I don’t believe anything could feel better than this.

“Yes! Yes, Matthias!” I cry out.

Matthias’ fangs gleam white against his dark skin. The room spins. My eyes roll back in my head.

Somehow, I remember to ask for permission. “Sir, I need to come! May I please come?”

“Come!” he roars. He stands on his knees and lifts my legs, so my ankles hang over his shoulders. He grips the tops of my thighs, lifting my ass off the bed. His loins slap against my ass in a jackhammer motion as he fucks me fast and hard.

Oh. My. Gawd. It’s so good. So good. So–

I scream as the orgasm rolls over me. My internal muscles pulse and release.

Matthias doesn’t stop; he continues to plow into me as he lowers my ass to the bed and leans forward, so I’m in a plow position, practically folded in half. Only then does he slow, breathing in a deep rhythmic pattern like he’s trying to calm himself. Trying to get control.

I don’t want him in control. I want him to come with me.

I deliberately squeeze my muscles around his cock.

He lets out a surprised shout.

I do it again, and his panting breath comes faster.

“Maisy!” He sounds alarmed. Suddenly he’s pounding into me again, his face contorting with pleasure. He shoves in deep and groans, and I swear I feel the heat of his cum spilling inside me as his hips jerk and buck.

His teeth graze my shoulder. I gasp, my loose muscles jerking to attention when he nearly breaks the skin.

Matthias rears his head back, alarm scrawled across his face. He pulls out and backs up off the bed.

My hand flies to the place his canines scraped. He didn’t break the skin; he just bit a little harder than I expected. It’s fine. I might have a tiny bruise there. No big deal.

But Matthias seems horrified. He tries to say something, but it only sounds like growls. He holds one finger up and rushes out the door.

What…the hell?

I don’t need medical attention, if that’s what he’s thinking.

“I’m okay, Matthias!” I call after him to put his mind at ease. “Totally fine! Come back!”

When he doesn’t answer, I roll out of bed and get up to follow. Foolish man. He’s ruining the moment by treating me like I’m breakable.

I’m going to tell him that.

I find him in the kitchen, with his doctor’s kit dumped on the counter. He’s jabbed a syringe with a dark fluid into his arm. A tight band of rubber constricts the blood vessels on his arm to make them stand out.

“Matthias?” I stare in shock.

I’m instantly sick. Memories of watching my parents shoot up in my early childhood flood my brain. I feel dizzy.

His expression wears dismay.

He’s an addict?

Like my parents? What is this? Oh God, did he somehow know about my trust fund? Does he need the money for drugs? Or a gambling addiction? I think back to the past few days. The diamond jewelry. The “friend’s” mansion. The box seats and Cirque. What kind of small town doctor has friends like that?

I watch as his elongated teeth recede. The electric blue fades from his warm brown eyes.

“Maisy, I’m sorry, I’m under control now.”

“Wh-what are you doing?” My voice must hold a mountain of disgust because I watch understanding dawn in his expression. His forehead wrinkles, his eyes appear regretful. “Oh sweetheart. This looks bad to you, doesn’t it?”

I can’t speak. Can’t move. I’m rooted to the spot.

“It’s just medicine to control my bear. It’s to keep me from claiming you.”

Ice sluices through my veins. I don’t know what he means, but I don’t like it.

I don’t like any of this.

“What?”

“You’re my mate, Maisy. I have to take Moon Cure to keep from claiming you.”

Chapter Twenty

Matthias

Fuck.

I couldn’t have fucked this any more.

I almost lost control and marked Maisy back there. And now she’s seen me injecting myself with Moon Cure.

It must’ve triggered her childhood trauma because my lovely mate looks like she wants to run as fast and far as she can away from me.

She stumbles back, and I dive forward to steady her.

“Don’t,” she snaps, shaking my hands off her forearms. Her face is pale. “Let go. I don’t know what’s going on, but I don’t like it.”

“I can understand that, Maisy. I totally can. I’m sure with your parents–”

“What did you mean by keep from claiming me?”

I want to scoop Maisy up in my arms and carry her back to the bedroom, but I can tell she’s not interested in my comfort right now. She wants an explanation.

I yank the band off my arm and deposit the needles in the sharps container. “Come–let’s sit down. I can explain the biology of mates.”

Maisy stalks back into the bedroom, but instead of sitting down, she pulls on clothes, like she’s feeling vulnerable and needs to cover up.
