“I’ve got this,” I said as I pulled the dining room chair into the room. “Okay, sit here and think about Shawn.”

Kristin’s eyes were glossy, and her cheeks were slightly red. “Got it!” she said with a salute.

She sat down in the chair, and I lit the white sage and lavender smudge stick, then moved it around the room.

“That smells good!”

“Shh! Think about Shawn!”

“Right! Shawn. Thinking about him now.”

I moved around the room and said, “Picture you and Shawn together.”

“Sexually?”

Rolling my eyes, I replied, “However you want!”

She smiled, and I curled my lip as she licked her lips. “Anyway, think about the two of you together. Now, take this red candle.”

Kristin opened her eyes and reached for the red candle. I handed her a knife. “Carve his name in the candle.”

“Okey dokey!”

Two seconds later, Kristin yelped. “I cut myself.”

“Damn it, Kristin!”

She giggled. “Well, we should have done this when I was sober!”

“If I thought you would have, we would have!”

Her brows pulled down. “What?”

I took her hand and helped her carve his name.

“Oh, wait, maybe we were supposed to carve your name?”

Kristin started laughing.

“Let’s put your name on the other side! Couldn’t hurt to have both names.”

“No, not at all. What could possibly go wrong?!” she said between a hiccup and a laugh.

“Now we need to inscribe, ‘bring love.’”

“Or hot sex. Let’s put hot sex instead.”

Ignoring her, I held her hand and attempted to carve in “bring love.”

“I still think we should put hot sex.”

I couldn’t help it. I giggled. “Okay! I’ll carve it in!”

Another round of giggles hit Kristin as she reached for her wine and the smudge stick that she started waving all over.

“Put that down and place the candle in the middle of this plate.”

It took Kristin a few times to get the candle in the little holder on the plate, but she finally got it.

“Okay. Now you need to take the cloves, nutmeg, and sugar and mix them in this bowl with intent.”

“Contempt? Why?”

“No, not contempt, intent. Like you intend on having hot passionate sex with Shawn because he’s going to want that!”

“Yes!” Kristin said as she mixed the spices. She wore a deep, concentrated expression, and I nodded.

“Good! Good! Now you have to sprinkle the mixture in a circle around the candle, and you have to say seven times, ‘In your mind, you will see only me. If love is to be, your will shall be free.’”

She scrunched up her face. “That’s a lot to say. Can you write it down so I can read it?”

I handed her the piece of paper. “Can you sprinkle and read at the same time?”

“Hold on…wench. Let me read it a few times. I’m not that drunk. I can remember it.”

As I waited for Kristin to learn the spell, I tapped my fingers on my knees.

“Okay. Got it!”

“Great. I’ll hold the bowl for you and the paper if you need to read it.”

She nodded as she reached into the bowl and took some of the spices.

“In your mind, you will see me. If love is to be, your will shall be free.”

I nodded and motioned for her to say it again. She said it five more times, then changed it up on the last one.

“In your mind, you will see me naked and you inside me. If your love is to be, you will set yourself free in me!”

“Gross, Kristin!” I gagged, then shook the paper. “Say it the right way.”

Somehow between her laughing, me giggling, and spices going everywhere, she managed to say the spell.

“Now what?” Kristin asked as she sat back in the chair.

“You’re supposed to see yourself with him as the candle burns down.”

She nodded. “Want to play dirty-word Scrabble while we wait?”

“Ohh! That sounds like fun!”

Lucas

Alex stared at me as he waited for me to show my cards. I laid them out, and Alex cursed.

“Royal flush, baby!” I said as I pulled the pile of chips over to me.

“What the fuck? That’s the last five hands you won. I’m done. I have no more money left,” Alex stated as he attempted not to pout.

I looked at James and Shawn. “Are you also going to pull out simply because I’ve had a round of good luck?”

“I think you’re cheating,” Shawn accused. “You suck at poker, Lucas. How is it you suddenly became a blank page? I haven’t been able to read your face at all. And when you do frown like you have a bad hand, it’s a good hand. It’s confusing.”

Laughing, I said, “I’m sorry, isn’t that what poker is all about? Come on, one more hand.”

James shook his head. “Nope. I need to walk out of here with my head held high. Losing to you has thrown me.”

“Is it hot in here to you guys?” Shawn asked.

Alex gave him a befuddled look. “Hot? No. It feels good.”
