She cut his words off with a kiss. She had to kiss him, for he was making her feel so warm, so loved. Not because she was living up to some lofty standard of propriety or behavior she thought he wanted, but because she was herself. As soon as her lips touched his, his hands were upon her, pulling her closer.
Perhaps he truly loved her as much as he claimed. As much as she loved him.
He took her face between his hands and she didn’t resist his dominance. She welcomed it, opening for his onslaught of deepening kisses. His masculine scent, his force, his tenderness, his possessiveness stilled her racing thoughts and brought her back to a sense of calm. I love you, she thought. Perhaps everything is all right between us after all.
And oh, how I’ve missed this.
He drew back and pressed his forehead to hers. “I’ve missed this,” he said, a perfect echo of her thoughts.
She grasped his shoulders. “More then. More.”
He indulged her, brushing his lips over hers until she felt the thrill in her ears and her stomach, and her toes. She stretched against him, against his safe, familiar contours, and basked in the pleasure of his tongue teasing hers.
“May I stay here with you?” she asked when the kiss, and the next kiss, and the kiss after that ended. “I would like to stay with you.”
“Of course you may.”
She twined her fingers into his. “My eyes hurt from crying. I cried a great deal.”
“Close them for a while, then.”
Kissing her husband had awakened dormant feelings within her heart, and certainly feelings lower down in her body, feelings that made it hard to settle down. She only meant to sleep next to him where she could feel protected and safe, but then she began caressing his muscular arm where he held her. She moved her legs against his, unable to hide her restlessness.
“I’m sad but I want you to make love to me,” she said. “Is that strange?”
“Not so strange. We’ve said a lot of things to each other just now, things that wanted to be said, but there’s another, more direct way of speaking together.”
“With our bodies.”
“It’s only natural,” he said, with a secret smile. “How well you conduct yourself in all things natural, dear Janie.”
He was already hard and ready. She could tell as soon as she pressed her hips against his front.
“I love when you call me Janie,” she said. “I have always loved that.”
“Show me how much.”
She was ready for this challenge. After so many days of avoiding her husband, she found she ached for his possession. She teased him with tantalizing kisses and caresses, and wrapped her legs about him, rubbing against his hard member with sinuous pelvic moves. He shuddered as she stimulated him, the thin cloth of her nightgown the only thing separating her from his virile heat.
After a few delicious minutes of this teasing, he gritted his teeth and pulled her beneath him, gazing down with animal intensity. “There are a thousand things I want to do to you, things I’ve dreamed of doing while you’ve been absent from my bed, but I don’t have the patience for leisurely play right now. I want to take you hard and fast.”
“On my knees?”
“No, just like this.”
He drove inside her the next moment, and she lifted her hips to meet his powerful thrust. They paused a moment, their gazes locked as he remained deep within her. It had been a long, difficult night but now that they were together, their connection felt like healing.
“Yes, more… Please, Edward.”
He gathered her close and pressed inside again, so she felt every inch of his possession. He said he would take her hard and fast, but he interspersed his wildness with exquisitely gentle kisses.
“I love you,” he said as his lips whispered across hers. “I love you, Janie. I do.”
Jane squeezed his shoulders and closed her eyes, drifting on the scent and skill of his attentions.
“I love you too,” she whispered when she could catch her breath. “And oh, that feels so good.”
She’d been drawn to his bed for comfort, but for this too. She didn’t feel alone anymore. She felt treasured, she felt supported, even when her emotions were not completely steady. She didn’t doubt anymore that he loved her.
She released his shoulders as she neared her apex and buried her hands in his hair, giving some of his violent passion back as she twisted her fingers into fists. “Yes, yes, yes,” she said. “Please, I’m so close.”
So close to happiness. So close to love. So close to you.
She would always look back on this night with some sadness because of what had happened to her sweet pet, but there would also be this to remember, this forgiveness and reconnection. She locked her knees about him as she achieved her release, reveling in the sensation of fulfillment. As the waves of ecstasy ebbed, she came back to herself in time to realize she was still pulling his hair.
