but he’s not one to get his hands dirty. At least not until he discovers Juliet hiding in his gym. Suddenly he’s ready to take on anyone who threatens her, including the family that’s hunting her down. Falling in love wasn’t the plan, but he’s not about to let her go

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

JULIET

I stand outside of the police station, not wanting to go inside, but I don’t have much of a choice. My stepmother has reported me missing, and I don’t understand why.

The second I could escape her hold, I did, but I have no idea why they are trying to find me. They loathe my existence. The only thing I want is to be free of them so I can start a new life. What that life will be, I don’t have a clue, but I want to be able to find out. I can’t live with them hovering over my head.

Once upon a time I thought my stepmother liked me, but that mask quickly fell when my father passed away. My dad wasn’t the best father. He devoted so much of his life to his job, but the time we did have together was precious to me. I don’t think he intended to have a child he’d have to raise on his own, so he shuffled through a handful of women before finding Rina and making her presence permanent.

For the past three years, Rina has done everything she can to hurt me. Normally it’s all a mental game, but there have been a few instances when she was drinking and things got physical. I kept my mouth shut because I wanted to make her happy. I kept telling myself that if I was better, she’d love me.

It might have taken me a few years, but I’ve come to terms with that never happening. The final straw to truly escape came after she remarried six months ago. Her new husband left me alone for the most part. I could have been invisible for all he cared, but his son is another story. Brock comes and goes from the home as he pleases. The home I grew up in, which is no longer mine. The place that once gave me comfort is now a hell house.

Wanting to get this over, I climb the steps to the police station and pass by a few officers lingering outside. The place isn’t too busy, and when I go to the front desk and tell them I think I’ve been reported missing, they have a uniformed officer come speak to me. A female officer appears soon after and then leads me to a desk that’s out in the open with other desks around it. Most of the ones near us are empty as I take a seat, and she begins to ask me questions.

“Juliet Farrow,” she says, repeating my name before typing it in the computer. She asks for my date of birth next, and the moment she finds me, her demeanor changes. Her eyebrows rise, and her eyes flick from her computer screen back to me.

“What? Does it say I’m dead now?” I joke, but she doesn’t seem amused.

“That’s a big bag you got there,” Officer Niks says, ignoring my question and nodding down to the bag I dropped at my feet. It’s filled with clothes and toiletries. That’s about it.

“It’s all I have,” I admit.

“Why don’t you come with me?” Niks stands, and I hesitantly do the same.

I follow her to one of the rooms over to the side before stepping in with her. When she closes it behind us, I shift on my feet.

“You’re freaking me out.” If I’m getting arrested, at least I’ll have a warm place to sleep tonight, but I’d rather not have to stay in jail.

“Here’s the thing,” she says as she leans against the table behind her. The room is bare, and in the back of my mind I wonder if this is where they do interrogations. “Your stepmother reported you missing.”

“Yeah, I know,” I say, still confused.

“Then she came back the next day and said you stole a few items from her.”

“What?”

I don’t know why I’m shocked. In fact, I should have expected this. This is why I couldn’t simply walk out the front door. I had to sneak out, but I knew full well she would become unhinged. There was no other choice for me, though, because I knew that Brock was closing in on me. The longer I was there, the closer I could feel him getting.

“She reported a necklace and a matching ring.”

“The emeralds,” I say, already knowing what she’s referring to.

My father was a wealthy man, and he was smitten with Rina. She put on a good act. So good that I’m not sure if she actually loved him or not. Maybe at some point she did. I’m not really clear what all was in my father’s will because I haven’t seen it, and for all I know, my dad might not have left me a penny. What I do know is that he would have given me that emerald set because it belonged to my mother. Sadly, I have very few memories of her, and I often wonder if they’re real or ones I’ve made up after hearing stories about how she was with me.

You’re our favorite Book Snob.

Chapter One

DOVE

"Ouch!" I squeak as I poke myself in the eye. I drop the contact and let out a deep sigh.

"What are you doing?"

I glance over at Tia with my one good eye. She’s leaning against the bathroom door frame, looking at me with curiosity. Her jet-black hair is in messy tangles, and she’s still in her pajamas.

"Trying to put these stupid contacts in," I tell her and grunt. Turning around, I blink a few times and look into the sink for the contact I dropped. I don’t see it anywhere and frustration gnaws at me.

"Is this about Mr. Venti?" she asks.

My cheeks flame at the thought of him. I’d given him the nickname before I found out who he was. Every time I saw him he was ordering a venti coffee, so it stuck. His real name is Beau, which sounds like a Nicholas Sparks hero, and he’s got the face to match.

I meet her eyes in the mirror. She is studying me with a smile on her face. Normally she’s got on heavy eye makeup with dark lipstick to match her dark eyes. She’s covered in tattoos, but somehow she still looks like the girl next door. She’s got a baby face that sees everything, including right through me.

Clearing my throat, I try to focus on the task at hand and ignore the fact that Tia might be able to read my mind. I've had these contacts for months, but every time I try to use them I give up. I can't ever get them in and once I do they drive me crazy.

She’s right though. He is the reason. I’m trying not to look so young because I know Beau has to be at least ten years older than me.

"Dove." Tia says my name softly. "If he's been flirting with you already you don't need to change anything."

I bite my lip. I thought he'd been flirting with me. It's been going on for weeks but he never takes it any further. He hasn’t asked me on a date or even for my phone number. Maybe I’m reading it wrong and he’s just being nice. I'm terrible at flirting and knowing when a guy likes me.

It started off with smiles that turned into hellos. Soon we were small-talking and introducing ourselves to one another. Then last week he reached out and brushed my hair back away from my eyes, like it was the most natural thing on the planet. My heart stopped for a moment and I swear I can still feel the light brush of his fingers on my skin even a week later.

He’s ridiculously handsome and probably way out of my league. I work at a florist shop and he’s a lawyer. He dresses like he’s loaded and I’m sure he is. Everything about him is polished and put together. The one thing that strikes me as odd is that I’ve never seen a man so big in a suit before. He’s the size of a football player, but never once did I feel intimidated. When he looked at me with his soft brown eyes, with little lines at the corners, I felt so warm and happy.

I shake my head and come back to reality. We’re on two different playing fields, and I need to let go of the fantasy of him.

"You like this dress?" I ask her, turning so she can see it. “It's new.” It's a simple yellow sundress. It hugs tight on the top and flares out at my waist. I can wear pretty much whatever I want at the shop and I have a thing for dresses and bright colors. Ninety percent of my wardrobe consists of dresses identical to this, but I love them.

"It's adorable."

I huff at her response, picking up my glasses from beside the sink and sliding them on. "I didn't want to be adorable. I wanted to be sexy."

"You're wearing Converses," she laughs in response.

I look down at my shoes. I always wear shoes like these, or slip-ons. Especially to work. Sometimes I have to do a few deliveries and they work best for that. Plus, they’re comfy.
Nova is back home in Cheerful spinning her wheels after graduating college. She’s looking for direction, so when a friend reaches out about an open live-in nanny position, Nova takes it as a sign. It’s not until she arrives in the city and meets her new high-powered boss that she wonders if taking the job was a mistake. Kellan Eve might be handsome and rich, but the way he looks at her is way too overwhelming.

One phone call turns Kellan’s world upside down overnight. When he’s told he’s now the guardian of a ten-year-old niece he knew nothing about, he has to scramble to find help. With a demanding job and no support system, his only solution is to hire a live-in nanny. The arrival of Nova stirs something inside him that he never knew existed. Suddenly he’s seeing everything in a new light and is ready to make some big changes.

Welcome to Cheerful, a town that loves Christmas almost as much as it loves Happily Ever Afters. This is the place to be if you need a hefty dose of holiday cheer, or you’re looking to have your stocking stuffed. Grab your coziest pajamas and hot chocolate because it’s about to get festive

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

NOVA

This is my own doing. Apparently starting a New Year's resolution before New Year's jinxes it. I was so sure it was a sign when I was hanging out at the bakery with a couple of girlfriends. Yes, in a small town you can end up at the bakery hanging out. That said, Cheerful’s bakery is nothing to turn your nose up at. People travel in from the city for Molly’s treats alone.

Ope, that sounds wrong even in my head. I know Noah, Molly’s grumpy man, wouldn’t be too happy about the phrasing, but I digress. I was sipping on my sugar cookie coffee while my friends and I were discussing what our resolution ideas were.

I’ve been back in Cheerful for six months now after being born and raised in the quaint, adorable town. After I graduated with my early education degree, I came back home. There wasn't much of a choice since I had to get out of my dorm, but I wasn't sad about it. I missed home, and I’ve enjoyed my time being back. Living with my parents has gotten old fast, even though I adore them. It's just time for me to start the next chapter in my life. The problem is, Cheerful is a small town, and the local school district doesn't have a single opening.

As of right now, I'm part-time at the library because it gives me something to do. Being a teacher isn't my goal—I mean, I'd totally take it because I'm still not a hundred percent sure what my goal is, but I’ve been mulling over being an au pair. All through high school, I babysat for families all over Cheerful, and I loved it. Now the local high school kids have taken over those spots, there’s no room for me anymore. Plus, the pay isn't enough that I could live off of it on my own. The only option is being a full-time nanny, and not many people are searching for those in Cheerful.

Lately I've been seeing where au pairs go abroad. It’s a contract for six months to a year, which sounds fun but also a little scary. When I was in college, the city could be overwhelming at times. I could handle it, but it felt exhausting. Not sure I could deal with a big city in a whole other country.

I know I can't keep dancing around making a choice. Being stagnant is getting old, and my parents really slipped back into the whole honeymoon phase. I don't blame them. They had five kids, and I was the last one to head off, leaving them with an empty nest.

My mom went a little stir-crazy at first, always showing up at my dorm with food and all kinds of crap, but she settled down after a little while. Now she and Dad are like teenagers who can't get enough of each other. It's easy to see how they ended up with five kids.

So when I declared I was going to shake things up and pull the trigger on a new step in life and my phone rang not even five minutes later, I took that as a sign.

I met Veena my first year in college. She'd been the resident advisor, RA, of my dorm. She was a few years older, and I was super sad when she graduated. We both were getting degrees in education, except Veena was getting her master's in it.

She works for a company called Tiny Treasures. They help place nannies and sitters of all kinds with families in need. It could be for small jobs like after-school pick-up or staying with the kids for a few hours while the parent runs errands. Or it could be with the same family a few times a week to become a full-time live-in nanny.
Molly runs the local bakery in Cheerful, which means she's constantly busy. Combine that with an inability to advocate for herself, and it's a lot of big emotions being bottled up. When the grumpiest man she's ever met literally smashes the cake she's trying to deliver to him, all she can do is paste a smile on her face and try not to cry. What she doesn't expect is for the grouchy jerk to hunt her down and vow to make it up to her.

Noah has been told by plenty of people that he scowls too much, or that he's flat-out rude. He doesn't mean to be, but he also doesn't soften his words to play nice. He's direct and to the point, and that can come across as him being a jerk. It's not until the town's baker drops a cake on his porch that he realizes he's made a huge mistake. One look at Molly and he's ready to do anything to get in her good graces.

Welcome to Cheerful, a town that loves Christmas almost as much as it loves Happily Ever Afters. This is the place to be if you need a hefty dose of holiday cheer, or you're looking to have your stocking stuffed. Grab your coziest pajamas and hot chocolate because it's about to get festive

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

MOLLY

It might be hard to believe, but I know it to be true. I don’t care what anyone says; when you make food for people, you put your energy and emotions into it. Yes, food can be made with love, but it can be made with a lot of other things too.

Today’s recipe calls for happiness and a bit of laughter. Which translates to Christmas music and dancing. I do a spin as I swipe the piping bag off the counter. I’m using the red frosting to put the final touches on the cake.

“Oh-oh, all the lights are shining so brightly everywhere (so brightly, baby), and the sound of children's laughter fills the air,” I sing as I move around the space.

It doesn't matter how many times I listen to Mariah Carey's Christmas songs, they never get old. Thank goodness, because living in the town of Cheerful, it's practically Christmas year-round.

I take my time on the border of the cake since it was a special order called in. I want to get this exactly right, perfect really. I've been pretty slammed, and there’s a baking competition coming up I’m a part of. That paired with Christmas fast approaching and the bakery is chaos. It’s a lot, but I’m catching up.

Not to brag or anything, but people travel to Cheerful for my frosting alone. I tell everyone the recipe because there’s no need for gatekeeping. I’m happy to share it with anyone that wants to go home and whip up a cake themselves.

I'll get calls that I must have given them the wrong steps or ingredients, and most don't believe me when I insist that it's simply happiness while baking that truly makes all the difference.

The locals believe it, though. We all know that the town of Cheerful has magic in the air with a good dose of love. In fact, it seems like everyone is finding love lately. I’ve never been lucky in that department. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Heartbreak sounds terrible, and I have no desire to experience it. I have enough of that in other areas of my life.

I stayed later today than usual because of a special request that came from none other than Marley Jacobs himself. He’s a fancy author who I’m told is a big deal. His books look too spooky and scary for me, so I take everyone's word for how good they are.

Marley moved here years back, and he’s been standoffish from the beginning. Mostly he stuck to his cabin, and we respected his need for space. I think we all knew that it was only a matter of time before the spirit of Cheerful would wrap around him. We were right, of course. There really is no escaping it if you move here. It just takes longer for some than others.

Now he’s calling in an order for a friend of his that’s in town. He told me that the guy named Noah really needs one of my cakes. Marley has never asked for anything, so I was quick to agree, even if it meant staying extra late.

I stand back when I'm done and admire my work. I hope this is exactly what Noah needs. He must be fancy too if he’s friends with Marley. I'm sure he has a fast-paced, busy life in the city.

I snap a few pictures of the cake to post on social media later before I grab one of the cake boxes and gently set it inside. I doodle on the outside of the box to give it an extra touch, then carefully carry it out to my SUV.

Once it’s safely in the passenger seat, I hurry back inside and lock up my bakery for the night. I always get excited when a new person gets to try one of my creations. It’s fun to see their reactions.

Pulling my coat tighter around me, I look up at the flakes of snow falling. It’s always snowing here. As excited as I am to deliver this cake, I’m equally as excited to get back home to my e-reader and start a little fire. I’ll cuddle in for the night with a cup of hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows.

I’ve lived alone since my aunt passed away a few years ago. She was the one that raised me for the most part. We moved to Cheerful when I was little, shortly after my parents' passing. It was a really hard time in my life, but I taught myself that if you smile, you really can fake it till you make it. It’s how I was able to push through my aunt's funeral and power on.

I’m not sure a therapist would agree, but I don’t go see one, so I don’t have to hear that. That’s kind of my thing. When anything might rock my emotional boat, I avoid it altogether. I mean, I’m a spoiler queen and what bookish people call an "end reader." I want to know what I’m getting myself into and if it will make me smile. These are things you can control. Why enter into anything that might break your heart? I find the world does a bang-up job of doing that on its own. I’m not stepping into any of it willingly.
Belle has the worst boss in the world. So when they ask her to drive hours away up a snowy mountain days before Christmas, she can’t refuse. It’s probably for the best because she’s just broken the expensive coffee machine in the breakroom, and she doesn’t want to be around when they find it. When the weather takes a turn for the worst, so does her car, and she winds up in a stranger’s bed. One look at the beastly owner of the cabin, and Belle is rethinking her need to hurry home.

Marley Jacobs is hidden away in the mountains for a reason. His scarred face scares people away, and his grouchy disposition doesn’t help. But when a beautiful woman literally crashes into his life, he’s claiming her for himself. With a possession he didn’t know was possible, he’s going to make sure she’s bound to him in every way imaginable.

Chapter One

BELLE

Is this day almost over? I check the time, and it’s dragging by. I’ve got two hours to go, which might as well be forever. At least the view is kind of nice. I get to watch the white fluffy flakes fall from the sky through the window. The window isn’t in my office because I don’t have an office. Technically I sit outside of an office, but I have my own desk, so that’s nice. That’s about the only nice thing around here.

I didn’t know the marketing world could be so intense, but I guess my karma was instant. This is what happens when you fudge your qualifications on your résumé. You get in over your head. Although I should be good at handling being in over my head at this point. It seems I always find a way to get myself in these situations.

The thing is, I thought I’d be in over my head with spreadsheets or whatever assistants to assistants do. I thought I’d set up schedules and write things on Post-it notes. I guess this goes back to being careful what you wish for.

To be honest, I’m shocked I've lasted this long. They must have not called my references. There’s only been one job that I haven’t been fired from, and that was the coffee shop. Right now, I’m really missing that place.

I thought this position was going to be a dream job. Well, the pay was a dream. It was more than I ever made even when working two jobs at a time while going to school. This job is salaried, and I thought it had normal work hours. Normal as in nine to five. I was hoping I could keep a second job at the coffee shop since I worked there all through college. Nope.

At this job, I’m always on the clock. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, if James calls, I’d better answer the phone. He’s not even the big boss. He’s the boss’s assistant, and I’m his assistant. I’m thankful for not being the big boss’s direct report, though, because she’s way scarier than him. One scorching look from her could linger on you all day. Okay, nights too. I’ve had a few nightmares.

I get that I’m kind of a mess, but everyone here makes me so freaking nervous. It feels like I’m playing a part more than I’m supposed to be here. I’m pretending to fit in and that I can be a professional assistant. If that were the case, I wouldn't be hiding at my desk after I just broke the fancy new espresso machine. Which would bust me on another lie.

When I said I worked at a coffee shop, I didn’t mean that I made coffee. I cannot be held responsible for other people's assumptions. At the coffee shop I mostly restocked and ran the register. They tried to teach me how to make coffee, but I couldn't get the hang of it. I did, however, make the best drawings on the cups, and everyone loved me. It was why I worked the register. I could remember all the regulars and their orders, just not how to make them. My old boss Shelly told me I brought personality and happiness to the coffee shop, and that made me feel like I was part of a team.

That’s the way I thought it would be here, but everything I do is a dud. I’ve tried to make treats for the office three times. The first time cinnamon rolls and then bagels. I made them fresh and had to wake up extra early. Nobody ate them.
Tilly runs the local hardware store in Cheerful, and she’s earned a bit of a reputation for not being afraid to say what she thinks. It’s a great way to keep people on their toes, and that includes the town’s new vet. He’s moved in across the street, and something about the way he smiles at her makes her stomach flip. When he keeps placing daily orders for his renovation projects, she starts to wonder if it’s an excuse to get her alone.

Paxton only has eyes for the sassy redhead across the street, but every time he tries to talk to her, he ends up putting his foot in his mouth. When a winter snowstorm hits faster than anyone anticipates, Tilly’s usual delivery to his house ends with her getting snowed in with him. All alone with nothing but his desperate need to keep them warm? Sounds like the perfect way to survive the night.

Welcome to Cheerful, a town that loves Christmas almost as much as it loves Happily Ever Afters. This is the place to be if you need a hefty dose of holiday cheer, or you’re looking to have your stocking stuffed. Grab your coziest pajamas and hot chocolate because it’s about to get festive.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

TILLY

“Come on, Tilly,” Molly says and shakes her head at me. “You’re from Cheerful. Smile.”

“I am!” I swipe one of my unruly curls out of my face with frustration. I don’t wear my hair down often because it gets in my way, but Molly said I had to for this.

“Try with teeth,” she encourages, and I do what she says. When Molly’s face scrunches, I know it’s bad. “I’m not photogenic. This was a terrible idea.”

“This was your idea.”

“Hey! You don’t have to call me out,” I say as I lick my lips. “What is this lipstick? It tastes like sugar cookies.” It’s making me hungry, but then again, I’m always hungry.

“It’s just lip gloss.”

“Dang, I might start wearing it then.” Molly put a little makeup on me when she pulled down my hair to take this picture.

“What did Frosty’s girlfriend give him when she was mad at him?”

Ope, here we go. I think it over for a second. “A blowtorch?”

“No,” Molly giggles. “The cold shoulder.”

I can’t contain my laugh, not because the joke is that funny but because this is Molly. She’s got Christmas dad jokes for days. It’s one of her many quirks. To love her is to love them. Plus, I’m legally bound to. It comes with being her best friend ever since we made that pinky promise in kindergarten to gang up on one of the boys who was picking on us.

“Got it!” Molly bounces on her heels excitedly. “I needed to get you into a real laugh.” She turns her phone around to show me the picture, and it’s not bad.

“Can we Photoshop my freckles out?”

“No! They’re adorable.”

“Isn’t the goal to be sexy?” I thought that’s what dating apps are for, but what do I know? I flip one of my curls out of my face.

“You’re sexy,” Molly says with so much enthusiasm that I want to believe her.

“You think? Is it the overalls?” I joke, pulling on the straps.

“Those are your work overalls,” she says, and I lift my eyebrow at her. “And sometimes when we go out for lunch or shopping. Or for when we go to the movies.”

They’re very functional for working in a hardware store, but they’re also really comfortable. When she finishes editing my dating profile, I notice she crops the picture so my overalls aren’t in it.

“Maybe I should go to the lake so you can take a picture of me catching a fish and posing with it?” I notice a lot of men doing that. I don’t get it, but if you can’t beat them, join them. Although I could probably beat them too because I always catch big fish.

“The lake is frozen solid.”

“I’ll bring a pickax.” I motion to one of the aisles in the hardware store Jingle Bells and Nails. “I can get through the ice.”

“I think you could get through anything,” she says, but I’m not sure I agree fully with that. A chainsaw can get you through most things.

Currently, I'm attempting to overcome my infatuation with the new hot-ass veterinarian in town. The one whose office is straight across from the hardware store.

Hot isn't even the right word for him. That man belongs on the cover of GQ. He successfully combines rugged masculinity with striking handsomeness. I can't even get started on his hair. It’s usually falling into his eyes when he's working with adorable animals. Then he runs his hand through it, causing all the girls in town to swoon. Like literally swoon. I thought that was only a turn of phrase until I saw it in live action.
Scout is terrified of love. Well, more specifically she's terrified to fall so hard she can't think straight. That's what it feels like when she's with Taylor, so of course she's going to run in the other direction. In an attempt to cure herself of all those emotions, she goes on a blind date with someone that's the opposite of Taylor in every way. But when the man himself shows up and saves her from the worst date ever, how is she supposed to be angry?

Taylor knows that two things in life are certain. One, that he's loved Scout since the moment he laid eyes on her. And second, that she loves pissing him off. As soon as Scout quits pretending she doesn't love him back, they can get on with their happily ever after. Until then, he's not going to make it easy on her.

Love and Lawyers break all the rules when three best friends find their forever. Come along with us as we throw order out of the courtroom and leave judgement at the door

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

SCOUT

Desperate times call for desperate measures, which is why I’m on my way to a first date with a man I found on a dating app. I’ve never tried one before, but again, I’m in desperate need of a second date. One that has the guy coming with me to my work's Halloween party.

My cousin is one of the partners at the law firm, but his wife is really the one throwing it. Halloween is her favorite holiday, and I get it. It’s fun to dress up, and you can be anyone you want. I have to go, not only because I run a big part of the law firm's daily ins and outs, but also because I love my cousin’s new wife, Abbie.

In fact, I'm the reason they met and are now together. I remind them of this only about once a week. That's really not much since I see them both almost every day.

I run my hands down the front of my dress, making sure there aren't any wrinkles. I'm coming straight from work, so I didn’t bother changing. Since I hold down the front desk at the firm, I'm always dressed up. But who am I kidding? If I could sleep in heels, I would. I’ve never shied away from my height; I'm tall, and the heels only make me that much taller.

I pull out my phone to double-check the details. I can be type A and rigid at times, and I know that about myself. I also know that I can’t change it. It’s who I am, and most men find me prickly. That’s why I never dated much. It was always one bad date after another. It never used to bother me. I was content, or maybe that’s what I’ve been telling myself.

Watching everyone around me fall in love is making me question it. That has to be the reason I’m so freaking attracted to Taylor. He’s the firm’s go-to man for anything and everything. If you want information, he’ll find it one way or another. I don’t think he cares if it's legal or not.

I respect that, and it’s wildly impressive. Hell, everything about him is, but Taylor isn't the man for me. He's too everything. Too tall, too handsome, too smart, and most of all too domineering. The man doesn't have to say a word and my body responds. His presence makes me have this weird need to please him. I have the strangest urge to sit on his lap as if it were my throne.

Yeah, no thanks.

It's those kinds of thoughts that are going to get me in trouble. Taylor is the kind of man that will break me. I need someone who is calm, maybe even passive. The type I can't fall madly in love with because that isn't in the cards for me. Once upon a time, I watched my mother fall head over heels for a man. Then it was one after another. It made her a mess, and if there’s one thing in life I hate, it’s messes.

I need a boring kind of love. So that’s why I am here tonight. I know this guy isn't the one, but he’s safe and could be useful. If I take a date with me to the Halloween party, then Taylor might back off.

I use my phone to check my hair and makeup. I should have done a touch-up before I left the office, but what was the point? I'll have dinner and make small talk, then invite him to the Halloween party. Easy enough.

“Good evening,” the hostess greets me when I enter the restaurant.

“Evening,” I say, returning her smile. “I’m meeting Frankie Witt.”

“Yes, he is already here. Follow me.” She grabs one of the menus before leading me through the restaurant. I spot Frankie before we get to the table, and when he sees me, he stands and pulls out my chair for me.

“You’re prettier than your pictures." He says it while slightly pursing his lips, making me not fully believe him. “But you’re a lot taller than I expected.”

This isn't said as though it's a good thing. It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell him he’s a lot shorter than I expected, but I keep myself in check. I force a smile because he doesn’t appear anything like his pictures, but I can’t be mad about it. I’m aware that I’m kind of using him for a date.

The hostess hands me the menu before telling us the server will be with us shortly.

“You know,” Frankie says as he flips open the menu, “I love a good restaurant in the lobby of a hotel.”

He smirks, and any guilt I felt over using him is washed away. Frankie is only in this to get between my legs. How interesting, since he doesn’t seem to care for my long legs.
Abbie is being harassed online but she doesn't know by whom. On top of that, her contracts with her business partner prevent her from defending herself or tracking down the stalker. Desperate for help, her friend puts her in touch with an attorney to see what her options are. Not only does attorney Spencer Chapman come to her rescue, but he might actually be the hero of her dreams.

Spencer has been into comic books since he was a kid, so when a comic book artist is in need of help, he's all too happy to lend a hand. From the moment, he meets Abby he knows she's his forever, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. If she needs a hero, he'll happily be that for her and much, much more.

Love and Lawyers break all the rules when three best friends find their forever. Come along with us as we throw order out of the courtroom and leave judgement at the door

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

ABBIE

Why is this so challenging for me? I pause on the busy sidewalk to try to give myself a pep talk, but it only lasts half a second before I’m nearly knocked over.

“Walk much?” a person mutters in annoyance as they hurry past.

“Sorry,” I say to no one in particular as I step to the side to get out of everyone’s way.

You’d think I didn’t grow up in the city, but I was born and raised here. I used to love it until recently—now not so much. Fear really can rule your whole life if you let it. That’s what today is about. Hopefully I’m going to regain part of my life.

The cops won't do anything, so I'll have to go about this a different way. That's where Scout comes in. I met her a few months back at a comic book convention. Comics weren't her thing, but she was there getting a couple of books as a birthday present for her cousin.

I always dress up when I go to conventions, and she complimented my outfit. When she asked to see more of me in cosplay, we shared Instagram handles. Scout and I messaged casually back and forth for a while, but then my life started to go to shit.

When she noticed that I wasn't posting anymore or replying to people, she became worried and reached out more frequently. Thankfully, we switched over to texting before I shut down my social media altogether. It had to be done for my mental health and possibly my physical health too.

“Hey!” someone shouts, and I lift my head. The hood of my sweatshirt falls back, and I see Scout standing there holding open a glass door. “Come on now.” She motions with her hand like I’m a wild animal she’s afraid to scare off. “It’s safer in here.”

Her sincere smile gets me moving, and I walk inside. “Thanks.”

“I said I’d come get you.” Scout reaches out, giving my shoulder a small squeeze. Her keen eyes assess me, but I wave her off.

“I’m good.” I run my hands down the front of my sweatpants to dry them off. They feel clammy, and I have the urge to turn around and run back home. I’ve become a hermit living behind locked doors all the time.

“You’re not fine.” Scout looks me up and down dramatically.

“Ouch, do I look that terrible?”

“No!” Scout immediately shakes her head. “I meant you’re usually dressed up in some way. At least from the times I’ve been around you and then all of your social stuff.”

“I know.” I puff out a breath.

Scout’s right; this isn’t me. I’ve never been one to wear baggy sweats and not care about my clothes. Fashion feels like art to me, and I choose what to wear based on my mood. I've made some of my own stuff as well since it comes with the cosplay territory.

I guess what I’ve got on matches my mood. I'm hiding myself in every which way, and still the walls are pushing in on me.

"Come on. Let's see how we can help." Scout links her arm into mine and leads the way.

She always looks great too, but more high-end fashion. She’s so put together that if I passed her on the street, I'd think she was a fancy lawyer. She reminds me of those get-ready-with-me videos where everything is perfect when they do their morning and nighttime routines. I bet she’s on one of those schedules that keeps her productive.

"Miss Mann is always allowed up, Clark,” Scout tells one of the two men behind a marble desk. “I'll email you her details." Behind them is a screen listing all the floors in the building with the names next to each floor.

I know jackcrap about law offices and buildings, but this one is really nice. They have to be good to afford it here. I should have googled the firm, but I've been in a funk and staying away from the Internet altogether.
Emerson could not be a more reluctant bride. She’s being forced into an arranged marriage for the sake of her parent’s reputation, and she doesn’t have a choice. When she goes to the attorney’s office to sign the prenup, she doesn’t expect the attorney to warn her. She also doesn’t expect him to make her feel like she’s the most beautiful woman in the world.

Gideon Bennett takes one look at the engaged woman in his office and knows she can’t sign the prenup. Not only because it strips her of power and money, but because she belongs to him. She just doesn’t know it yet. He’ll do everything in his power to make her his, and that includes going outside attorney/client privilege.

Love and Lawyers break all the rules when three best friends find their forever. Come along with us as we throw order out of the courtroom and leave judgement at the door

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

EMERSON

It’s a petty thing to do, but I only have small ways to rebel. If my mother wants to drive me insane, I’ll do it right back, and we can both be miserable together. Still, I cringe when I hear my name screeched across the garden.

“What?” I call back as I finish pruning the rose bush.

“You come when I call you.” I mouth the words at the same time she says them. If my mother is anything, it’s predictable.

“Coming,” I shout as I stand and brush the dirt off my knees.

“Are you freaking serious right now, Emerson? You know we are about to leave, and that’s a two-thousand-dollar vintage Chanel dress.”

How could I possibly forget the meeting with a lawyer about my prenup? So romantic. I’m wondering why I don’t get my own lawyer instead of using Conner, but I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s not like I have anything to my name. Everything belongs to my parents.

“Really?” I scrunch my nose as I look down at my dress. I mean, it’s not hideous. It’s minty green, but it does have a cute collar. It’s something my mother referred to as a tea dress, but I think it looks like something a doll would wear. “It doesn’t even have pockets.”

“Go wash your hands.” She sighs and rolls her eyes. “The driver is here.”

The driver has a name, and it’s Charlie, but I doubt she cares. My mother is worried about more important things than the people that work for her.

“Fine,” I concede.

What choice do I really have when my parents control my life? Though I’m not sure my mother would agree with my feelings on the matter, because if she did, then I wouldn't be playing in the dirt.

“I swear, I’m going to have this whole garden removed.”

My stomach sinks at her words, but I’m careful not to respond. Partly because she’s already walking away, and I’m losing the garden either way. Seeing it ripped out after all the years of work I put into it would break my heart. This place is my sanctuary and the small bit of freedom I’ve been allowed. Out here the space is open, and I can breathe. The walls aren’t closing in on me like they do when I’m with them.

When I get inside, Mason gives me an apologetic look. When I move out, I’m going to miss him the most. I mimic the over-dramatic eye-roll my mother always does to him, making him smirk. It’s our thing to do imitations of her behind her back. It’s one thing he does that always makes me smile.

While washing my hands in the kitchen sink, I contemplate for the millionth time whether I could escape. I’m not sure where I’d go since I might be the poorest rich person in the world. Is that a thing?

I’m surrounded by wealth that some people dream of, and although my basic needs are met, if I walked out the door, I’d have nothing and nowhere to go. I don’t even have a freaking ID or know where my Social Security card or birth certificate are. Hell would freeze before my mother would hand any of it over to me.

We live outside the city, so I’d have to walk forever to make it anywhere. With all the true crime podcasts I listen to, kidnapping seems like a possibility. I assume that’s what happens to every girl walking alone on an empty road. Still, if I made it to the city, then what? I guess I could sleep on a bench.

“I told you we were leaving,” my mother snaps.

“Sorry.” I dry my hands, and when I turn around, she snatches the towel from me.

“There is dirt on your face.” She rubs it against my cheek roughly, and I try to pull back.

“Ouch.”

“Stop being dramatic.” Her eyes move over me from head to toe. "Where is the ring?"

Oh, crap. That’s a good question. Where is the ring? I don’t know because I'm always taking it off. I hate the dang thing. It's gaudy and snags on everything. It's also a reminder that I am days away from marrying Conner.

He’s also a reminder that if I walk out the door, I'd be royally screwed. I'm utter shit at reading people, and he provides all the proof I need. At one time I didn't think he was a total cheating jerk, but boy was I wrong.

"In my room?"

"Are you asking me or telling me?" My mother can’t seem to hide her irritation.

"I'll be right back." I step around her and hurry and go get it, but the rug catches my heel, and I almost faceplant. Luckily I catch myself on the counter before I do, and I hear my mother’s disapproval behind me.

"Those classes clearly aren't worth the money." She huffs and stomps past me. "Meet me in the car. We won't keep people waiting just because you're behaving like a silly little girl."
